We allude to a late occurrence which
took place in the debtor’s apartment of

Grafton—in which, An the evening of

in cool blood and without the lead pro- 1
vocation. From representations made
by the dcceafcd, after the bloody feene
was aded, it fee ms that while cfq. Free
man was ieat vl on a ltool, n.ar and in j
front of the itove which wanned the]
room, and his then fellow piifoncr,
Starkweather, was in a closet attached
to ihe room ; between the hours of 8
and gin the evening, this monller came
up bc’tiMid the former, and with a large
knife with two edges, which he had
wotn concealed under his arm, during
vis confinement and for many previous]
months, stabbed Mr Freeman in the bo ]
1 y below the riba, with a repeated and
mortal broke—Mr- F. immediately gave
ah alarm, which brought Mr. Sraikwea

while in the attitude of defending hiru

wi'h t.ie letter f. rite piii.mer appeared
| to >e greatly atTrcted after the inhiaion of the
j puniihmem, and made many protestations of
| Ins innocence. He laid, that he had noth

supposed, governed by the law and l! e evi
dence—but he said, or intimated that the
j Hate’s witncl-i, Frater, had committed per.
jury, an.l that he would have to anf.ver for it
to in 3 God—and tie hoped that Gad w. u’d
loon make that perjury niamfeft. This is
the fubilance as ne ity as can tie recollected,
of what was incoherently exprelied bv him,
apparently under the influence of much men
tal and bodily agony. But nis believed, that
Parker, can as readily alTunie the charailer of
an honrji injure! m.m, as he cun that of th;
v’-Um* ; 1 > confp.cunus ha Iven his h.pocrify
heretofore: Ii tie credo therefore .night to be
attached to his tears or tus proteflations.—
Protein like, he has b- en the devo.ee and
the plunderer, as the ficuatinn in which he
was placed, his interell, or circumftanecs
required. It may be remarked, that his con
viflaon on Saturday, did not depend on th
leftiinony of Fraler—nf that teilimony had
beenomitted'here was Hill fullicient tellimo. v
left to jmlify a cor.viH.ion upon princi[)l< s ( f
lav;, and that evidence drived too, through
die moll refpe(Slat)le channels.
I is a curious til that previous to the
imprisonment of Parker, robberies and burg
laries were f> frequent as to create very Io
rious alarm among our citizens; and that
Luce Ins imprisonment none have been c-’iiv
mitted. —This speaks a Hrong language.
