PUBLISHED DAILY BY COSAW EMIR BAKTLET. PROSPECTUS. THE SAVANNAH MUSEUM; Published in Savannah, Ga. COSAM EMIR BARTLET, Editor. A FREE PRESS has been termed the Pal ladium of Liberty; and since its first establish ment, it has been cherished by the People, as the firmand stedtast champion of their rights.— Experience, so far from chilling the enthusiasm ■with which it has been regarded, has only con firmed it in the affections of the people. It has been proved to be a most powerful engine in the correction of those abuses of authority, and those faults in the administration of Government, which the Laws neglect, or cannot reach. In a free Government like ours, there are many such. The Institutions of our country are not based on adamant, but are founded on opinion. Opin ion, which is mutable in itself-—is one thing in this day, or age —may be another, the next. — What then but an enlioXtknld press can give stability to our ♦nns of government, by des seminating correct and liberal notions in poli tics, and by inculcating sound maxims, and vir tuous principles. Our Government professes to derive its power from the suffrages of the peo ple. The Press is therefore of vital importance to the people; because it is a veliicle through’ which they can make their voice be heard, un d respected, through every department of pow- i er. . 1 The Press may sometimes be faulty—may b influenced by political combinations, or grot licentious. But these are evils which specdil worktheir own cure. A licentious I'ress can not long be patronized by a sober and discrim inating public ; and one that becomes corrupt from the influence of power, and betrays tin interests of .the people, will be neglected lit the’ people. And thus self-interest, the only vice which could have induced an Editor to tie part from his duty, will compel him to reform, The principles of the present Editob of the Mcseum, must necessarily have become known, to a large portion of the community, by his for mer editorial labors. Hts views of men and tnea-1 sures have been explained to the public, by practical comment. And it is tnougiit that Ins past course will b-. at* him out in die assertion, that his main objeci lias always beta, to pub lish an LN DEPEND E.Yf, HONEST; and IM PARTIAL PAPER, which shou.d serve the in terests of the great body of the peoi-le, without flattering the vanity, cringing for tile favor, or disguising the vices, of any particular class of them. However mistaken lie rtiuy have oeen in the means made use of to accomplish tins great object—yet he can truly say, that he has been devoted to it, with an honesty of inten tion, and singleness of heart, which has disdain ed all consideration* of pecuniar, advantage, or personal feeling. \\ here his path ot duly has been Clearly marked out, .it hefiiies h- has endeavored to follow it, regardless of conse quences. He believes that no selfish feelings, ho view's of individual protit, honor or emolu ment, have had power to force him from a stand, which the interests of tile people and die non or of his country have called upon him to as sume, Where his duty has been plain, he has endeavored that his conduct should be fearless and determined. He has not hesitated to de nounce political profligacy, though c.oUied with authority ; he lias advanced boidiv to the charge, ami attached the enemies, of economy , of jus 'tice, of liberty, and tne people, in the strung howls of ihcir power. I bis he nus not done to gratify any angry loelings of ms own, but be cause he deemed tne public good demanded it. In particular, it will be die wish of the Edi tor to keep tire Museum aloof from all party ‘ entanglements. In his editorial character, ite will Know no party, but the American people; and will acknowledge no leaders out the Spirit of Justice, and Ins own conscience. 11l the fate ■of Other establishments, he has learned die des tiny which must always await tile Editor, who sutlers Himself to be made the Loot 01 a pa, ty. lie is thrust forth as the “Cut’s paw’’ in all quarrels; pushed tot-ward as principal in con troversies, where iie nas no interest, and can gain no honor ; and must bear tile odium of sins which are not his own. If the designs of the party succeed, lie is neglected, because his ser vices are no longer useful. If the si mstor de signs of the party are detected and lad—the printer, who was only an instrument in the hands of more cunning men—who only became odious from assuming other people’s actions—is sacri ficed to a selfish policy'; he is made the scape goat, and sent forth into tne wilderness with tile sins of the whole party on his head.— Yarned, therefore, by the example of others, the Editor of tne Museum will lend himself to the views of no party. lie will advocate the interests of THE PEOPLE, and trusts to them alone for patronage. In the competition between citizens for posts of honor and prom, the influence of the Muse um shall always be exerted on the side of vir tue and talents. The spirit of our government denies a prescriptive rig-ht in any person to of fice. Honors and offices are not die property -of any family or party —but are the iiike lift of the people; and should be bestowed upon - those whose virtues have rendered them illus t ious. They should be bestowed as a reward Lr eminent services rendered the country —and nut held out as bribes for political duplicity. - Such have been the views and principles which have governed the Editor ot the Museum in Lis past course, and which he modestly hopes v. ill continue to guide him for the future. In soliciting an increase of patronage, which may lender tiio Museum more extensively useful, the -Editor trusts that the principles lie lias support ed, are such as will advance Hie best interests of his country, and which the enlightened ci tizens of Georgia cannot but approve. VV ith these impressions, and these hopes, this PROS PEC PUS is submitted to a liberal public. TKkMS OF SUBSCHJFTIOX.
