HOW TO FIGHT THE FOREIGN
POPERY, AND MAKE AMERICA,
AMERICAN!
Dear Sir: “That Catholic vote,”
of which so much has been heard
among politicians during the past
quarter’ century, has quite definitely
lost its potency in this region, and
no longer is heard from political
sycophants the boast, “we have ‘that
Catholic vote.’ ’-’ No longer do the
papal subjects hereabouts publicly
flaunt and hawk “that Catholic vote,”
which always seeks patronage and
never principle, so shamelessly and
brazenly before the now informed
and outraged voters.
Up to about two years back, when
the Knights of Columbus wished to
indorse a candidacy, they “induced”
that candidate to speak before that
order (by this means signifying to
“that Catholic vote” over the city
and country that candidate’s willing
ness to do Rome’s bidding when in
ducted into office), and then stirred
their publicity committee into super
activity in spreading the “news” by
means of the public* press, which as
a rule snatched it up as eagerly as
if it had been tidings from the planet
Mars and spread it before the gaping
public in screaming headlines ad
nauseam. The tooting of Gabriel’s
“tuba” would not have been accorded
more space or largei’ headlines than
this “dope” from the doughty
knights.
Referring to newspapers and al
leged newspapers, this city has an
extreme monstrocity in a sample of
the latter class. This thing has long
since ceased to be a newspaper, and
for some years past has been, and it
now is, the very grind-organ of the
half-handful of Knights of Columbus
here. It can truthfully claim to be,
and it is, the official organ of the
Roman Catholic diocese of Alabama,
a State in which the Roman Catholics
officially claim a total “population”
of just a little over one per cent.,
with half of these on the Alabama-
Gulf Coast and half of the remaining
half non-citizens, unable to speak or
read the English language. This
paper (not newspaper) circulates
(though very sparingly) in a terri
tory that is not one iota less than
90% per cent. Protestant, yet the
obsession of papalism has it with a
strong vice-like grip and its chief
owner and nominal editor, a man of
considerable intelligence and wealth,
has utterly abandoned this alleged
newspaper to a Knight of Columbus
who willingly and eagerly does
Rome’s every bidding, and under
whose censorship every word submit
ted to this publication, editorial or
repertorial, must fall. Thus North
Alabama beholds the spectacle of a
Roman Catholic daily paper circu
lated among a people unanimously
Protestant. Reference is had here to
the alleged news columns of The Bir
mingham Daily Age-Herald, for to
preach popery editorially to a Prot
estant people would be too plain a
perversion of the functions of even
this thing. By means of its news
columns, one Could stay in Vladi
vostock, Asiatic Russia, and know
every move made by the 137 Knights
of Columbus in this county of three
thousand population. Draw radio
cut of this city in every direction for
150 miles, close the circle, >and there
is the territory that ought to be serv
ed by this miserable sheet, yet in all
that vast region it has a paltry 19,000
subscribers —just half what The Bir
mingham News, a real newspaper, a
live and vigorous NEWSpaper, no
organ for anything or anybody, has—
and even The Birmingham Ledger,
another genuine NEWSpaper, owned
by gentlemen who are Catholics, has
one and one-half times The Age-
Herald’s subscription list. And The
Ledger is not an Associated Press
newspaper. The Atlanta Constitu
tion serves a region quite similar to
that of this Birmingham monstros
ity, and the two ought to have about
the same number of subscribers, but
The Constitution has more than two
and one-half times its Birmingham
contemporary’s list of subscribers.
THE JEFFERSONIAN
The Ledger, owned by Catholics, has
had sense enough to seek, and it has
gotten, a large section of Protestant
support, without which it would Col
lapse within thirty days, and no
Protestant in the State would wish
to deprive it of such legitimate busi
ness. Indeed, The Ledger has made
a special bid for the militant and
distinctly Protestant element, the
prohibitionists, and has met with de
cided success in that direction. Why,
The Observato Romano, the official
organ of the papacy in Rome itself,
is far less papal than is The Birming
ham (Ala.) Age-Herald. Spread the
news throughout the United States,
and let the ultra-montanes subscribe
for this Alabama sheet rather than
go to the city of Romales and Remees
for their mental pabulum.
