The Savannah Daily Herald. TUESDAY. OCTOBER 10. IN A3. interesting Statement, concerning th. Fenian*. Thos«ew York World, which appears to !>e well posted concerning the Fenians in Xew York, gives the following interesting particulars: There are at present about fire hundred circles in the country and they are increas ing at the rate of one hundred per in. .nth.— Tnese circles number from oue t<> three hun dred men. There are also three hundred fe male circles in the coumry, presided over by Miss Ellen Mahoney, who is the female head ceuter. She is the principal of the Normal School at Chicago. The monthly expenses ol the body amount to sixty thousand dol lars, and it is said a tax of tweuiy dollars a man on the Fenians in the United States, is nearly paid up, and the aggregate assess ment will reach $500,000. There are in New York city a military engineering class of oue hundred taught by'an engineer iormerly ou McClellan's staff Suoseriptious to a large amount come every week horn all parts of the country. A bank account is kept bv the brotherhood. One of the Bank Note Com panies is printing eight percent bonds in the name of the Irish Republic. They will be ready next w,-ek in denominations of $lO. S2O, SSO, SIOO, SSOO and SI,OOO. In the cen ter will be a figure of liberty drawingr. sword, and at the sides vignettes of Emmett and Lincoln. It is confidently hoped these will be taken up rapidly and large offers come from the country aud the west It was staled that John Morrissey had offered to take SIOO,OOO of the bonds. At th« Fe nian headquarters in Duaue street, they are continually boxing up muskets, but, ot course, no information is given as to where they are sent. With regard to the ORIGIN or THE FENIANS * the following curious bit of information ap peared the other day in the New York Even ing Post: To the Editors of the Evening Foil: I am very much surprised that none of the intelligent readers of your able paner have ref rred to Ossian's mention of the Fenians. It is to be found iu Hector Mclntyre's translation of the lamous interview between that misty poet-Fiugal and the tutelar Saint Patrick ot Ireland: Patrick, the psalm-singer, Since you will not listen to one of my stories. Though you never heard It before, I am sorry to tell yon You are a little better than an ass." "Good, good 1” exclaimed the antiquary ; "I dare say the poet was very right. What says the saint ?” “He replies in character," said Mclntyre ; “but you should hear Mc- Alpin sing' the original. The speeches of Ossian come in upon a strong, deep bass ; those of St. Patrick are upou a teuor key.” “Well 1” pray go on," said Old-buck. St. Patrick replies to Ossian : ■Upon my word, son of Flngal, While 1 am warbling Hie psalins, The clamor of your old women tales Disturbs my devotional exercise*.’ “Excellent 1” said the Antiquary ; “wliat 1 admire is the courtesy o. these two eminent persons towards each other.’ “Then, said .Vlclutyre, this is the answer oi Ossian : “Dare you compare your psalm:,, You son of a— “Son of what ? ’ exclaimed the Antiquary. “It means, I thiuk," said the young sol dier, “the son of a lernale dog.’’ • Do you compare your psalms To the tales ol the barc-aruied Feulans •‘Are you sure that you are translating that last epithet coirec'tly ?” “Quite sure," answered Hector, doggedly. Because I should have thought the nudity might have been quoted as existing in a different part ot the body." Disdaining to reply to this insinuation, Hector proceeded in his translation : "I Bhall think It no great harm, To wring your bald head from your shoulders.” By consulting works in the Astor Library it will be found that a tribe iu lielaud, said to be descended trora the Phcenians, gave Fingal the word Fenian. A- r. rise Speakership of the Nest Home of Representative*. [From the Boston Traveller.) A contest for the speakership of the next U. 8- House of RepreSeutadves has begun. Mr. Colfax, who was speaker of the last House ot R presentatives, uaiurally looks to be re-elected ; but Mr. Ashley, ot Ohio, as pires to the post, aud so does Mr. G. 0. Smith, of Kentucky. Mr. Raymond, ol New York, who has presided iu the New Y'ork Senate, is anxious to have the presi dency of a higher body, and is so very per sistent an office-seeker that many think he will be the winniug nag. But if General Banks should be elected to represent our Sixth Congressional District, as many think* he should be, we would back him against all others, tor the speakership, if fitness for the post should he required iu seiectiug a man to fill it General Banks does many things well, hut as a presiding office' he is the besi man now living, and we douot if there ever has lived bis superior for me Speakers Chair. He could go inio the Cuair of the British House of Commons aud bu as much at home ad been in Parliament all his ii» -wouft tin*, ol debate anatu^^wlHhaMVnjl^mtmet, whether popular or select,as ii camtuosnakd*' speare to write great dramas. He was born for sucu work, and, following the bent of his genius, he has mastered everything bears upon me matter, that is to be acquired trom books, through observation, or by ex perience. Two years be presided over the Massachusetts House of Representatives, a much larger body than the U. 8. House of Representatives ; and he was President of the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention, which couiaiued more than 400 members. He was speaker of the U. 8. House of Rep resentatives two years. The custom of changing Speakers would seem to be favor ably regarded, though it agrees not with the English practice, ana differs essentially from the early American practice. We had but few Speakers for the first half century of Congress, but of late years they have been almost tvs numerous as Houses of Rep resentatives themselves. Siuce the year iß3d the Speaker’s Chair has been filled by Mr. Hunter, Mr White, Mr. J* Mr Davis, Mr. Winthnp, Mr. Cobb Mr. Boyd, Mr. Banks, Mr. Orr, Mr. Grow Mr. Peomugion, aud Mr. Colfax,—twelve (Speakers in twenty-six years, of whom but one was re-elected, namely, Mr Linn Boyd There were but thirteen Speakers iu the fifty years that followed the first meeting of Con gress, in 1?8», and three of tue changes made were due to the retirement of Speakers before toeir lei in 3 w ere out Mr Clay was speaker ten years, Mr. Sttvenson seven years, Mr. Macon six years, Mr. Muh lenburg lour years, Mr. Varuum tour years and Mr, Polk four years. But now eicil bouse must have its Speaker. KYeie Gen. Banks to be sent to the next Congress, aud were be to be chosen Speaker, it would be the same thing as the re-election of an old and a tried officer. We see it stated that the National Intelli gences, of Washington city, is to be the ‘'or gan" ot the present administration. If Andy Johnson needs an exponent in this way, he cannot do better than select the journal named.
