Sacred Poetry.
A wonderful activity exists in the depart
ment of literature caiied hyiuuoh:*sy. X t
that so many new hyras and sacred song
tire now wriiten, but the Uynui i.iiquati,--
tire aDroad gieaniug every sera t u . . ,110 is
verse in old song-booss and hym ,u... .-,u .
Iturnisuiog it up for our buying, fen years
tttio it was difficult to find any < In . tion , f
hymns beyond those Used in the churcne*;
now you can buy a dozen choice vo.umns of
tcligious poetry in,auy boo.;-,tore. The
teems of Christian poetry which are packed
away in the dusty tomes of Crhfhaw, and
Wither, and Herrick, and Daniel, aud
\ aughan, and Herbert, have been collected
and edited, or sprinkled into more recent col
lections, in every vaiiety of form and mutila
tion. ‘‘The Christian year,” in 1827, was
the key-note to this movement. Says Dr.
-■ewman : ‘‘When the general tone of re
ligions literature was so nerveless and im
potent as it was at that time, Keble struck
an original note and woke up in the. hearts
of thousands anew music, the music ol a
: chool long unknown in England." •
Since that day, the church hymn-books
have gradually been enriched with more lib
eral additions, though they are poor enough
yet with all their improvements, aud ibe sim
ply of hymnals has every year increased iu
merit and variety. And on*' of the chief re
sults of these contrihmions of old elcineuts
to modern religious poetry has been, that
many persons have woven ilteir meditations
and experiences into Chrisiiao h\ tuns, aod,
instead ot following the old system of long
and-hort meter, have bent both meter anil
words so completely to the thought that they
torm together one normouious whole. It has
become the fashion ot the tiny to write reli
gtous lyrics,— not to be sung, not for the
public ear, but to be read iu subdued tones
tu the stillness of one's cnauibet, or with con
genial companions
The Bubjectiveness of modern peotry has
t ome even to this, and when these experi
ences are not morbid, but situ .ly toe natural
outpourings of the heart in spiritual cotnuiu
mon, the result, in the It mds of a true poet,
is excellent; and as it is given to women to
penetrate into the mysteries ol n ligi >n with
a gentler aud more reverent tread ttiau m, u,
perhaps the best religious poetry ha, been
written by them, or, li uot by women aloue,
by those men who have come nearest to the
receptive faith of womau. Iu proof of this,
we have but to mention the names of Airs,
btowe. Miss Elliott, Miss Kimball. MiesPruc
, tor and Aliss Waring, though Faber, and
Keble. and Tennyson, aud Coxe, and Palmer
have the same leminine gracu aud beautiful
tenderness. Aud any one who will take the
-'-trouble to trace the authorship through anv
one of the dozen lyres which now claim onr
attention will tmd further proof of the same
tact. •
Personal Sketches.—Augusta J. Evans
-The author of ‘‘Beulah” and “Alacaria"
deserves more than a passing notice at the
hands of every friend of Southern literature
aud Southern genius. We are not given to
hyperbole, but to do justice to Aliss Evans,
we are compelled to use language which will
appeal- hyperbolical to those woo have uot
watched her career or have not “studied" I
her productions as “works of art.” In native
genius, then, we believe her to be a star of
the first magnitude. Still in tne heyday of
young womanhood, her genius is so ex
uberant as, in most of its manifestations—
particularly in some of the finest passages of
Alacaria”—to present to the cold, uuitupas
sioned critic, the appearance of “high art”
—reckless of the “unities”—a Koh-i-noor
"in the rough.” But this defect, this blemish
upon a gem of purest ray serene, must
: peedily pass away : iu fact, you can al
ready see that it <s passing away. “Practice
. makes perfect, ’ and practice only : and with
each succeeding work of Aliss ‘Evans, it is
plain to the most iudifferent observer that
she is surely rising on the wing ot a mighty
inspiration to her decreed place among “the
few immortal names that were uot born to
•Ho.”
The lady admirers of .the author ot “Beu
lah will be interested to hear toai slu- uocs
not belong to the “homely guild,” as is so
usual witn women of genius. Personally at
tractive, that attiacliveuess is indescribably
heightened by a wondrous charm of manner,
and by unpretentious conversational powers
such as, we venture to affirm, have rarely
(•eon equaled by the celebrities of either sex
Splendidly as she writes, eloquent as she is
with her pen, she surpassed herself when she
speaks; and you cannot help thinking, when
listening to her improvisation flow of spark
ling thought on all imaginable subjects, here
is an American Corinne, quite equal to the
glorious conception of Madame de Btuel;
here is a young woman of extraoidiuary
wealth of intellect, whose labors in the field
of letters are bound to exercise a potent in
fluence in improving the taste and elevating
the character ol Southern literature Mm
