centuries been, in riotous enjoyment of King
Richard’s bequests: each of them are as full
of pride, of avarice, and of lust as the Tem
plars, Cistercians, and Dominicans were in
Richard's day.
Why do these Pittsburgh observers demand
the outlawry of Henry Esmond. Thackeray's
great novel ?
Probably the reason is that Thackeray
painted in true colors that most contemptible
Romanist prince, Charles Stuart, the Pre
tender to the throne of England.
But the three Pittsburgh observers fall
upon another magnificent book. “The Cloister
and the Hearth." and these three smart men
say that the book was written Charles
Kingsley!
Here are three insolent American Romanists
demanding a censorship over the world's best
literature, and (hey. so densely ignorant that
they credit Charles Reade’s wonderful novel
to (he far inferior Charles Kingsley.
Why do these three self-appointed censors
demand that Catholic children be kept from
reading such books as are mentioned?
The reason is. that no Romanist can read
those books and remain the slave of the
Italian pope.
The sneak who was afraid to sign his name
to his insolent but silly communication in
The Observer, admits that he never read one
of Scott's hooks.
He's a nice fellow to judge them, isn't lie?
‘That's just the kind of narrow-minded fanatic
who furiously demands that nobody shall
read, or write, or listen, or eat. or drink, or
vote, except as HE does!
If "Observer," or the two editors of the
paper will tell us why a Romanist cannot read
Marmion, The Lady of the Lake, and The
Lay of the Last Minstrel, I hope they will
do it.
What was it in “Waverly" that disgusted
and stopped this “Observer?"
Why could lie not read ‘"Rob Roy,” “The
Talisman". “The Abbot.” “Woodstock,”
“Quentin Durward,” “Old Mortality, and The
Art iquarv ?”
“An Observer'' is such a bigoted and nar
row-headed ignoramus that he would banish
from (lie enjoyment of Catholic boys and
girls, youths and maidens, such pure, up
lifting, and entertaining works as Scott's
“Christmas in the Olden Time." “Lochinvar,”
“The Palmer.' 1 “The Return of the Crusader.”
“The Grey Friar,” “The Eve of St. John,”
and scores of others.

man —with perceptible leanings to “the old
religion*,” because it was the companion and
upholder of Kings and aristocracies; but
Scott was also a good man, and no human
being could read his Poems and Romances
without having his character and sentiments
elevated.
Tiie Actual Oath of Every
Roman Catholic Priest.
CAUR readers will remember Rev. P. A.
Seguin, ex-priest, who came to Georgia
two years ago, and sold the ‘"Eye Opener” in
Augusta, and elsewhere.
The “Eye Opener 1 ’ is the English transla
tion of the delicate and refined questions
which delicate and refined priests pour into
the delicate and refined ears of Roman Cath
olic ladies.
Because I published them, in Latin, the
Italian pope and his American gangs have
been hounding me four years.
But they did not dare to arrest Seguin,
when Seguin sold and mailed the same thing
in English-.
Sequin knows too much.
They fear him, just as they fear Bishop
Manuel Ferrando, of New York, who also
left the Roman fold because of the wolves.
In a recent letter to me. Rev. Seguin says:
Last December we won the lawsuit at Litchfield,
Minnesota, in regard to that oath.
Particulars can be given by F. A. Jordan, 250
Security Building, Minneapolis, Minnesota, who
was arrested by the holy machine in regard to
that priests’ oath which they deny as they deny
everything—except the “Eye Opener.’’
P. A. SEGUIN.
The, oath to which he refers reads as
follows:
Priest’s Oath.
“I, Peter Alphonsus Seguin, now in the pres
ence of Almighty God, the blessed Virgin Mary,
the blessed Michael the Archangel, the blessed
St. John the Baptist, the Holy Apostles, St. Peter
and St. Paul, and the Saints and Sacred Hosts of
Heaven and to you my Lord, I do declare from
my heart, without mental reservation that the
pope is Christ’s vicar-general and is the true and
only head of the universal church throughout the
earth, and that by virtue of the keys of binding
and loosing give his holiness by Jesus Christ, he
has power to dispose of heretical kings, princes,
states, commonwealths and governments, all Ire
ing illegal without his sacred confirmation, and
that they may safely be destroyed. Therefore, to
the utmost of my I will defend this doc
trine and his holiness’ rights, and custom against
all usurpers of the Protestant authority whatso
ever, especially against the now pretended author-
stamina enough to stand by his con
victions where a life hung in the
balance, even though he knew he
would on leaving the court-room
walk into a thousand bayonets.
I do not think the Northern news
papers represented the sentiment of
the Northern people in this case.
Allow me to congratulate you for
your success in defeating the purpose
of the Roman Catholic machine in
their last attempt at legal burlesque.
This letter is intended only to re
mind you that you have friends
whom you know nothing about, and
does not carry any obligation to you
for a reply. There is none expected.

“In testimony whereof, I take the most holy
and blessed sacrament of the Eucharist and wit
ness the same holy bishop and all the priests who
assist him in my ordination to the priesthood.”

phonsus Seguin who swore to the oath printed on
the back hereof at the City of Stevens Point,
Portage County, Wis., the 2 sth day of October,

Rev. P. A. Seguin swears that he took that
oath, and that it is the oath all priests have
to take.
He was haled into court on this very prop
osition, and he won out on it.
Yet, our blind, or cowardly Congressmen
are filling the Navy and the Army with papal
officers who are hound by that infernal oath.
