Testimonial to Capt. Dm. Aitov, or thr
Perit —A very pleasant affair occurred yes
terday on board the steamship Peril, of the i
Pioneer Line, being the presentation of a tes
timonial to the popular Captain by his j
passengers upon a lair trip. The tes
timonial was in the form of an elegant
aurt massive silver cup with gold lining,
•;ml was preaented to him by one of his late
passengers, with an accompanying letter
signed by the donors. The letter expresses
a high estimate of Cap.t. Dtlanoy's character
•iud efficiency as an officer, and kindness and
courtesy 03 » gentleman, and wishes him
continuous health and prosperity. Captain
Defhnoy responded in a few well chosen
words of acknowledgement, modestly assur
ing bis frieDds that be had done only what
he considered his duty by them. \\ itb char
acteristic hospitality Capt. Delanoy then in
sisted on making an -‘occasion” of it, and
the whole party afterwards sat down to an
elegant lunch in the saloon of the steamer.
The presentation cup is of elegant pattern
and of costly make and finish. It bears upon
one side the Inscription; “Edwin A. Dela
noy, from the Passengers ot steamer Peri*,

White Laborers Wanted.
Heretofore It has been the policy to discourage
w hite labor in the South ; oar laborers were princi
pally colored slaves. From that Tact no white per
son labored who could, by any honorable means,
avoid It. in fact, it was generally considered dis.
graceful to tabor; our sous and daughters were
brought up in Idleness ; there really were no reason
why those whose parents had plenty of negroes
should work. That time has passed, and the s oner
we rCallze it the better It will be for us all, Svary
tub now stands upon Its own bottom, and many,
very many of us, besides the negro, will have to bot
tom our own tub. Therefore, those who have a bot
tom to their tub, (that is, those who have land.l h.;d
better turn la aud work for a living, for In idleness
we will soon find ourselves without a bottom, for It
will take but u short time to eal up the value of u good
patch of laud at two to live dollars per acre, provided
we remain In Idleness and continue our habits of ex
travagance. There is one thing certain ; that Is, that
those who labor Industriously and live economically,
will in a few years own the real estate of this country ;
be they white or black.
Industry,Perseverance and Economy, noty have a
field of endgmrlgcmeit before them. The time has

‘California Wives for this ......
seen by an advert lament in another column the
celubrated California Wines which.have recently at
rained so high a pbb-e among the wines es aU rnnm
tries, and which have enjoyed a steadily increasing
popularity duirng the few years in which they have
been in the marker, have been introduced into the
Savannah market. Tim agent for this city and State, is
Mr. A. Kohler, a brother of the original manufacturer
of the wines In California. The California Wines have
ever liad the distinction of being free from adulteration
to a degree unequalled by any other wines. But the
directness with which they reach Mr, Kohler fiom the
producer is a further assurance of their gemiincs*
We heartily recommend these wines, their tine slaver,
and richness, their parity,, and general superior qua
lities.
We take pleasure In calling attention to the ad
vertisement of Messrs. O'Kallon A Cos., which ap
pears hi our columns to-day, and assure our friends
in the interior that any business entrusted to them,
could not be placed In better hands The monied
resonices of the hou3c are large, and the gentlemen
comprising the firm are merchants of the highest
business Integrity aud qualifications, well known
throughout the United States.

Savannah Oct. e, 1865.
Remarks
The past week has been, perhaps, without special
features with a fair business doing in all descriptions
of goods.
The advance noticed in last week’s report, in gro
ceries, dry goods, etc., was maintained Several ar
ticles In the grocery and provision lmo continue ad
vanclng, and the market for them is greatly unset
tled.
During the week we noticed many merchants about
towu, from the Interior, Southern Georgia, East and
Middle Florida, whose purchase of goods were very
large. Although the rivers everywhere arc low, pur
chases are made; the goods stored and Insured,
and the merchants await a rise In the rivers for
transportation.
The Dry Goods Market Is firm, and a very good
interior trade was done the past week. We quote
bleached goods at 35 to 58 cents per yard : Prints,
31 to 33*Jc. per yard : Primed Delaines, 45c. per yard;
Cotton Flannels, 5i ceuts per yard ; French Merinos,
$1 10 per yard ; Domestic Gingham, 4uc. per yard ;
calicos are retailing irom 45 to soe. per yard.
The gold market uas been very active, and the
