PLANTATIONS NEAR SAVANNAH
FOR SALE OR RENT.
A TRACT of 1,360 acres of Land on the salt water
river, the Little Ogeechee, eight miles iro n
Savannah. It has on it a dwelling hnoee eighty feet
long, of three floors, all finished in the brat maum 1.
(torn which there is an unobstructed view to the

Island cotton of fine quality The river abounds in
scale fl-h, as well as excellent oysters, crabs, prawn
and shrimp; game abounds through the neighbor
hood. The place possesses salubrious mineral sprlnga,
and Its never-tailing wells fuml^ the most palatable
water. There are two roads to it from fbvannah. one
of them through a shady pine-barren, Rrm and hut
little travelled. The other road approaches by an
avenue a mile long, over-arched by evergreen trees
and shaded through the day ; it opens on an exten
sive lawn, terminating at the ornamental gioumls
which surround the house. There ie an abundance of
bearing fig’ trees and strawberries. Tne creeping
blackberries, which excel the northern Lawton, can
not be estimated in qnantitv. The garden contains
beds or good asparagus, plenty of globe artichoke
plants, wild cherry trees, Ac The situation is healthy
It U admirably stilted throughout the year for a hotel
or boarding house, or cottages for persons doing busi
ness in Savannah, or seeking pare air, health and
pleasnre. The Atlantic A Gulf Railroad puts dowu
and takes up passengers on the place, within three
hundred yards of the house.
Also, another tract of Too acres, or more, of high
land and rice swamp, with plenty of wood, within a
mile of the former tract.
Also, a Rice Plantation of 360 acres, on Argyle Isl
and, on Savannah river, ten miles from the city, 32uAj
acres of which are under bank. There are a steam
engine and a threshing maebino on the place.

Ktc. 1. Be it ordalued by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the city or savannah in council assembled, and
it Is hereby ordained by tlie authority of the game.
That on and after first day of January next, 1866
taxes and revenue for the support of the govern
ment of the city of Savannah, and for the advantage
and benefit of the inhabitants thereof, shall be as
sessed, levied ami rjised at and after the following
rules, that Is to say :
1. At the rate of one per rentum per annum 011
the valuation for the year 1830, of all rest estate In
the city limits, dedneting from said valuation snch
depreciation as may have occurred by fire or milita
ry occupation, aud'where 110 Income is derived from
such property, such valuation, however, to exist
and be a basis only until a new valuation shall have
been completed under the authority of Council
Provided, nevertheless, that said valuation for 1860
shall be the basis for returns ot real estate on the
first day of January next, and until Council shall
further order.
2. One-half of one per centum on gross sales of
merchandise, (including sales of liquors,) exceDt
cotton. *
.1. Oue-teuth of one per centum on gross sales of
cotton.
4. Oue per eentum on all commissions derived
from any business transactions (other than sales of
merchandise) by any factor, auctioneer, broker, for
warding, shipping, or commission merchant, and
one per centum on the value of allfurniture, jewelry
and plate worth over three hundred dollars.
6. One per centum on all incomes derived from
salaries, ami the pursu.t of any profession, faculty,
trade or calling whatsoever.
6. One per centum on gross receipts of any busi
ness transactions not included in the foregoing, anil
inclmUng all insurance companies and agencies,
gas companies, express companies, cotton presses,
all receipts for freight and for passage money which
are payable In the city, aud all hotels aud restaurants.
7. One per eentum on the gross earnings of every
bank, bank agency and banker.
8. On every horse and mule, except those actually
used In wagon9, drays, trucks, or other vehicles, for
wblch badges may have been taken out, one dollar
per month.
Sej. 2. And be It rnrther ordained bv the authority
aforesaid, That whenever, under tills or any other
Ordinance of said city, any return may be required
or any tax be assessed or due, by or from any non
resident company or corporation, the return shall he
made and (lie tax be payable by the agent or other
manager or director of snch company or corporation,
and for every default, execution shall Issue accord-
ingly: and ti-atin the case of every person or persons
liable or subject to make a return under this or any
other Ordinance, and where default mav be made,
execution shall issue for a double tax on the imme
diately previous return, and if no return shall have
been made then the party In default shall be liable
to a penalty of $200, for which the City Treasurer
shall forthwith issue execution, and In all cases of
default in making returns or payment of taxes, exe
cutions shall Issue ami the taxes and penalties col
lected in the manner now pointed out by existing
Ordinances ; and that the same rnle shall apply to
the cases of persons falling or refusing to take out
badges or licenses : Provided, always, that nothing
herein contained shall Interfere with the right of the
police court to lufiict fines or other penalties herein
prescribed.
Sec. 3. And belt fuaher ordained by the authority
aforesaid,That the following persons andpartii s «hall
be compelled, and are hereby required to take out
licenses annually, on the first day of January or
within ten days there .fter.nnd independently or the
income or commission tax, and to pay for such li
cense the sums severally hereinafter designated
that is to say ;
Every auctioneer, a license annually at the price
of $200; every wholesale and wholesale and retail
dealer In goods, wares, and merchandise ex
clusive of liquor license, a license annually at
the price of fifty dollars; every retail dealer an
annual license, exclusive of liquor license at
the price of $25 ; every bank, hunker, or bank
agent engaged in buying or selling exchange an an
nual license at the price of $100; every person or
house dealing In exchange, aud e eery broker, money-
broker, and pawn-broker, an annual license at the
price of $100; every Insurance company or agency
foreign or otherwise, un aunual license at the price
of $100; the same for eacli and every agency, every
the keeper or keepers of a hotel an annual license

at the price of $20; every manufacturer of soda

soap-bo ler, tanner, and founder, for each establish
ment. an annual license at the price of $60 ; every
gas litter an annual license at the price of $25; every
attorney at law, phy sician, dentis., daguerrean ar
tist, photographists, and amhrotyper an annual li
cense at the price of $26, it being understood that In
all cases one license shall be sufficient for 01 e firm

and who Is not a resident of the city or state, i,n an-

out license shall be fined, on conviction, $100 for e .eh

or liable to take out any such license or badge, and
railing to do so for ten days after the said first day

the licenses shall be 9lgned by the Mayor, attested
by the Clerk, and have Impressed on them the seal
of the city.
Sue. 4. And be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That every male resident of said city, be
tween the;ages of twenty-one and sixty years shall
be liable to a poll or capitation tax of one dollar an
nually, except only sucli of said persons as may be
entitled to registry and to vote at city elections, and
who shall register their names and pay for the same.
Sec. 6. Aud tie it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That every owner or keeper of a dog
shall pay for such dog the animal tax of three dollara.
Sec. 8. And lie It further ordalned.by tiie authority
aforesaid, That on and after the first day of January
next the price of a license to retail spirituous liquors
for one year shall be one hundred and fifty dollars,
and the applicant shall be required to submit as se
curities. two responsible freeholders of the neighbor
hood as a prerequisite to the issue of said license;
and for a wholesale liquor license the price shall be
one hundred dollars.
Sec. 7. Ami be It further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That all returns required by this Ordi
nance for real estate, income, and commissions,
shall be made quarterly, that Is to say, on the first
day of April, the first day of July, the first day of Oc
tober, and the first day of January of each year or
within ten days thereafter, respecilvely, for the three
mouths immediately preceding such respective days,
and for gross sales returns shall be made between
the first and tenth day of each month for the preced
ing month, heginulng with the month of February
next, 1866.
Sec. 8. And be it further ordained by the authority
aforesaid,That all Ordinances aud parts of Ordinances
•o far as they nitllt«te with this Ordinance, be, and
they are hereby repealed.
