LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE
JNHHiM.VITON OF THAT ROMAN
CATHOLIC PRIESTS OATH.
Dear S’ir: Several men have asked
r>? tv have you send they; literature.
One has seen your magazine, I
him a number of copies which
he read with great pleasure, ;md
among the number was one contain
ing the na;.h that the priests take:
this h«H xav« to r.te brother-in-law to
read and asked nun if that oath was
genuine. and he said It was. 1 can
not, recall the uarae of the brother
in-law just now. but nave mot him
a number «.>.» rimes. lie studied for
the priesthood, but when he was
asked to lake th.xl oath he would go
no fur th er.
I firmly Lcllevo that you are right
o?i foreign missions, and that the
churches are falling far from the
high mark for which thev were ori
ginally founded.
About twenty years ago when dis
cv.ssing the churches with a friend
of mine (Chas. Shivers.) who is now
in Oregon, I told him that ! believed
the day would come when the
churches as they now are would pass
away.
It is hardly reasonable to suppose
that the God who is the embodiment
of mercy, love and justice, would let
such mockery continue, and I am a
member of the M. E. church..
Yours truly,
lowa. S. M. HARVEY.
WHO CHANGED THE SABBATH
DAY?
My Dear Sir: I have read about
everything you have published in the
“Jeffs” relative to Rome and Ro
manism and note with much interest
and concern the undeniable thorough
ness of your arraignment of Catholi
cism so far, and most heartily en
dorse end applaud your dauntless
and or,compromising courage, but I
do think that when you have knocked
the props out from under their
creed you should not leave them
sprawling on the ground, but rath or
point them to Christ the crucified,
risen and exalted Savior of the
world.
Regarding you. as authority on the
accomplishments, purposes and in
tents of the church of Rome, I would
ask a question relative to the change
of the Sabbath from the seventh to
the first day of the week. In 1892
a Catholic priest in answer to an in
quiry on this point replied: “I have
repeatedly offered SI,OOO to any one
who can prove to me by the Bible
alone that I am bound to keep Sun
day holy. There is no such law in
the Bible. It is a law of the Holy
Catholic church alone. The Bible
says remember that thou keep holy
the Sabbath day. The Catholic
church says, No! By my divine power
I abolish the Sabbath day and com
maud you to keep holy the first day
of the week. And, lo! the entire
world bows down in reverent obedi
ence to the command of the Holy
Catholic church.”
Now, if we have the ammunition
and our powder is dry, why not go
gunning for that SI,OOO and begging
the game continue observing the first
day of the week? Otherwise if our
powder is lacking, or wet, why abuse
Romanism six days and bow down
and kiss the pope’s feet every Sun
day?
Did the Roman Catholic church
abolish Saturday, the seventh day
Sabbath and institute Sunday the
first day Sabbath?
Yours truly,
Milner, Ga. L. M. BROWN.
Answer.
The early Christians changed
from Saturday to Sunday.
That was long before the day of
Roman Catholic popery.

