THE RAILROADS DO AS THEY'
PLEASE ON LOCAL LINES,
WHERE THEY HAVE A
MONOPOLY.
Dear Sir: ] have been reading your
paper lor some time and enjoy it very
much. I have a question to ask you
if it is in the bounds of reason:
I ordered two pieces of furniture
from Chicago, shipped to River Junc
tion, Fla., and the freight was only
$3.18. I then had it shipped to
Greensboro, Fla., and the freight was
$2.95.
It is not over fifteen miles from
River Junction to Greensboro.
Can you tell me why it is the rail
roads are allowed to do the poor
farmers this, way? If possible, I will
appreciate it if you will answer this
in your next issue of The Jeffer
sonian.
Thanking you in advance for
your kindness. Yours truly, ,
Fla. J. L. FLETCHER.
(Comment.)
On through freights from such
places as Chicago, there is competi
tion for the business, hence rates are
reasonable.
From River Junction, Fla., to
Greensboro, Fla., there is (I suppose)
only one line; and therefore the road
charges what it pleases.
The attention of the Florida Rail
road Commission ought to be called
to the case: it might investigate the
local rates and give the shippers some
relief from extortion. T. E. W.
A FLORIDA FRIEND'S TRIBUTE
TO THE JEFF FAMILY.
Dear Sir: I am sending you to
day by special express two boxes of
oranges and one box of grapefruit.
One box of oranges marked (House)
is intended to go up to your dwell
ing, as there are about a dozen
King Tangerines on top layer of
one end for “Miss Georgie.”
The other box of oranges is in
tended for the bunch at the Pub
lishing Plant.
The grapefruit may be disposed
of as you deem proper.
These are sent as a token of my
appreciation of your efforts in be
half of right and justice.
Trusting you may receive.the out
fit in good shape, and all hands en
joy them, I am, yours truly,
Fla. P. L. JENKINS.
THE CATHOLIC MASSACRE OF
PROTESTANTS IN FLORIDA.
Dear Sir: Tn February, Bishop
Curley, of St. Augustine, gave a lec
ture in Jacksonville, which was pub
lished and lauded’ in the daily pa
pers ol Jacksonville. Curley spoke
of the great patriotism of Roman
Catholics. I expected to see you
make some comment of his lecture,
in The Jeffersonian. But I think
you must never have read the lec
ture. I am going to enclose it to
you, for I think you could make a
fine reply.
Bishop Curley lives in St. Augus
tine, the oldest city in the United
States, and named by Menandez, the
man sent by tne King of Spain to
kill and behead all Protestants; the
man that murdered Riboutts’ men,
not as Frenchmen, but as Luther
ans, letting none escape but those
that professed to be Catholics. This
butchery was done within twelve
miles of St. Augustine, at Matanzas,
THE JEFFERSONIAN
and all in the name of Roman
Catholicism.
I think that all history will show
that all patriotic deeds done by
Catholics •were done for the interest
of Roman Catholicism, and I know
you can mention numerous such
American patriotic (?) deeds, such
as Menendez, which have been done
by Roman Catholics in America, and
I think it would be great for those
who are going into ecstacies over
Bishop Curley to see the other side
of the matter, as others see it, and
as it really is.
Yours admiringly,
JEFFERSONIAN SUBSCRIBER.
P. S.—St. Augustine is a great
gathering center for the K. of C. I
wonder how long it will be before
the Pope of Rome will be giving
them such orders as the King of
Spain gave Menendez.
(Comment.)
I saw Curley’s hogwash, and read
it with due contempt; but have had
so many things to handle that I
saved him for a future day.
I will attend to this smooth liar,
Bishop Curley. T. E. W.
A TYPICAL CASE OF ROMANIST
CRIME.
Dear Sir: A few weeks ago your
paper gave a short but concise ac
count of the Scotti-Rouge-Roth
priestly scandal, and this case is
still dragging in the court here, as
you will see from enclosed clipping.
The church and K. of C. are doing
everything in the’r power to dis
credit the unfortunate woman. It’s
an old saying that when you can
not contradict a witness, then abuse
and vilify him. This they are do
ing to the full extent.
Charles I. Denechaud, president
of the Catholic Federation, was sent
to Chicago to trace the past history
of Mrs. Roth, just as if they could
prove the fact that the woman had
not always led a strictly virtuous
life, would justify the priest in rob
bing her of $62,000. They can not
deny that the priest, Scotti, ob
tained the money from her, and of
that sum Father Rouge secured
$21,900 for his speculations. Mrs.
Roth has ample documents to prove
this.
Scotti threatened her that if she
entered suit, he would put her in
the penitentiary, but fled when he
saw she was in earnest, and his
duplicity with her and other women
was about to be exposed. His de
fenders have not dared to produce
him in court, for fear he is the one
who would be put in the peniten
tiary. The papers here, most of
them being under Catholic influ
ence, have given out but vague in
formation about the case, and most
of that discreditable to the woman.
The Item is the only paper in New
Orleans that has given Mrs. Roth
anything like a fair show l . '
Yours truly,

