TUESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 27, 1864.

Meeting oi the Citizen*.
A meeting of the citizens of Savannah is call
ed ter to-morrow, at tweive(l2) o’clock, to take
action in reference to the course to be pursued
by the city in its present condition. Tois meet
ing js a very important one, and must stamp
the character of Savannah in all its future, for
weal or for woe, to an extent but little dreamed
of by many persons who will read the notice
tor its call in to-day’s paper.
If the city ot Savannah, planting itself
squarely and fully under the Government of
the United States, shall vote to make her once
uioreacity of the Union, free and unqualified,
she yvill at once possess a power and an influence
to which she hasnever yet attained, and never
mil attain in any other way. On the other
hund should the vote of the people be still tor
war, she must accept it with all its conse
quences, aud this she well knows, and none
better. There has always been a strong Union
uenliment in Savannah, and although by IOTCe,
cajolery aud other* means, she has been
kept iu the “War V.uh,” yet her aspirations
and love bave always turned to tbe old Union.
Then let a full and united voice go up to
morrow, and let it speak the feelings of the
people, that come wlfct may they will stand
once more, with a full and united determina
tion to live and die under the Old Flag, the
blessings and the privileges of which we never
realized until shut out from them. Such is our
view, aud such we believe to be the wish ol
THE PEOPLE.
To lire Citiaeua of Savannah.
Iu the Providence ot God your city has once
more become subject to the Government ot the
United Slates, and the old tUg ot our count) y
waves over you, as an evidence of the fact that
a couspiiacy agaiusl the superior national au
thority cannot prevail, in opposition to the in
telligent patriotism of the loyal people. W e
have not come here to despoil your homes, or
to subjugate you, except so far as to compel
your allegiance to the beneficent govern men t
tor which wc tight, and which we have repeat
edly offered our lives to maintain.
The rebellion that was inaugurated nearly font
years ago, is fast waning in power, and one af
ter another of the Slates and important cities
that it has held in its giasp, are giving away
before the majesty and power of tbe legitimate
govprumeut, which is upheld by great armies
under the most able leaders the world ever saw.
We readily admit the br every of your peoph >
but we despise the cause in which it has beau
proven, and we earnestly advise such of you as
buve been engaged in promoting the war
against our common country to renounce yonr
allegiance to the so-called Confederacy, and
emerge from your bondage to error into the
light of truth aud an enlarged patriotism.
The end of thenar approaches. No intelli
gent mind can fail to see lhat the unequal con
test is drawing to a close; but so long as citi
zeus of your Stale are found in hostile array
against the general government established by
our fathers, so long will our armies be quarter
ed in your mw«t, audyonr substance approuri
itccu IU UiUltllfcUU LUCLU. VT.. —J 1
There are few men in the army of the Union
who do not fully appreciate the necessity t!
maintaining the ur.ity ol the States, lu order to
transmit permanent peace aud tranquility lu
those who shall come alter them.
Actuated by this high aad sacred purpose
we countenance no acts on the part of our
army toward those in arms against us, except
each as are authorized by the usages of civiliz
ed warfare throughout the world. We would
rather, if possible, bring you back to the great
brotherhood of States by appealing to your
reason and the utter hopelessness of your effort
to establish au independent government.
We love our flag, and the hallowed associa
tions which cluster arouud it, reachiug back to
the iufaucy of the nation.
We point to it reverently and ask you to
modify your attachment to the dogma of State
Rights to such a degree that you cau see a high
er excellence in the Kigbts and welfare of the
nation, l'he flag under which your people are
lighting, and which for nearly four years has
waved over your beautiful eity, will never ag du
be hoisted within its limits. You have been
redeemed from its illegitimate authority, and
brought into the matveic; as light of true Liber
ty, as symbolised in lire old Stars and Stripes.
Gradually, bu*, with majesty, as morning
sun moves up from the eastern horizon toward
the zenith, illuminating all beneath and around
it, bus the ftig of our country advanced step by
step over the revolted States, until to day there
is little left within the ancient landmarks that
is subject to the heresy of Secession.
We offer you this flag aud ask you to once
more enshrine it within your hearts. Accent
the booD, as you can readily do without, any
sacriflce of manhood, and let the fact go forth
to the world that the Empire State of the
South, lu the language of the motto at the head
of this paper, has beeu Jfat.ten.ed, Degenerated
and Disenthralled. vv