THE JEFFERSONIAN
MORE ABOUT CLAY-EATING. IN
ALABAMA.
Dear Sir: Have you read “Catho
lic Aid for the Clay-eaters,” on page
1440 in Literary Digest of June 13?
It is one of the most disgusting arti
cles I have read in a long time. The
claims made for -Romanism as to
Alabama are outrageous. Every one
knows, who knows anything, that
the Methodist and Baptist churches,
both entering the Alabama section
on the same day in 19GS, have with
the assistance of some of trie weaker
Protestant churches been the her
alds of civilization in Alabama.
While Alabama stands toward the
bottom of the list in her per capita
appropriation for education, that $4
per capita in Alabama amounts to
more than twice or three t.imeSxthe
amount in sonic other States.
Alabama is not at the bottom
when it comes to considering actual
illiteracy. But Mr. Watson you
know Alabama. She has some draw
backs, but what she is on the other
hand, you know Romanism has torn
down rather than built up.
Please open up your artillery on
this article.
Very respectfully,
Ala. HENRY M. HURST.
(Comment.)
Mr. Hurst is a Methodist preacher,
of Manchester. Ala. Ills indignation
is natural.
The article in the Literary Digest
was a libel on the whole South.
The managing man on the Digest
is now a rank Romanist, nam‘ed
Cuddihy; and, ever since he got con
trol, the Digest has artfully insinu
ated popish dope in its columns.
Nover a week passes by that Cud
dihy docs not squirt some of his
am bier into our eyes. T. E. W.
ANOTHER STRONG FRIEND IN
TEXAS WRITES.
Dear Sir: I have often thought
I would attempt writing to you and
the Jeffersonian, and let you know
my admiration for you and pdur
principles your courage and fearless
ness.
Mr. Watson I’m glad we’ve got
one man who is not afraid to pub
lish the truth and expose the rotten
ness of Catholicism and other hum
buggery. I have been reading both
your Jeffersonians for several years,
my father being a subscriber. He
also thinks there is no man like you
Mr. Watson. I sec you have been
indicted again at ..Augusta by the
Federal grand jury, they hate to hear
the truth told on them. I want to
say that every true and patriotic citi
zen ought to be with you through
the battle for the rights of the com
mon people and against imposture.
I for one endorse you, Mr. Watson,
in all your undertakings. It’s too
bad that other people cannot un
derstand that, you are fighting for
them and for the betterment of all
hard working people. I have read
your publications on the Frank case
and Burns also. I think you
hit them exactly right. All that
stuff Burns tried to work up didn’t
work very well, especially around
Marietta. I think you are doing a
great good, and I only wish that
your paper was scattered throughout
the universe. If the public could
only understand and read your paper
a while they could see better then.
Hoping you much more success in
the future, and hope all patriotic
people will stay with you.
Your friend and admirer,
Texas. J. D. CUNNINGHAM.

YES: IT WAS NOTHING MORE
THAN ANOTHER BLUFF.
My Dear Sir: I enclose yen clip
ping from t.bo Muskogee Timas-Deni
ocrat of April the 20th, relative to a
purported answer by the Catholics
of Muskogee to the arraignment that
you and the Menace have given
them.
It seems to me that their answer
is just a bit untimely. After you
have filed your petition (Declara
tion) and have came along with your
proof, and for four years have made
the Bishops, Archbishops, Popes and.
Cardinals testify as living witnesses,
and have introduced as evidence a
storeroom of “ancient documents” in
the form of all history—the reverend
chronicler of the grave, it seems to
me that the plaintiff has made out
his case, and that it is up to them
to begin to disprove some facts in
the record instead of filing their
general denial; for under the “rules
of the game,” it ought to be stricken
from the record. Under no condi
tion could bare opinions and empty
conclusions become evidence in this
matter. Yours truly,
OKLAHOMA PROTESTANT.

AS TO KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS.
Hon. Thos. E. Watson: To settle
a friendly dispute, will you please
answer the following question
through the AVeekiy Jeffersonian:
Are all Knights of Columbus Cath
olics?
Yours truly,
Bremen, Ga. C. F. DODSON.
(Answer.)
All Knights of Columbus are ap
proved Roman Catholics.

A CORRECTION AS TO ST. JOHN’S
MILITARY COLLEGE.
Dear (Plr: In the issue of July, in
an article containing the letter
signed, “A Protestant Friend,’’ there
is an error that every man from
Maryland wishes that you would cor
rect. It is this: Page 17 2, last
column, “And why is St. John’s
Military College, also Catholic stuck
right in the heart of Annapolis, Md.,
near the U. S. Naval Academy?”
Now, the fact is, the College re
ferred to is_not Catholic in any
sense. It is St. John’s College, and
if it can be said to be under any
religious influence at all that in
fluence is Episcopalian. The Vice-
President, as he always called him
self, was my teacher, and he was
Dev. Dr. Nelson, of the Protestant
Episcopal church.
The College is partly suported by'
the State.
Very respectfully,
Md. S. A. LEHMAN.