Having set things in motion to
clean out the City Hall, the battle
cry now is, “On to the Courthouse;
clean out the county!”
The situation there is analyzed
thus: The Board of Revenue (Court
of County Commissioners) is com
posed of five members, who have con
trol of the disbursement of hundreds
of thousands of dollars during its
four-year term. Headed by the only
Roman Catholic member of the
board, the pro-papists joined him in
organizing the board for the purpose
of turning over the rich pickings of
this very wealthy and populous boun
ty to Catholics and pro-Catholic
gangsters. This triumvirate has
thrown out very nearly every (if not
every) major Protestant county em
ployee in its control, and these three
■would exhibit much mule sense by
resigning and leaving the county be
fore the primary -election next May.
They will shortly be made to know r ,
realize and feel the intensity of pub
lic wrath and indignation because of
their betrayal of their public trust.
They have for several months back
realized the desperate strait in which
they find themselves, and as to one
of them an extremely ludicrous situa
tion has developed. This fellow,
seeing public wrath about to descend
upon him, has very recently been
received into Masonry, and ever since
he has been as active in that capital
order as one c’ould well be. He’s a
Mason for revenue only, and his
activity therein has but intensified
the opposition to him. He cannot
hide his political misdeeds behind
the skirts of the grand old Masonic
order, for the very simple and defi
nite reason that we Masons and all
others have seen him, with our own
eyes, assist in turning over to the
Pope of Rome the public patronage
of the premier county of the great
State of Alabama —and that is
TREASON. The hounds of hell have
been loosed against him and his con
freres, and nothing short of the di
rect intervention of Providence itself
can save them from conviction on the
charge of political treason with the
people of Jefferson County, Ala., as
jury, whose verdict will certainly be:
“We, the people of Jefferson County,
find the three defendants guilty of
the highest and grossest TREASON,
as charged in this indictment, and
assess their just p unishment at
hanging by the neck until dead!
dead! dead! and may God have mercy
upon their souls.”
For many years past, this Prot
estant city and county, through the
agency of the Board of City Commis
sioners and the county Board of
Revenue, have annually appropriated
thousands of dollars to Rome’s pri
vate and sectarian institutions, the
titles to which are in the name of
the Roman Catholic bishop of Ala
bama, resident at Mobile, and which
institutions are exempt from taxation,
and this in the face of the fact that
the Constitution of the State express
ly forbids the giving of any public

Rome’s law has superceded the law
of the State and nation, and in case
of conflict, the former rules over the
later. On this point of papal assump
tion, ex-Con gressuran Thomas E.
Watson, the grandest character in
the whole Southland, "who for years,
before many were awake on the sub
ject, fought this battle of the Prot
estant South and the whole country,
and made many telling points, and
he is still making them, to the dis
comfiture of popery here 'and else
where.
This is the situation as to giving
public’ monies to Romish private, sec
tarian institutions: The people of
this almost unanimously Protestant
city and this nearly unanimously
Protestant county, through the agen
cies as above, are yearly appropriat
ing common tax money, paid by
Protestants almost exclusively, to
have their own dear children prose
lyted and perverted to popery and to
build up Vaticanism in many other
■ways. There is in this city a Roman
Catholic orphanage that is supported
to a very heavy extent by common
tax money paid by the people of
this city and county. The Protestant
orphanages and homes receive no
such funds, nor would they accept
them. The hamper-basketful of
Romanists in city and county often
make the boastful statement that
from 75 to 90 per cent, of the chil
dren in their local sectarian orphan
ages are of Protestant parentage, and
that is the extremely sad and ap
palling FACT in this case. They

for the institution is purely, solely
