—The oral peiformaucu in tlii* country of
Meyerbeer's last work, tbe opera of L'Atri
raioe, which has becu awaited tbe musi
cal world with an almost feverish excitement,
was given at tbe New York Academy of
Music on Friday, tbe Ist insl. Tbe critics
were so overwhelmed by the splendor and
entile newness of tbe opera as to be unable
to say much about it tbe next morning. One
Bays: , ‘ '
“ So far we can say tbat tbe music seemed
to surprise everybody, not because of its
dramatic character, but because of its abun
dance of melody—melody of a familiar and
graceful kind, and yet full of passion and
earnestness. Many cf the subjects could
be carried away by tbe ear, did not tbe leDgth
of the opera forbid their repetition according
to tbe scene. These elisions may be neces
saiy, but they materially retard tbe populai
ity of tbe work, for tbe reason tbat what the
composer iuleudcd to impress upon tbe
memory is beard too lugitively to effect the
desired end. Tbe fourth act is simply won
derful for its beauty; tbe melodies are over
flowing witli intense passion, aud tbe action
of ihe music is grand in its variety, rapidity
and force, it requires a chapter to describe
its exquisite beauty. Tbe liftb act is a tilting
close to this remarkable opera.”
Cotton. —Tbe steamship Western Metropo
lis arrived from Apalachicola, Florida, in
New York, on Friday last, bringing threo
thousand bales of cotton, the largest cargo
ever takeu froin tbat port in a steam vessel.
There have so lar been shipped from Apala
chicola about thirty-six thousand bales of
cotton, aDd there were ten thousand bales
on baud there on tbe 15th. There are some
forty thousand bales still up tbe Apalachi
cola River, which will come down while the
depth of water permits, making in all over
eighty thousand bales tbat will be shipped
thence this season.
Tbe slock of cotton on hand and on ship
board at New Orleans November 15, amounl
• ed to 124,825 bales.
The steamer Gambria sailed from New
Orleans lor Liverpool, November 24, with
1,200 bales of cotton on board.
A number of plantations have recently
been purchased in the vicinity of Augusta,
Ga., by parties from tbe North.
A Mississippi newspaper states that of tbe
80,000 bales ot cotton collected by the Gov
ernmentAgents,but 6,000 have been account
ed for, and says tbe stealing mania is ram
pant.
In accordance with a law just passed by
the Mississippi Legislature, tbe State Tax
Collector at Vicksburg has given notice that
a tax of two dollars will be collected on each
bale shipped trom tbere.
Jf
Abrest or a Theatrical Agbnt for
Frightening People by an Advertisement.
—Albert C. Cassidy, tbe agent of Lucille
Western, who is now performing in Phila
delphia, a lew days smee caused to be posted
on the street corners a placard in reference
to a “Child Stealer" from Europe, described
as about 24 yeats of age, a dangerous person,
and a perfect adept at her frightful trade.
The placard caused great excitement among
certain classes of people who were unsophis
ticated enough to believe that it was a genu
ine caution. It turned out to be nothing
more or less than a “flyer" to create public
interest in a uew sensational play called
“Atonement or the Child Stealer,” which
was produced at the Chesnut street Theatre
Thursday evening. The indictment upon
which Mr. Cassidy was arrested and held for
trial, charged him with “wantonly and ma
liciously” “uttering and publishing” the said
placard, with intent to alarm and annoy
good citizens of the city of Philadelphia and
of the Commonwealth. The indictment sets
forth the misdemeanor at leDgth, with all
possible legal verbiage.

Indiana, 782 from Michigan, 510 from Ohio,
and 200 from Connecticut. The number of
those that died by the effect of wounds is
