The Savannah Daily Herald
A Valoablk Rbuc Distkoikd.—The
Richmond Enquirer says:
“When the Federal army was advancing
up the Peninsula, Dr. John Mayo, .ot this
city secured an old bell at Yorktown and de
livered it for safe keeping to the officer in
charge of the State armory, comer of Seventh
and Cary streets. The bell had engraved on
it the words, ‘York county in Virginia, 1725.'
.This precious old relic, which had been
cast in England, and whose peals had been
heard at \ orktown long before the surrender
Uornwallifi, was left in the armory on the
night of the evacuation, and was seen there
several weeks afterwards by the officer above
mentioned. In an interview which that offi
cer had with Col. Kress, ordinance officer
United States army, in this city, for the pur
pose of claiming some private property, the
State officer drew the attention of the United
States officer to this relic, and also to a cop
per vane which had bung for many years
overthe dome of the old armory on the basin
bank, and the latter requested the for
mer to say to the United States officer then
In charge of the armory that he desired
these relics to be sent to his (Colonel
Kress’s) office. The writer of this be
lieves they never were sent to that office.
The attention of the present State authorities
was also drawn to tbeße relics by the State
officer referred to. It now turns out that the
old bell is in the possession of a metal moul -
der in Philadelphia; for Vincent Bargamin,
ol this city, informs us that be recently saw
it there broken into fragments. Os course it
was sold to Mr. Hook for old metal. This
13 a barbarous disposition of such a valuable
relic. As for the vane, the capper was cut
out of the frame, and it, of course met a like
fate.”
University op Georgia. —The public will
be gratified to learn that this old venerated
Institution of learning will re-open 'January
Bd, ensuing. Among the signs of returning
prosperity to the Stale, we are sure that the
intelligent and patriotic citizens of Georgia
will hail the resumption of the University
exercises with that pride and pleasure which
always characterize the sentiments of a re
fined cultivated people. The history of this
University is largely the history of our an
cestral renown—the record of the finest in
tellects that have adorned the progress of
Georgia in all that constitutes the trust and
highest distinction of a Bate. Nor can
anything be more flattering to our future
prospects tbau tbe great interests every
where evinced in tbe prompt and efficient
opening of the University. To meet tbe
earnest wishes of tk# public, tbe Trustees
have been exceedingly active, for some time
past, in perfecting such arrangements as will
enable the University to commence in Jan
uary next with enlarged facilities for fulfill
ing the task confided by the Btate to their
hands. .
We are quite certain that anew era in tbe
life of the University will begin with its ap
proaching session. The energetic spirit in
the Board of Trustees ; the warm and zeal
ous co-operation of its numerous Alumni ;
the indications of the newspaper press and
its earnest advocacy of claims of the Univer
sity upon public confidence ; and, above all,
the profound conviction so general among
the citizens of Georgia that we now need,
more than ever, the advantaged of a fully de
veloped-University ; all these are unmis
takable signs that this institution is destined
to enter immediately upon a qareer of en
larged usefulness. Assured, as we are, of
this fact, we congratulate tbe Btate on the
cheering prospects of her University; and
with all our heart, (and uttering from the
heart the fervent wish of nearly one thou
sand Alumni,) we bid her God speed in in
spiring tbe young intellect of Georgia with
the aims and aspirations of a noble, Christian
Scholarship. —Athens Banner.
The Reason Wht. —Many wonder why the
law breakers in East Tennessee are so bold
in their persecution of returned Confed
erates. The matter has been made perfectly
plain to us. In conversation with a gentle
man a tew days since, he informed us that
the present inenmbent of the gubernatorial
chair of Tennessee made use of the annexed
language. In talking recently to a crowd of
East Tennessee admirers, be in substance,
tcld them to go on with wbat he termed
“their good work"—that is their outrages
upon men who had favored tbe South during
the war. “And,” he continued, “it any of
you are found guilty and sentenced to State
Prison by the courts, I will meet you at the
prison door with a pardon; if any es you are
sentenced to be hung, I will meet you at the
gallows with a reprieve.”
As long as such men bold office in Ten
nessee, we may look lor murders and out
rages of all kinds, in that portion of the
Union. — Aitgutia Chronicle y Sentinel.
Horse Thieving —There appears to be a
great deal of horse and mule stealing going
on in the country now-a-day. Planters
cannot be too careful of tbeir stock. All
should be on the look out for rascals who are
committing these lawless deeds, and should
do every thing to find them out and have
them taken care of.
