they would not publish such a low, mean
brand of it, themselves.
V hat they know, is that the Roman Cath
olic Church can not live under a full exposure
of its laws, its money-grabbing, its rotten
priesthood, its infamous jailing of women, its
sale of everything sacred, its utter contempt
oi law and of the Bible; its hatred of the free
mind, the free ballot, the free voice and pen.
1 o prevent the American people from learn
ing the whole truth about this horrible group
of secret societies, which they call the Roman
Catholic Church, they are making a desperate

reflects on popery, would be to penalize the
greatest intellects and the grqptest books that
ever lifted mankind out of the Dark Night
of Roman Catholic domination.
This Is the Advertisement Which
The Menace Refused*
'T'IIE editors of the Italian Pope’s American
wig-wags have been jumping on The
Menace, because it refused an advertisement.
They have used the incident as an evidence
that The Menace is not in favor of a’ free
press, except for The Menace.
Now .the Knights of Columbus not only
compelled the St. Louis Globe-Democrat to
throw out the advertisement of my book, “The
Roman Catholic Hierarchy,'’ but forced the
paper to apologize for having printed the ad.
one time.
Ihe other daily papers of the big cities
were so afraid of the Romanist boycott, that
they rejected my advertisement altogether.
therefore, I was very much interested
when the Pope’s American wig-wags and
wiggle-tails made the point on The Menace.
As the name and the address of the would
be advertiser was given, I thought it would
do no harm to write to the gentleman ,and
ask him two questions—
(l) What was the advertisement which
The Menace rejected ?
(2) Would he offer it to The Jeffersonian?
The following is the courteous reply which
the gentleman makes to my letter:
J. KOENIG, President. E. MEYER, Secretary.
Let the World Be Our Country.
To Be Good Our Religion.
Let Us Be Humans in Fact as Well as in Name.
THE TRUE BROTHERHOOD OF MANKIND,

524 Ave. D,
Bayonne, N. J., Apr. 9th, 1915.
Thos. E. Watson, Esq.,
Dear Sir: Your letter of inquiry regarding
the adv. which the Menace refused to publish at
hand. In reply will say that the following is as
near as I can remember the exact wording of the
advertisement in question:
“Religion a Curse! Why?
Does your religious belief cause you to be in
fear of death and the hereafter? If so, this book
will possitively convince you that there is no more
need for such fear than for a child to fear a
boogie.
Price Address
This is the advertisement for which I was will
ing to pay at the rate of $3.00 per line, which that
great shouter for the Freedom of the Press, known
as The Menace, refused to publish. I even send
them a copy of the book, so the publishers could
see for themselves that it contained nothing that
dould be in the least objectionable to a fair
minded person. I notified Mr. Walker, the edi
tor of The Menace, of my intentions of taken the
step I did and waitet nearly two weeks for an
answer from them. They ignored me and I’ toke
the step, which I believe I was justified in taking.
The enclosed circular will inform you of the
contents of the book in question. Within a week
or two we will be prepared to spend $2,000 in
advertising all over the country. Should you be
willing to publish such an adv., including the
1-inch cut you see on circular, we may do busi
ness. If so, send rates.
Trusting that' this will be satisfactory, I am,
Very sincerely yours,
JULIUS KOENIG,
524 Ave. A, Bayonne, N. J.
The circular which Mr. Julius Koenig en-
THE JEFFERSONIAN
closes, is a regular stick of dynamite. I give
it in full:
Dear Reader:
Read this letter—it will interest you. The time
is here for every Man and Woman the world Qver
to awake from that deathlike intelectual slumber
in which ignorance and superstition has kept the
overwhelming majority of the people to this day.
“Religion a Curse! Why?—was written for
the purpose of accomplishing that awakening by
replacing the false and pernicious teachings of
present day creeds with a knowledge of the truth
that will cause people to think and reason for
themselves. This in turn will supplant the exist
ing Religious and Racial hatred, that great ob
stacle to human progres, with brotherly feeling
and thus about the much longed for era of
peace and good wil on Earth.
