Steamer Fountalu. every Saturday morning, at 9 o'clock. The Late Hiouway Rolbxky—a Severe Sen -EVCE.-1U our issue of yesterday we stated that a nranger had been robbed on the public streets, In ;* broad daylight and under circumstances of pecu liar aggravation. Upon a careful examination yes ar dsv bv Lieut. Col. M. T. Uolbruok, Provost Marshal of it was ascertained that the live men arrested and Richard Haynes, who was robbed, came out to savannah as steerage passengers on the steam slilo Leo The parties arrested having in casual conversation discovered that Haynes was an route tor Atlanta. Ga., a,gnihed tbai they were bound to that place. Tuev all came ashore, when they drank together, alter which Haynes was robbed. The ev.- den e a ain-c his coinpamous being most conclusive col Holbrook sentenced each to pay a flue oi live hundred dollars, or In default to be imprisoned in the PenPeutisry of Georgia for six months each. The parties convicted gave thetr names and residences as follows: John Gallagher. City Hall Place, New York City; John Maloney, Washington Square, New York City; James Morrison, Yorkvllle, New York City; Henry Moran, Hudson street, New Tort: City; John Murphy, Neware, New Jersey. Thedefendauts falling to pay the flue were ordered to be confined in the jail oi Cuatham county, until a guard can accom pany them to the penlrentiary at Muledgevffle. The Streets or New York.—The Theatre was crowded to Us full capacity last evening, as it was on the drat presentation, on Monday night, of the sen sational drama, "The Streets of New York. A ru mor of the exciting and attractive character of the play, and the extensiveness and magnificence of Its scenic effects had reached us from the Northern aties long since, and the promise of the managers of our Theatre to produce It here, put everybody into a pleasant fever of expectation. ‘ The Streets of New York” has at length made Its appearance, and has added anew triumph to the successes of the enterprise and liberality of Messrs. Raymond 4 Hamilton. The piece was well put on the stage, the several thrilling scenes of the play producing their Intended effects, and the Tableaux of the Park, Union square, the Fire, etc., being truly very creditable, beautiful and striking. The cast of the piece was very felicitous, placing the favorite act ors of the company In their best lights. The rollick lng devil-may-care, "Tom Badger” of Mr. Hamilton, that comical genius, “ Han, the Fire Boy,” by Mr. Ray mond, •' Bloodgood” by Mr. Wise, “Alida” by Miss Gordon, and “Lucy”by Miss Cameron, were entirely successful. The piece cannot fail to draw crowded houses whenever produced in the excellent style of the two last evenings We notice with satisfaction the very orderly de. portment of the audiences which nightly attend the theatre. Such conduct Is mutually respectful to themselves and highly complimentary to the per formers. There Is ohe annoying custom, however, In vogue, which we would be glad to see reformed. We aliude to the practice of rising from the seats before the frill of the curtain. This “indecent haste’- to leave the house is embarrassing to the actors, and exceedingly annoying to those who prefer waiting for the “tag,” which is generally made a point in every good dramatic composition. In the Northern cities where many In the audlaace arc anxious to se cure a seat in the stages by which they are conveyed to their distant homes, there is some excuse but no justification for such indecorous behavior. Here in Savannah, where no such excuse exists, we can only account for the eager haste with which Some persons rush to the doors just as the closing tableau of the piece Is being formed, on the supposition that their conduct Is prompted by a desire to Imitate me trqpolitan rudeness. We are pleased to observe that “Our American Cousin" iu which the company appeared to so good advantage ISat week Is to be repeated this evening. No one should fail to see this world-renowned drama, and the excellent rendering of It bv Mr. and his talented company. Reopening of the Public Schools. The Public Schools are reopened this morning as follows: The Boys’ Grammer School, corner of Barnard and Taylor streets ; the Girls’ Grammar School, In the second story of Massle School ; the Primary School for boys and gills in the first story of the Massle Scvool. Mr- J. F. Canu retains the posi tion of superintendent. At a meeting of the Board of Education, held at the Mayor’s Office on Saturday last, the following named persons were unanimously elected as teachers la the Public Schools, aud have since been approved by the Commanding General: Mr. John B Mallard, Mr. Edward C. Hough, Miss M. A. Mccarier, Sahie Cox, Virginia Miller, Ella Gilliam, Ella (Juantock, Mary Davenport, Eveline Way, Fannie Dorsett, Anna E. Harden. ' ‘Herald” Men among the rosebuds and Orange Blossoms Under the proper head appears an an nouncement of the marriage of Mr. J. Holbrook Estill, a well known newspaper man, to Miss Marion V. Thompson, of this city. As foreman of our press room, almost since the establishment of the Savan nah Herald, among all our faithful employees none have been more faithful or more zealously devoted to the success of the enterprlze than Mr. Estill—al ways at Ills post and always efficient. Mercer, counsel for Mr. John Neason, having been called to the card of Capt. conradr. published In the Herald of the loth, he begs j us to say that the statement of Capt. Con rady Is a true version of the fact3 which transpired at the trial, and thaj our reporter was Incorrect In stating that the evidence disclosed any attempt on the part of the soldiers, Morgan and Pettit, to rob Mr. Neason. On lhe contrary, one of Mr. Season’s witnesses, with lilm at the time of the atfray, dis tinctly averred that no attempt at robbery was made by either of the soldiers. This statement Is due to Morgan and Pettit, whose good character as men, was ; not in any manner Impeached by the proceedings , .before the military commission. From Augusta.—The steamer Laura, Capt.
