lishing, organizing, anil regulutiu^ a regular night
watc.i or guard for the better protecting the city
of Savannah, for regulating tlie puy thereof, and
for oilier purposes connected therewith.
Sec. 1. Be it ordained by tlie Mayor nnd Al
dermen of the city of Suvunnuh and hamlets there
of in Council assembled, and it is hereby ord fin
ed by the audio,-i y of tho same. That from and
afler the passage oi U)i*ordniuncc,tlie night watch
or guard for the protection of Uie city of Savan
nah sh iU consist of a superintendent, a deputy
superintendent, and three division sergeants and
forty-lbur pr,vales.
Sec. 2. Be it further ordained. That the said su
perintendent, deputy superintendent, und divis
ion serge m s, shall bo elected by Council at the
first rt-g.tlor meeting iu each anil eve,y January,
and the privates shall be appointed as is herein li
ter specified, and Uie pay of the said superintend
ent shall bo eighty dollars a mouth; of t ie said de
puty superintendent sixty doilarsu month; of each
of the said division sergeants thirty-live dollars a
month, uud of each of the privates twenty-five

Sec. 3. tie it further ordained, That the said of
ficers shall be armed at his owtt expense with a
sword or hunger, und a pair of pistols und provi

house, (except when required for duty) and at
least once in every week thereafter tQ inspect tho
sume and see that they arc kept and preserved in
good order.
See. 18. Beit further ordained, Thntone months
pay of the ofiicers and privates of tho city watch
shall he retained in the city treasury after the same
shall have become due, to meet any Hues impos
ed. but the Mayor or acting Mayor may, at his
discretion, and under the circumstances of tho
case, give on o.-der or draft on the treasury to any
ollicer or privutu for such portion of such pre
served pay ns in lus discretion may seem proper,
and the said draft or order shall be paid forthwith
by tlie city treasurer out of the city funds,

ances nnd parts of ordinances corresponding with
