OH! FILL. ME A CUP.
BT KLKA ADDITIVE.
Oh fill me a cup (Tom Lethe's stream.
» Ita every drop I’ll drain :
For It will calm my wild despair,
And ease my bosom’s pain.
’Twill blot from memory a name
That echos ever there—
A name I dare not thin! on now.
Or weave Into a prayer.
Then, oh 1 forgetfulness be mine—
Be mine thro’ life’s dark dream ;
Let me not think upon my grief,
But give me pleasure's beam.
Oh, sorrow : cease thy waves to roll
Around m> heart of woe;
Let peace her empire now resume.
Though hope fled long ago.
For I must ever careless smile,
And act a gladsome part,
Though sorrow mocks my mask of Joy.
And canker eats my heart.
Then fill me a cop from Lethe's stream.
Its every drop I’ll drain,
For it will calm my wild despair,
And ease my bosom's pain.
JOHN MITCHELL, K St*.
This gentleman, who was recently dis
charged from imprisonment at Fortress Mon
roe by the President, is not among the least
of the sufferers by the war. Ooe of his sons,
the youngest, we believe, was slain at Get
tysburg, beariug gallantry the bauner of bis
regiment, the Ist Virginia. Another was
killed during the defence of Fort Sumter,
which garrison, be commandel at the hour
of his death; while the third was severely
wounded in the right hand. To add to his
griefs, bis wife and daughter bad the misfor
tune to be wrecked while endeavoring to en
ter the blockaded port of Wilmington, losing
everything they possessed, and narrowly es
caping with their lives.

Monroe, of which the following account is
given by the correspondent of tho New York

“1 have come to bid you good-bye,” said
Mr. Mitchell to Jeff. Davis, extending his
hand to the latter, who grasped it warmly,
and firmly held it in his during the brief in

“The pleasing news of your restoration to
liberty lias already been told me,” replied
Mr. Davis, “and I congratulate you, now
that you are a free citizen of the world
again."
“I hope I shall soon have the pleasure of
similarly congratulating you,” responded Mr.
Mitchell,”
“I bide my time cheerfully and hopefully,"
spoke up Mr. Davis.”
“Have you any commands tor me?” asked
Mr. Mitchell; “any service that I can do for
you.”
“I only ask to continue you ou my. list of
friends who are doing all they can for me.”
“Be assured of my unfailing co-operation
in yonr behalf.’*
“I ask nothing more.”
“Shall I Write your wife anythiug?” Mr.
Mitchell further asked.
“It might be a pleasure to her, although
you know I am allowed pretty extended treo

her.”
“Good-bye,”
The two unclasped bands and parted.
Mr. Mitchell was minute to my informant,
undertaking to give the exact conversation,
which in turn I have givcu as minutely as
received from the lips of the latter.
A Gioanic Rail Road Phojkct. —A rumor
is current in 8. Louis, which if verified is
Draught with important consequences and
benefits to the commercial interest* of the
South West. It is stated that a rail road
corporation, of which Hon. D. S. Dickinson,
of New York, is to be President, is in pro
cess of formation, with the intention of
buying out the South branch of the Pacific
Rah Road, and extending it to the Northern
border of Texas, where it will be met by ilie
Texas Central Road, a part of wbicb is now
under construction in a -Northerly direction
from Galveston. The whole line, when laid,
will be some hundred miles long, and will
place St. Louis and Galveston in direct con

A Our Inverary correspondent

for hia w ork along the shore of Loch lyne,
about five miles from luverary, saw, or

seal. When he approached it splashed into
the water, and as he saw its head bobbing
up and down, and its long grey hair floating
ou the wave, he altered his opinion, aud
became convinced that it was an ancient
mermaid. Unromantic wretch that he was,
he began to throw stones, to avoid which the
creature moved further from the shore, but

its purpose, and made straight agaiu for the
rock, 011 which it landed. The man, no
