looked upon by many people as one

MASS MEETING IN ATLANTA
Dear Sir: We held a mass meeting
last night on the north side of the
State Capitol, about 3,000 being
present. This mass meeting was
held to protect the laws of the State
against the disgraceful seige of Big
Money being handled in violation of
law to defeat Justice. We heard one
grand old apostle defend this great
State against a horde of mercenary
newspapers, lawyers, preachers, etc.,
who have never ceased to defame
our State and to defy our courts.
Our mass meeting was well behaved
and very attentive. It ended with a
hymn. We passed a resolution up
holding the courts of our great
State, and demanding her verdicts
be enforced the same for the rich as
for the poor.
It seemed to us last night that the
lawyers had sold the law and the
preachers had forgotten it. The at
torney’s oath requires them to up
hold the law, and I presume all
preachers are supposed to read the
laws of God. To the lawyers may I
ask, Who passed the death sentence
on this son of Father Abraham? To
the preachers may I ask, Who passed
the first death sentence on the face
of the earth? We pause for a re
ply. Gentlemen, this rape and mur
der stinks above the earth and cries
to God for vengeance, Who says
“Vengeance is Mine.”
This grand old brother, A. C.
Hendley, belongs to the greatest
brotherhood on earth and is a No. 1
Baptist minister, and he said: “I am
one preacher who cannot be bought.”
There were hundreds of cries for
Watson. Dorsey and Henley.

DID JUDGE CALL HAVE AU
THORITY TO ORDER THIS?
Dear Sir: As a subscriber to The
Jeffersonian, and a juror in the Fed
eral case of misappropriation of the
funds of the First National Bank of
Pensacola, Fla., I would like to have
your opinion as to the authority of
the Hon. Judge Call in having the
jurors to sign a verdict (or one of
them, as foreman of the jury,) of
not guilty in favor of the defend
ants, namely, Wm. H. Noles, Wm S.
Keyser, and Wm. K. Hyer, in the
above named case.
It is understood that the Court
has a right to noli prosse the case at
any stage of the case, but in this in
stance his honor called on us to sign
the verdict that read “We, the jury,
find the defendants not guilty as
charged, so say we all,” the said ver
dict being entirely contrary to the
law and evidence in the case, so far
as produced by the Government, to
the opinion of more than half of the
jury, and one of the jury stepping
forward and signing the verdict
without any consultation at all.
Please publish in The Jeffersonian
your opinion in the above,-' if you
have space, and there is nothing to
the contrary, and oblige.
I beg to remain, yours truly,
Fla. C. C. CHANCEY.
(Comment.)
The jorors should have demanded
the right to retire to their room, to
consider the evidence, and decide
what they would do. T. E. W.
