The Care of tUe Four .Vew York Thieves.
It wili be remembered that about a fortnight ago, a
oolii highway robbery was committed on our streets
ova party of New York roughs, just lauded Irom the
3teamor, upon the person of au Indiscreet young
man irom tue interior, who had been a f.llow-p*.-
-snger with them from New York. The thieres
abused the confidence reposed in them by getting
their victim drunk, and relieving him of his green
i.acks by tuc process of gafrotlng,—one or two of
ihem holding-him l>y the throat and arms, while the
others rifled his pockets. They were promptly ar
rested by a Lieutenant of the Police and on the llth
,11st. were arraigned for trial before Lieut. Col. M.
i. Hoibrook, Provost Marshal, and the proof being
positive, they were each fined in the sum of five hun
dred dollars, or in delimit to be Imprisoned for the
term of six months in the Penitentiary at Mllledge
vlile. ...
From this sentence an-appeal was taken to On.
SteeJmau by defendants' couusel. After a careful
examination of the case at Headquarters, the defend
ants were ordered to be turned over to the civil auth
ority. A warrant was issued by Justice Philip M.
Hassell on Thursday last, and a special Justice’s
Court was convened at the Court House. A thorough
investigation of the testimony, occupying two days,
was made, and it was ordered that the defendants
be heldover to the next January Term of the Superior
Court of Chatham county, to answer for the offence
of larceny from the person ; and It was further
ordered that the defendants be each required to enter
good recognizance in the sum of three thousand dol
lars. They failed to give the required recognizance
for their appearance, and were remanded' to jail,
col. A. W. stone'and M. Benedict E3qs., were the
counsel for the defendants.
