THE SPBM6 TRADE. '
Awhile back commercial circles through
out the country were somewhat desquieted
by the apprehension that the conflict be
tween the Executive and Congress iPould un
settle and embarrass the monetary sj'stem of
onr government,'and it was for this reason
that the effect’ of the veto message in the
large cities was noticed with almost painful
interest,. The message of Hie President,
however, exhibited so much regard for con
stitutional order, for the restoration of cor
dial relations between the two sections of
the Union, for the preservation of the public
credit and for the economical administration
of the govern meut that, instead of weaken
ing. it has imparted more firmness and sta
bility to our financial affairs than they have
experienced for some time. This is certainly
«n agreeable feature to contemplate in the
present gloomy aspect of things generally,
and, we think, foreshadows that when it
may he considered as settled that the Presi
dent’s policy of restoration will prevail, the
national currency and securities may defy all
rumored plots and contrivances for diprecia-
ii u .r iui-ir value either at home or abroad.
The favorable and unexpected financial ef
fect cf the veto message will revive, like
wise, the despondent tradesmen in regard to
the opening of the spring trade in the south
ern fatales. Some of our leading journals
are already expressing the opinion that busi
ness will open briskly this spring, and predi
cate it thus : the financial status ol a large
part of the community of the south, has been
such that they have hitherto been unable to
replenish their threadbare wardrobes, or to
re-stock their devastated plantations. Ow-
intr to the cheering prospect of a floe mar
ket, a large extent of cotton will be raised in
each of the States adapted to its growth.
By means of the system of advances upun
the year’s crop, so commou at the south, a
more plentiful supply of funds will soon be
at the disposal of planters and merchants.
And with this supply of funds will come ex
tensive investments in the articles of which
The southern market has for some time past
been denuded. Additional reasons are of
fered for expecting a revival of trade in this
quarter of the Union in the gratifying ac
count oi tee improvement visible in onr po
litical and domestic relations, as given by
SPi Graat-md confirmed by Gen. Sherman.
‘ We cauttflg jffift we coucur fully in
the vie^rij||pp|PHBy expressed by our
more hqflvfipjf,.^gjj(jj(praries, yet, the pros
pects, taken SifHftBofir, for a lively opening
of trade seem to be favorable.
That we aie not in error upon the subject,
is feiiowu by I he noticeable fact that the in
telligent and enterprising merchants of Sa
vannah, embracing every class,' are now re
reiving and opening unusually large stocks
of every variety nf merchandize suited to the
market; and that they are offering them to
purchasers, as we know from personal ob
servation, upon terms not only reasonable,
but accommodating, bespeaks their growing
confidence in the recuperative energies of
our people.
Disastucus Fire at St. Louis.—On the
night of the 27lh ultimo, four large first-class
steamboats lyiug at the wharf in St. Louis,
Mo., were burnt to the water’s edge. The
loW, including the damage to freight on the
wharf, is estimated at three quarters of a
mi!lion of dollars. The safe of the Adams’

yesterday she IcA having, far the first time since the
close of the war, received-permission to leave the State

notwithstanding the many reports that she and her

Obsequies of Gen. Jackson.—The funeral obsequies
of Gen. John K. Jackson took place from the First
P. esbyterian Church in Augusta on Thursday after
noon. Rev. Dr. Wilson delivered an impressive and
eloquent discourse upon the distinguished dead. The
remains were escorted to the cemetery by the different
societies to which the deceased belonged, followed by a
large concourse of people. At the grave prayer was
offered up by Rev. Mr. Cuthbert, after which the
