C rime In M«*l*»lU*.
NiSiiviLLK, Nut 21, 18t».».—( rime is so
fearfully on the increase in Nashville that
Mayor Brown issues his proclamation to
morrow, requiring ffay and night police to
inquire into the employment of all white or
colored persons, without ostensible business,
who are not known to be residents of re
spectable standing; and to arrest and arraign
all suspicious persons before the Bee rder.
for investigation; so that bonds or sureties
may be taken, and to carry out this object
an additional force is to be detailed in con
junction with the regular police.
Nashville, Nov. 20, 1865.—Nashville is
infested by bands of robbers and murderers.
Last night, about ten o'clock, Mr. William
Hofferman, a well-known citizen, was re
turning to St. Cecilia Seminary with his
daughter and son, in his carriage, when he
was attacked by four highwaymen, who
dragged him into the bushes by the road, at and
robbed and injured him so severely that his
recovery is impossible-
One of the robbers was badly wounded by
Mr. Hotferman. All the robbers have been
captured and confined in jail. An excited
crowd of citizens are preparing to lynch
them. They were found to be teamsters in
the employ of the government.

California.—California is the culmination
of all that is best and pleasantest in frontier
life. Tire people curiously combine shrewd
ness and enthusiasm. They go fast, have the
best, anti despise the expense. At a ball the
oilier evening 1 policed a lady iu a quadrille,
whose elegant dross was profusely trimmed
with hundred-dollar lace. An end of the lace
became detached ; her foot caught it and
loosened a yard or two from the skirt. A
moment would have suffered to pin it up ;
but without missing a step, she tore off the
long strand aud threw it away. Her husband
who was standing by, seemed heartily
amused. The whole was thoroughly charae
terislic of Californians. Parsimony is the
Charybdis which they shun with so much
terror that a good many go to pieces upon
the Scylla of Extravagance. Wo to him who
is niggardly, and to the new comer from the
East who puts on airs!
Belgium Threatened—A sort of alarm
exists iu Belgium. King Leopold, who will
complete the third-quarter of a century of
life ou the 16th of December, canuot be ex
pected to live much longer, aud it is feared
that, on his death, Napoleon 111. will inter
fere in Belgian affairs, aud anuex that coun
try to his empire. Belgium was a portiou
of ths dotniniou of Napoleon 1., of whom
Napoleon HI. is heir, and he thinks he has
a right to his inheritance, and he has—if he
can get it. Some persons ridicule this fear,
and say that England, and Russia, and the
Germanic Powers would all oppose any at
tempt that Napoleon 111. might make to re
annex Belgium.
Invkstilation into Anothbr Ai.lbgeo
Fkacil— lnvestigations are being made con
cerning another class ol fraudulent enlist
ment papers that threaten to implicate one
or more New York mustering officers, The
dodge resorted to was this: A person wish
ing a substitute would contract with a mus
tering officer to furnish one. The first, vol
unteer that presented himself to that officer
would be entered as a substitute on the mus
tering papers and never discover the mistake
until lie applied for bounty, or State aid, or
something of the sort. He was then away
from home, friendless, moneyless and igno
rant of the forms and methods of redress.--
If he died detection was impossible and quite
improbable, owing to the difficulty Os estab
lishing the necessary facts. It is believed
large sums have been thus realized by dis
hpnest officials.
When Gen. Bragg was in Augusta, Ga.,
Jeff Davis telegraphed to him “to bold the
State at all hazards, stop up the roads, de
stroy the supplies and crush Sherman.’’ At
the close of the dispatch, the strauge phe
nomenon ot an idea seemed to strikt him,
and be asked: “What is your available
torce for this purpose."
..ra” w **' lch Gen. Bragg promptly replied:
rive proclamations and one brigade.’’