AN ESCORT OF T. E. W.’S
FRIENDS TO AUGUSTA.
Dear Sir: Please state in this
week's paper, that an automobile
escort will gather from different
parts of the State to accompany Mr.
Watson from Thomson to Augusta,
on the day of his trial. Friends from
everywhere invited.
We realize that Mr. Watson, with
his immediate friends, is amply able
to take dare of himself, but Mr. Wat
son, personally, isn’t all. Liberty,
Free Press and Free Speech are on
trial. All AMERICAN INSTITU
TIONS, carved from the privileges
of personal and national liberty, are
on trial. Hence, it is the common
duty of loyal ccitizenship to be there.
Yours truly,
Ga. C. H. KITTRELL.
SOME GOOD SUGGESTIONS.
Dear Sir: The dountry editor of
a large and influential Arkansas
sheet, to whom I gave my March
Watson, returned the magazine with
this notation on the margin: “I sur
render,” meaning that he thought
Leo Frank guilty after having read
your presentation of the case. I
was in McGehee, Ark., and another
man stated in a most positive and
emphatic manner that he was con
vinced, after reading Collier’s, the
Post Dispatch and other bootlicking
papers, that Frank was innocent and
the victim of prejudice, mob near
violence ,etc., and to him 1/ also
passed your magazine for March,
which caused him to reverse his po
sition and declare his ponviction
that Frank is as guilty as Crime can
make him. The moral to this is:
The people have no press, never had
and never will, until they put up at
the county seats a paper owned and
absolutely controlled by them as a
medium through which to exchange
their views, register their kicks and
use as a big stick generally against
the polluters and corruupters of so
ciety and government. My platform
from now on is: Get out niggers;
restricted ownership of land; gov
ernment ownership of the electric
current, and a friendly co-operative
system generally for the benefit of
all the WHITE people, and if that’s
socialism or anarchy, I don’t care.

A NEW CAROLINA FRIEND.
Dear Sir: Enclosed find P. O.
money order for one dollar to re
new my^ subscription for The Jeffer
sonian six months, also another new
subscription for six months, accord
ing to list herewithin. We are both
old Confederate soldiers. I have
been taking The Jeffersonian several
years and can’t do without it, and
have been talking it up every oppor
tunity, for it is the leading paper in
the fight againpt papery, the old
mother of harlots, spreading her
abominations over every nation
where she gets the power, for it is
no church at all, and cares nothing
for the souls of men, but onl£ de
ludes them for money and temporal
power.
Well you know all this, for I look
upon you as being one of the most
gifted men of the times, by the
sledge hammer blows you give the
Roman octopus and all other corrup
tion in high places, and I am with
you red hot and still a-heating. But
I don’t believe we will ever get any
relief through either one of the old
parties, but we must have a new pa
triotic party, and I would, with you
at the head of it.
God be with you.

A REMINDER OF OLD TIMES.
Dear Sir: It is with a great deal
of pleasure I send you this list of
subscribers to your paper. They are
all good, reliable men. I have been
a great admirer of you. I lived in»
Georgia from 1878 to 1895, as a
traveling salesman. I' heard you
give the Hon. L. F. Livingston the
worst walloping T ever heard a man
get, at Conyours, Ga. I believe you
are doing a great work now through
your publications.
With best wishes for your success,
I am,
Yours very respectfully,
N. C. ‘ W. R. COMBS.
