Ti e remains of Mr. McMahon were yesterday bu ried in Cathedral Cemetery. Departure o Brevet Brig. Gen. Davis.—Brevet Brigadier General Edwin P. Davis sailed for New York yesterday on the steamer Leo, being about to be mustered out of the service. Gen. Davis came to this city about the middle of June last, since which time lie has held command, first of the Post of Sa vannah, afterwards of the Sub-District of the Ogee ciiee, which Includes the city 01 Savannah, and a pan of the time of the whole District of Savannah. Gen. Davis entered the service at the beginning of the war, as First Lieutenant In the 62d New York Volunteers, a New York city regiment. After being promoted to a captaincy in that regiment, he was transferred to the 162d New York Vols. as Major- In October 1882, he rose to be Colonel of the regi ment. passing over the intermediate grade of Lieu tenant Colonel. In February, 1864, he took his reg iment to New Orleans, where it formed a part of the lit Division, 19th A- C-, and with It followed the fortune* of the Red Elver expedition under Geneal Banks. Returning to Washington, in July of that ■ ear, he joined in the defence of the Capital against iUe raid which at that time menaced it, being placed m command of a brigade, and of two the principal lc;. from here lie followed the retreating raiding coluin down the Shenandoah Valley, under command of Gen. Sheridan, passing through the battles of* Winchester, Fisher's Hill aud Cedar Creek. Iu the last of his engagements he wa9 severely wounded while leading a charge of his brigade, colors la baud. For these conspicuous gallantry on this and other occasions Colonel Davis was recommended to the President for promotion, aud m due time was made Brevet Brigadier General, and assigned to a command commensurate with his rank—the 2d Brigade, Ist Div. 19th Army Corps.— Gen. Davis’ command lias been gradually dwindling since the reduction of the army commenced, un ill with the mustering out of his own former regi ment, the organization has ceased to exist. Gen. Davis’ reputatiou iu the army, lor gallantry, energy, dash and military efficiency is an enviable one, wlille his administration of < ivil affairs here, though marked with no very striking events, has been eminently able and acceptable to the people, and has gained him a name and standing whicU will loilow him into private life. Icjerestixo Examination.—Lieut. Col. M. T. Hol la ooK, Provost Marshal, in addition to his other du ties. has under examination the case of the United States vs. Thomas McDermott, charged with receiv ing stolen cotton. Mr Philip Young is prosecutor’ and Mr. George A. Mercer counsel for the United States; the counsel tbr the defendant are, the Hon Julian Hartridge and M. Benedict, Esq.. If a case be made oat by the prosecution, the defendant wllj be turned over to a military commission for trial. In Bivouac.—Company H, 68th Begiment, New Tork Veteran Volunteers, eu route for Fort Pulaski, fc. ■ ouaeked yesterday morning on the green plat east of the Exchange, The command is in ex cellent health. The collector at Augusta reports hiving col lected two hundred thousand dollars within the last three months, and the collectors at Macon report one huudred and fifty thousand dollars in the same period, all of which are from taxe6 on cotton. “Owing to the irregular transportation fas cilit.es between Georgia and Washington, these receipts have not yet been forwarded io tbe bureau here, but are safely taken care of—ia_one case beiDg deposited in a State bank, nnd in the other, placed under a mili tarv guard. The collector of internal rev enue for the district of Montgomery, Ala bama, reports that there will be one hundred thousand bales of cotton sent to the market from that district alone, in a short time.” They had a clam-bake the other day down at “Tuunton, Good Lord.” An idea may be formed of its mammoth size by tbe following enumeration of the amount of the articles cooked: 100 bushels clams, 26 bushels pota toes, )>oth kinds, 1,500 ears sweet corn, 600 lbe*. dressing, 600 lbs. fish.
