President of the Company.
It will be gratifying to the public at large
to know that the new Beard comprises busi

which is a sufficient guarantee of a wise and
pradent management oi the affairs of the
Company and of an energetic prosecution of

te Mr. Wadley, the new President, was
% many years as General Superintendent of
the road, intimately associated with its late
President, R. R Cuyler, Esq., and partici
pated with him in the labors of conducting
the Company to the condition of unexampled
prosperity in which it stood at the opening
of the war. He is emphatically a practical
railroad man, combining with skill and ex
perience great persoual energy, which
qualifications pecullaily At him for the
duties ot bis new position. We feel that we
are not promising too much when we say
that the public may be assured that under
■ihe auspices of the new Board the work ot
reconstruction and repair of the track of the
road will be pressed forward with ail possi
ble speed to completion, and that the aflairs
of the Company will be managed in such a
aniuner as to give public satisfaction and
ensure its highest prosperity.
We learn that Mr. Geo. \V. Adams has re
signed his position as Geueral Superintend
ent of the Company, to take effect at such
time as his withdrawal will not be prejudi
cial to the interests of the Company. On
accepting his resignation the Board passed a
omplimentary resolution, tendering to Mr.
Adams their thanks for ‘'bis long and faith
ful service as General Superintendent of the
Company.” In this resolution the Board
jjave the hearty concurrence of the majority
of our citizens, by whom Mr. Adams is re
spected and esteemed as a worthy gentle
man and laithful and efficient officer. His
connection with the Railroads of Georgia
commenced in 1838 He was for a period of
eight vears General Superintendent of the
Southwestern Railroad, which position he
resigned at the earnest solicitation of the late
President, R. R- Cuyler, to take that ot Gen

appreciation of his services, a Costly set of

Relic* oft lie Bombardment of gavannnn-
A countryman standing on the sidewalk
on Bay street near the Custom House, a few
days since, was attracted by the operations
of a gang of negroes on the other side of the
street, who were engaged with shovels clean
ing oat the gutter. Every now and then a
negro would stoop down and pick up a can
non ball and throw it on one side, and then
resume ids digging for a minute or sp, when
be would pick up another ball and throw it
down in like manner. All the negroes were
similarly engaged.
“ Well, well, exclaimed the country
man, “I never had no idee that the Yankees
piled so inauy cannon balls and bumbahtlU
into old Savaaoab before. Why, they moat
made 'em whilzz about the old burg like a
swarm ol bumble bees when -they can dig
’em out of the ground as fast as that. No
wonder the swellheads gin in at last. ”
Hia curiosity having been raised to the
highest pitch he walked across the street to
get a nearer view of the interesting process
of exhuming the Yankee bombshells.
As he approached the gang of negroes he
saw what he had not observed before, that a
chain was attached to each shot, and on a
little closer examination he discovered that
the other end ot the chain was attached to
Ihe leg of the negro.
His aatonishmeul waa now greater than
ever. He looked on for a minute in silent
amazement- At length, as one of the ne
groes near him picked up his ball and threw
it on the giound again the length of the
chain to the right ot him, he ventured to ask:
“I say, buck, what upon yeath is you all
doin' with them cannon balls?”
“Jiat takiu care of ’em,” replied one of
the negroes.
“Well, what have you got ’em chained to
yaur legs that away for ?”
“So the cussed rebs can’t steal ’em, ”
plied the intelligent freedinaD. ‘ Heaps t f

Well well,” said the unsophisticated indi
vidual from the rural districts, “I’ve hearn
Savannah waa a monstrous thieving place,
hut I didn't spose cannon balls had to be
chained to people’s legs to keep ’em from
being stole.”
To prevent the repetition of such imposi

sona the auihorities have had the chaps wLo
sport the ball and chain in our streets label
led with conspicuous placards.

A desperate affray occurred at Barnesviile,
in this State, December 26. in which a Mr.
Taylor, ol Chambers county, Alabama, was
killed, and also another geutleman named
Pounds. The attack was made upon Tay
lor, with intent to kill, as is supposed. Tay
lor, in defence, killed one ot his assailants
named Pounds, but was immediately shot tn
several places by another Pounds, brother of
the gentleman whom Taylor killed. Mr.
Taylor died shortly after he was'shot.
A imii named Ennis was killed in Atlanta
Monday night; and another named Harris

TUG CONFEDERATE OG1D.
The following suggestions from the Nash
ville Union and American, one of the ablest
and best ot our exchanges, will commend
themselves to every humane and beuevolent
heart: ‘We frequently meet with poems and
other tributes to the ‘Confederate Dead.’
Whilst the dead who sacrificed their lives for
the principles which were presented to them
in the late war are entitled to our admira
tion and gratitude, and to a perpetual place
in the memory of the Southern people, there
is yet a living duty resting upon us. The
widows and orphans now suffering for the
necessaries of life and thousands ot maimed ;
survivors call for our respect ami sympathies
Iu all of the L -gislatures of tbe Southern
States we have witnessed with gratification
movements looking to the amelioration of
these classes. Our failure places our crip
ples beyond the pale of assistance by the
Federal Government. No pensions, no boun
ties, no land grants inure to them. The de-
crepid Confedejate soldier must rely upon
the kindness of friends. The empty sleeve
and the absent leg must be supplied by the
kindly offices of the more fortunate. Hap
pily, in this work of chanty there need enter
no political question.
“The war is over, and whilst the govern
ment can take care of the unfortunates who
were maimed in its defence, those of tht?
other side fall upon the list which addresses
itself to the feelings ol’ abstract humanity
and private charity. There are cases in
which the benevolent feelings of human na
ture are enlisted without regard to the causes
of the misfortune. Th°re is scarcely a city,
town, village or hamlet iu the Sooth iu which
there are not representatives ot the miseries
aud misfortunes of war. It is due to the
l(etter impulses of human nature that these
sufferers be relieved. Let us not forget these
duties and obligations. The cold and
cheerless winds oi December remind u-t for
cibly of these claims, aud enforce them upon
our consideration and attention. Let not the
higher and kindlier qualities of our nature
fail to assert themselves while there are so
many objects of our tender regard.”
Id this connection we note with pleasure
the esiablLhment of a Southern Soldiers’ Re
lief Association in Memphis, with some of
the most estimable men of Tennessee as a
board of trustees, who have assumed control
of the enterprise.
The Appeal, in alluding to this institution
makes some touching allusioos to the gallant
