House of Senator Douglas. — Until yes terday I could not, says the Washington cor respondent of the New York News, prevail upon myself to enter the former residence of the late Senator Douglas. For a month or two past, however, it has been in the hands of persons whose labors have restored it to its former condition, as it appeared in 1860, when it was the home of the illustrious an# lamented Douglas, and the resort of eminent men and beautiful women, not only front every State in the Union, but irom many for eign capitals. What celebreties have been gathered within its walls! What scenes of brilliant festivity have taken place in those splendid apartments? Here, too, Senator Douglas and his Democratic colleagues la bored to devise measures which might avert the bloody fraticidal war which the Aboli tionists were determined to bring about.— Tbe house is now offered for sale, or it may be rented. Fortunate is the man who se cures it. There are few houses like it in Washington. A bouse in tbe same row has been bought by General Grant. Shbnandoah Rumors. —lt is stated per tel egraph that a demand will be made upon England, by the Federal authorities, to de liver up the officers and crew of the She nandoah under the extradition treaty. It is represented that the action of the American consul at' Liverpool, in accepting the Shenandoah, is condemned, and that he acted without authority. — A cargo of slaves from Africa, estima ted all the way from 100 to 800, were land ed on the shores of Cuba recently. The Post Office Department desires to fhrnish the State of Georgia with Postal service, at Ihe earliest practicable day, until July Ist, 1866, when the regular contracts’ proposals lor which are now advertised for, will go into effect. The Department invites proposals for con veying the mails until June 30, 1866, to all country seats aud other important points not reached by Railroad communication, at rates not to exceed $8 per mile per annum for weekly seivice ; sls for semi-weekly, and $22 for tri-weekly; and where the importance of the case requires, S4O for daily servile ; counting the distauce one way only in all cases.. Service will be turaished on routes, where, before the war, it was daily, three times a weefc: where it was tri weekly twice a week; and where it was semi-weekly, weekly service will be allowed.
