Dkath op an Eccentric, who proves to
UK THE Father op the Weater op J. Wilkes
Booth.— By the latest English mails we learn
that Bartholomew Corbett, aged BfY, lather of
Sergeant Corbett, who shot Wilkes Booth
had been conveyed to the Marylebone (Lon
tlon) W orkhouse Infirmary so very ill and
Jiis head so dreadfully swollen from erysipe
las, that it was thought that he could not
possibly survive many hours. For many
years past, says a London paper, the old man
has lived in a small back room in Cbapel
street, Edgware road, and for the last seven
years no one but hitflself had entered the
place. He was understood to be a taxider
mist, and was considered to be very clever
at his business Nothing having been seen
pr heard of him for some days the police
were called in and the door broken open,
when the room was found to be full of rub
bish, and Corbett was seen crouched in a cor
ner, in a state of delirium. He was removed
at once to the workhouse. The room, from
the floor to the ceiling, was found to be
crammed with cases of stuffed birds, books
and papers. The latter were carefully cov
ered and labeled, and many of them appear
to be of value. An avenue, three feet high
by two feet wide, and formed of stuffed
birds, &c ; , led to a recess, not much larger
than the interior of an ordinary sized port
manteau, and this eccentric individual must
have slept in the recess for many years.
A Rich Jokr.— lt is perhaps not generally
understood that postmasters when receiving
letters not prepaid are required by law to
send to the parties to whom the letters are
addressed a printed note with tbe blanks
properly filled out, informing them that they
can rbtain tbe letters by paying tbe postage
due. It so happened not long since that
Postmaster Trott of this city had occasion to
send a Bote of this description to a colored
soldier in one of tbe intererior districts. On
the face of the envelope was stamped in
bold letters the word “Free.” which meant
of course there was nothing to collect for
nostage. Judge, of tbe hearty laugh the
Postmaster eojoyed on receiving the follow
ing reply to his note :
“Mr. Stanly G. Trott—lf I was you I
would not trouble yourself about telling me.
lam free. I sent you six cents. Please for
ward the letters.

The Choura in New York Harbor.—
There were no reports of additional cholera
cases among the steamship Atalanta’s passen
gers. The cabin passengers have sent
auotber communication protesting against
their being still prevented coming to the
city, and Dr. Murphy, in an interview with
Mayor Gnntber, insisted that their further
detention at Quarantine is unnecessary. Dr.
Sayre, Resident Physician of the city, has,
at tbe request of the Board of Health, issued
a statement of facts in regard to the nature
of cholera and the proper means to be used
to prevent its spread.
