Judge Reagan Is a
Good Old Demo
cratic Bolter!
Editor Jeffersonian,
Thomson, Ga.
EAR SIR: It was not my de
sire to be drawn into a con
troversy with ex-Judge Rea
gan. In giving the facts con-
0
cerning Judge Reagan’s acts
in the past, I will say that it was
very distasteful to me. Being born
'and raised in old Henry County, it
is but natural that I should love her
and all her people, and whatever I
might say, or do, that might be dis
tasteful to any citizen of the county,
I should consider it a solemn duty
and not a pleasure. Nothing per
sonal has ever entered my mind in
this matter, and I shall not allow it
to do so. For personally, I hold
Judge Reagan in the highest esteem,
and I have always considered him
one of Henry County’s best, and
most valued citizens. In all his ca
reer, I don’t know that I have ever
fought him. It was not until he, as
Chairman of the State Democratic
Committee, took as he evidently
viewed it, control of the Democracy
of Georgia, and become so dictatorial
that I deemed it a solemn duty to
file a protest. Now, after ask
howledging my right to criticise him
as a public official, in very nearly
the next sentence he accuses me of
bushwhacking. For what? Simply
for telling the truth, that’s all. For
in the very next sentence he ack
nowledged bolting Bryan in 1896.
Not only has my charge against him
been proven by facts in the case, but
take his own testimony, and he him
self bears me out. Now in 1896 I
was only a boy in my teens, and
could not vote, but I shall never
forget when my father came home
that night and told how Col. Reagan
had bolted the Bryan ticket that day,
and I will here remind the Judge
that it was he that gave me my first
lesson on bolting. If it bad not
been for E. J. Reagan setting that
example before me, when I was
young and eager to learn, and easily
impressed like all boys, I might
possibly be today a hide bound Dem
ocrat like Judge Reagan, supporting
two of the most unprincipled men
in Georgia today. But he says he
was not present and had nothing to
do wth Bryan’s nomination. Why,
wasn’t he a Democrat? Could he
not have been present? Was he not
one of the elect? Was he not a
chronic office seeker about that time?
Why bless his poor benighted soul,
.not a word of protest did we hear
from him. No doubt in my mind
at all, when the more active Demo
cratic were wending their way to the
county court room, the Judge wa's
basking in the warmth of the sun
light as it came twinkling down
through those water oaks that adorn
the court house yard. Oh my, that’s
not it, it was because Watson was on
the ticket that caused him to bolt.
It was Watson and the Populist that
he hated and not Bryan, and he
hates them yet for no other reason
than his boss wants him to. He
says these charges were thoroughly
aired before the legislature and
were turned down. Why of course.
It was an easy matter to white-wash
the Judge then. Did not the ma
jority of that legislature have the
same hatred for Watson and the
Populist then that Reagan had?
Why it was as easy as falling off a
log. But ex-Judge Reagan is try
ing- to confuse the issue by a long
enumeration of his races for the
judgeship.
Now I’m not going to let him side
step or confuse in this matter. That’s
not the issue. The people of Geor
gia don’t care a thrip about his
races for judge. My charge was,
and I renew it now, that he bolted
Bryan in 1896, and I am going to
stand by my guns. Now, we admit
that he flad a perfect right to do so
THE JEFFERSONIAN
if he wanted to. It has been nearly
twenty years now and I have never
heard one word of criticism. It was
freedom of thought, freedom of
speech, guaranteed to him by our
constitution, and all that knew of it
admired it of him. It was not until
he said the people should not do
now, what he did then, that they '
rebelled, and I for one, will not sub
scribe nor submit to the wrongs that
are being heaped upon the people
of Georgia by this Reagan-Smith-
Hardwick combination.
My friend Reagan wants to com
pare conduct and see who it was
committed the greatest sin. Alright,
not let’s see. Bryan was nominated
by the regular organized Democrats,
fair and square, without any fraud,
and with Judge Reagan’s approval,
and he bolted him. Now Smith and
Hardwick were nominated through
fraud, over my protest, and I bolted
them. Now fair minded pople of
Georgia who was it that committed
the greater sin? Its the judge’s in
consistency that makes him a poor
lost sinner. More than that, I am
glad God gave me courage enough
to vote my convictions, for whom, or
against whom I please at any time,
and not be a servile tool of any man
like E. J. Reagan. And then some
people will talk about Democracy,
when they don’t know a Democrat
from a billy goat. Ah, ha, will the
judge excuse me while I laugh a
little bit? No doubt the judge
thought the people were slow to
wrath, but not so. The good Book
tells us, “your works do follow,”
and “your sins will find you out,”
etc. It’s the judge’s sin that found
him out, and nobody is to blame but
Reagan.
Well the judge says he will leave
it to me and “Progressive” to fight
it out, etc. Just so judge, I thank
God there are some true blues left
yet to keep the light burning,- and
fight to the last ditch such dirty
politicians as Reagan, Smith and
Hardwick.
With the common people in
battle array, we can put to rout
the enemies that are seeking to de
stroy our freedom, guaranteed to us
by the constitution. The Judge says
he hopes to live to see bushwhackers
driven out of the Demicratic party,
etc. Yes, I am after bughwhackers
myself, aifd I think I have caught
the biggest one. I think the public
will testify to that. Yes, the judge
is a bolter, so am I, and I want him
to make the most of it. If I live
and nothing happens I will be at
Locust Grove two years hence, why
not make an example of me, and will
he please tell us how he is going to
debar us? He is a lawyer and ought
to know. Does he not know that
all prynaiies are governed by the
State law? Please do tell us judge,
we know no mandate other than the
Jaw. And another thing, it was
whispered around over the country
something that was called the Rea
gan plan. That was before the Ma
con convention, and the plan was in
counties that Brown "carried by a
small majority, the Smith men were
to become dissatisfied and call a
mass meeting and elect Smith dele
gates, file a contest, and so if the
Smith men get in control of the con
vention, turn down the Brown dele
gates and seat the contesting ones.
In other words, seat the Smith dele
gates in place of the regular ones.
I don’t know that this is true, but
it looks mighty suspicious in view
of Reagan’s record at \Macon. I
wonder if he will set us right in
that matter, 1 am eager to learn.
Will bo please enlighten us?
Wasn’t I right when I said that
the judge was in a “mell of a hess?”
So long Judge,
