A Begoau’s Portion...Some few daysa>-o,
when beggars w ere more frequent jix our bl
and than at prelent, it was cultomary amon
this class of people to bestow, as a portion mi
their daughters, if they married into the socie
ty, a certain number of (tracts as a portion.
One of theie itinerant matrons was lamenting ;
that her son-m-law leemed to be in no way of
accumulating an independent fortune—and,
said Hie, “I gave up to the- girl three streets
when Hie married him, and those, well begged
art worth more than hail a guinea a day !”

In the Biflaux ifiand, on the weftem coast
o Africa, the fucceifion to the throne is regu
kted in the following extraordinary manner : i
Four of the ftrengeil Noblemen carrying ttie
body of the deeded King to the grave, on
rtaching which, they tols the bier in the air,
aid thus propel the body leveral times, till at
lift they let it-fall on the grandees, who have
prostrated themfelvcs on the earth, and the
perlon on whom the royal body relts, is imme
diately proclaimed King. From the arrange
ments, however, that are made, the election
cannot fall upon any but a Member of the
Royal Family, that is, one of the- Tons, brothers
or nephews cf the decealed. The fuccefsful
candidate is Immediately proclaimed, & has
the diadem encircled on his royal brow,
which is two folds ol rope twilled round J.is
