the Trial of Thos. E.
Watson.
our Forum column today we
print by request a clipping
from an Alabama ■weekly
newspaper relative to Thos.
or
E. Watson, editor and pro
prietor of The Jeffersonian, a period
ical that has devoted itself to assaults
on the Catholic Church and to argu
ments against Leo. M. Frank.
Watson has been on trial this week
charged with sending obscene matter
through the mails in violation of the
Federal law. The jury tailed to agree
and Watson was discharged. One of
the jurors in response to the court's
inquiry said that if the jury were to
consider the case thirty years they
would not reach an agreement.
These two things, the Alabama
publication and the jury’s flat dis
agreement, indicate Clearly that di
vision of sentiment on Watson in
Georgia ; s distinctly and severely
drawn. In other words there is no
•half way ground. He is either upheld
or condemned. This being the case
it would be extremely difficult to find
a jury or any set of men in Georgia
who would agree as to his guilt or
innocence.
Furthermore, to sustain a prosecu
tion such as that brought against
Watson is practically an impossiblity.
His attacks are against an institution,
and therefore they do not have the
personal quality which is apparently
essential for the maintenance of a
trial before jury. Members of the
jury have their convictions and ideas
and sentiments and these things all
necessarily weigh in the consideration
of such a case.
Watson has been before the courts
twice and each time he has escaped
conviction. We doubt if he ever will
be tried again on the offenses alleged

THE JEFFERSONIAN
It is highly probable, however, that
his activities in time to come will be
much less violent than in time gone
by. A man does not run into court
trials with his eyes wide open, even
if he knows such trials will result
favorably to him, and in the last trial
some of the jurors evidently were for
a verdict of guilty.
Watson unquestionably is a cour
ageous writer, a man who gives ut
terance to what he believes and is
ready to accept the consequences.

FIGHT CONCERN’S STATE AND
NATION.
Dear Sir: Though not a subscriber
to your paper, I have been a close
reader of same for several months,
and while I have for several years
been an admirer of you, it was only
after you began your magnificent
fight in the Frank case that I be
came an out and out Tom Watson
man.
How ever the fight tor which you
are now being persecuted is the one
in which I am most interested for it
concerns not only our beloved state
but the nation.
To me it appears alarming that the
people (or a part of them) will con
tinue to refuse to see the facts and
truths which have been so focibly
presented by you. However, I am
sure that the people are waking up
to their peril, and if you are spared,
long enough, you* will see your
mighty efforts crowned with success
and will go down in history as the
man who redeemed a nation.
I think there can be no more fit
ting time than now for your friends
and admirers to rally to your sup
port and express to you their con
fidence in and love for you.
I really think you will have no ser
ious trouble in your fight before the
court, but if you should be convicted,
I believe it would be a sad day for
your enemies. I do not believe the
county would stand icliy by and per
mit you to go down in defeat in any
such manner.
God bless you Air. Watson and
spare you and direct and crown your
efforts with success that as you have
redeemed Georgia, so may you re
deem America.
GEORGIAN.
