Health ofllcer, but he pronounced her 1 * not ■ case of
small-pox.. He also said that this woman had came to
the barracks about three weeks ago and aaked for
lodgings for the night which he gave her. The Mayor
then ordered that she be taken care of and sent to her
friends if she had any.
This woman presented a shocking appearance, her
face being covered with sores not unlike those of small
pox. She looked as though she might once have been
an intelligent woman, and we afterwards learned that
she had been a school teacher.
A German named Dodge was charged with vagrancy.
Lt. Howard testified that he found him on Monday
about attempting to put an end to his life by throwing
himself from the bluff to the ground below. He had
already measured the distance, and when he stopped
him and asked him the reason for his conduct, the
prisoner said that he was starving; that he could not
endure his sufferings longer and wanted to die. An
officer was directed to interpret—the prisoner pre
tending to not understand English—when the would-
be suicide said he came here from New York about
nine weeks ago; that he could get nothing to do and
had had nothing to eat for some time. The officer
stated that there were a gang of these people who
were prowling about, living as best they could, and
that a gentleman about thirty or forty miles from the
city wanted to make a contract with them, but they
would not go so far away from the city; they would
rather stay here and take their chances.
His Honor ordered him to be turned over to the
Committee on Streets and Lanes and be made to work
on the crossings, and to be locked up at nights. There
are stringent laws in force tending to prevent cap
tains of vessels arriving here from bringing these
vagrants and landing them to become a source of an
noyance and expense to the public, and why not en
force them ? If the guilty parties cannot be found,
and it is positive they came from New York, why not
ship them back ?
A man named Wm. Dawson was arraigned for
drunkenness in the streets. He stated he came from
Millen and wanted to go to New York; that he had had
nothing to cat on Monday, and that he was not drunk
but weak. Mayor Anderson fined him two dollars,
but Mr. Stewart, the clerk, not being able to find
them, he was turned over to the charge of the officers
to work out the amount on the city improvements.
-A man named Gleason was arraigned on the charge
of violating the city ordinances by driving at too
rapid a rate through the streets, running down the
pedestrian and abusing the arresting officers. One
witness testified that the defendant was riding a horse
and ran him down when he seized the bridle of the
horse, and the accused struck him over the head.—
Chiaf Anderson testified that while inthe barracks he
acted in an extremely disorderly and impertinent
manner, telling the witnesses whom he was examin
ing that they were d—d smart &c„ that he resisted
being searched, and said he would soon have a picket
of soldiers to release him; and that he called the offi.
cers a set of d—d thieves, besides using other appro-
brious epithets. In answer to an interogatory of
Mayor Anderson, he stated that he was an employe of
the Government in a civil capacity, and that he did
not run the witness down as alleged: that he had
caught his horse suddenly by the bridle, jerking him
out of the saddle, at the same time calling him a foul
name, when he struck him.
The Mayor fined him thirty dollars, and a man
named Hagnan who had been summoned as a witness
in the case, and been ordered to appear at 10 o'clock,
but had not done so, was fined five dollars for disre
garding the summons.
The case of breaking furniture, reported one day
last week, and which was to have been brought up
yesterday was settled by the prosecutrix withdrawing
the charge and paying costs of court.