In its 'main feature the above mentioned pub
lication is different from any other book of this
kind in existence. Its contents will positively
prove to any one who may be in fear of death and
the hereafter that there is no more need for such
fear than for a child to fear a boogi. The lan
guage used is so plain that a child can grasp the
full meaning of all that the author wishes to con
vey, and the arguments advanced are positively
ORIGINAL and so Clear that no thinking person
can fail to be convinced of the truth of the posi
tion taken by the author.
The book entitled “Religion a Curse! Why?”
contains a treatise on the following subjects:
Chapter L Is there in existence a conscious
supernatural personality or god who rules this
universe?
Chapter 11. Does man possess an immortal
soul, subject to eternal happiness or eternal tor
ture? -
• Chapter 111. Did- god create man or did man
create god?
Chapter IV. Is it true that Religion as preached
by any or all creeds is the great moral force or
agency for good that we are asked to believe it is?
Chapter V. General Review and a word by the
author. In this Chapter the author treats the
Racial and Women Suffrage questions from a most
progressive point of view and recommends a sub
stitute for present day religious teachings.
Chapter VI. A personal talk to the adherents
of the Jewish Religion, 12 pages.
Chapter VIT. A personal talk to all the Cath
olics the world over, 80 pages.
Chapter VIII. A personal talk to all Protestants
the world over, 11 pages.
In these talks the author proves to the mem
bers of eac’h Creed that the Religion they believe
in is not a godly institution nor their clergy the
god-ordained men they think they are.
If these subjects interest you—read this book—-
it will not disappoint you. Dear Reader, do not
permit your Clergyman to dictate to you what
you should or should not read. These gentlemen
are the very first to read these forbidden books.
If it is not a sin for them to read books of this
nature, why should it be a sin for you to read
them. Do your own thinking.
When you are through with this letter, pass it
to your friend or neighbor. Size of the book, 6x9
—250 pages. Price: Paper cover, 50c; cloth
bond, SI.OO. In clubs of 12 or more to one ad
dress, 45c and 90c.
Call or write. JULIUS KOENIG.
Now, Brethren, haven't I developed a state
of things that’s enough to make a colicky
mule hee-haw?
The Roman Catholic papers are lambasting
The Menace for refusing to publish an adver
tisement, without ever having taken the
trouble to find out what the advertisement
was. •
They just take it for granted that every
thing done by The Menace is wicked, and so
they rushed into a fusillade where they them
selves get shown up discreditably, and The
Menace comes out on top.
If you have read Mr Koenig’s letter to me
and his circular description of his book, you
will see that he is an atheistic Jew, who denies
the existence of a Supreme Being, and holds
all rel igions to be false, including, of course,
the Pope's hog-wash paganism.
What will the Roman Catholic papers say
now?
O what will they say ?
Here they have been abusing The Menace
for not advertising a book which abolishes
God, holds all religions to be a curse, and
says that, men have no souls.
When I read Koenig’s letter and circular,
I laughed until I cried.
To think of a simple Gentile, like your
Uncle T. E. W., entrapping an atheist Jew
and a dozen Romanist; wiggle-tails, in one
catch.
No, Mr. Koenig; you can’t get your ad. in
The Jeffersonian for all the money of the
Rothschilds.
I have printed what you sent me, in order
that the people might see what it was that
The Menace wouldn’t publish; but that’s an
end of it.
I have never made war on any man’s re
ligion. That’s his business, not mine.
It is only when a man uses his “religion”
as a pretext for grasping political power, gov
ernmental favors, and for attacking our liber
ties, that he and I clash.
So far as I am concerned, every Catholic
is free to use his religion, as a religion; but
when he turns it into a political machine; a
cheat-and-swindle machine, a foreign control
machine, a dungeon building machine, a
'slave-labor machine, a crime committing ma
chine, and a machine for the subversion of
our American laws and Government — then,
indeed, I am up in arms, and just as ready
for gun-play, as my red-headed English an
cestors were.
