Having appropriated the fun of seven mil

to the payment of the imcrdc and gradual
ext nguifhment of the principal or the national
debt, the prefrnt admirfftr ation have made
die following tctrcnclimcuis in the public ex

[Here follows aftatement which has already
appeared, making the retrenchments amount
to 1,021,55? dollars.]
Ir followed that so ne of the public burthens

was necessary to ictain in ferviece : and the
interna! revenues, derived from another set of
collected by a different set of officers, at
at an ex pence of fifteen per cent, were before
them for fblefi. ion, & which ought to nave been
preferred ? The dunes on bit, on bohea tea,
on brown fjgar be coffee were comprehended
in the impost ; were hud by rhe fir ft congress,
and from time to time increased by i’ubfc
ouent laws have been collected at a final! ex

the inturnai duties. A reduction offo much’

net imported refined Jugars , which are fubjecl tc

and thus corupting the moral, both of officers
and people.
h it poflible that a wife and prudent
legifiature should helltate between
them ? is it not obvious, that the whole
if any part, of these internal taxes ought
to be repealed, because a partial repeal
would retain all the collecting officers
and confequcntly increase the expence
of col 1 e fit ion compared with the amount
To]’edit'd ? is it not evident, that the
proposal to repeal the duties on fait, on

Is there in Mafiachufetts an individ
ual. even if he approved of the system
of patronage, of loaning and taxation,
adopted by the laid adminifixation,
would consent to the continuance of a
burthen lb unequal, and so oppreiiive to
the citizens of this flare ? who can de
r.y the merit of the prelent congress, in
contracting file wants of government,
and lightening the burthens of the peo
ple ? or, who, in fine, can withold his
admiration at the macnanimitty of the
chief magi [irate, in commending a
mcafure which mud diminiih his own
influence and power, while it dilmifies
from public service, and returns to pri
vate fta cions, four hundred active dif
zppointed spirits, to increi le the pro
portion cf his political enemies, and add
to the number and zeal of his calumni
ators? between the calumnies of such a
fa cl ion, and their own true irtereft, the
people now have leilure to decide. In
Torming rite ultimate decision, there is
less need of inutility and refinement
than of candour, common sense and
arithmetical computation. If there is
any certainty in principles, or any de
pendence cn rc.ifioii and experience, the
diicharge 01 e/Tiefs officers, efpcclaliy
of thole c-Ticerncd in the pecuniary op
era dons of government, is effentialiy fa
vorable to freedom and rcpublicanifm.
If two and two make four, if a part L
less than the whole, tlie retrenchment
of unneceudi y public exoences, the cor
refpomlent reduction of public taxes,
and the consequent fimpiitication of oui
public concerns, are (b many points
gained in favor of the people, J el
iow-citizens of Mafiachufettts, themea
lure under consideration is particularly
interesting to us. Jf the repeal of that
unequal lyftem of internal taxes is not
materially beneficial to cur interoft,
calculation is reheat and arithmetic a liar.
for the Georgia Republican.
Mr firs. Lyon & ‘Morfe,
ft Publication has appeared thrdugh
L iu the generous channel of y.our pa
per, recommending the cle&ion of Mr.
M’Alilter, in preference to that of Mr.
Bryan. The claim of the latter, as
recognized by the Democrat, on the
fuifragesof the citizens of Georgia, is
very excenfive. It is generally conce
ded that he is a gentleman of good ta
lents and unimpeachable integrity, and
one who is no Ids firm in his republican
ism than he is willing that it be made
uno vvn.
It is further observed that “theelec
tion of Mr. M*Al-.fter will befir promote
the cauie of republic anil m and the public
good. 0 Thus gentleman has ever occu
pied a refpeclable feat inlbciety and is,
in my opinion, a man of incontrover
tible refiiitude, but chat his election will
more beneficially advance the cause of
republicaniTm and the public good, than
if Mr. Bryan was to be defied, ] can
ot readily accede to. If ability, com
bined with many of the moll diftin
guifiled virtues, are fufficientto promote
rep able anilm, rest allured that they
are well centred in Mr. Bryan.
