Another lievolutionary Patriot Gone! —
Jobs M’Klnstry, aged 80, died in the town
ol Livingston of New-York, on Sunday last.
At the first call of his country, (says the
Hudson Whig) he engaged in her sei vice;
und from the “memorable battle of Bunker'*
Hill, with which her sanguinary trials be
gan, down to the surrtuder of Cornwallis
at Yo.ktown, wito which they gloriously
elided, Ins zealous and efficient support
was given to the cause of freedom, lie had
been repeatedly and severely wounded—
and some of the enemy ’s balls he has borne
with him to the tomb in which his remains
are deposited. Asa partisan officer ho was
particularly distinguished; and in many in
stances lie’showed, that to a daring spirit
of gallantry, (which was perhaps, his most
peculiar characterustic) he added the skill
and conduct so Seldom attained; and yet so
lodispeusabie to the formation of that char
acter.
Oqe incident, in the life of this veteran,
is too remarkable to be passed slightly over.
At the battle of the Cedars, (30 miles above
Montreal, on the St. Lawrence,) Colonel
M’K.instry, then a capt. in col. Paterson's
regiment of continental troops was twice
wounded and taken prisoner by the Indians.
The intrepidity of capt. M'Kinstry, a* a
partisan officer’ to which we have alluded
above, had rendered him alike the object
of their fears, and of their unforgiving re
sentment. The British officers were too
much in dread of their savage allies, on ac
count of their vast superiority of numbers,
to risk an interposition of their authority
to prevent the horrid sacrifice they saw
preparing. Already had the victim been
bound to the tree, and surrounded by the
faggots intended for his immolation—hope
had fled—and in the agony nt despair lie
had uttered that mystic appeal which the
brotherhood of masons never disregaul—
when, as if Heaven had interposed for his
preservation, the warrior Brandt under
stood him and saved him.
Brandt had been educated in Europe—
and had there been initiated into the mys
teries ofrfiee-tnnsomy. The advantages
of education and his native strength of
mind, gave him an ascendancy over the
uncultivated sons of the forest, that few
other chiefs possessed. Situated as he was,
the impending danger of a brother, must
have forcibly brought in mind his obligation
to support him in the time of peril. His
utmost endeavors were accordingly used,
and they were happily successful, in ob
taininjt fur him an Immediate respite, and
au eventual ransom.
After the settlement of peace, he retired
to the cultivation., of his farm in the vicini
tv of this city, sustaining an unblemished
reputation, and enjoying the reward of his
toils and sufferings,Tn the respect which
was accorded, *as well to the rectitude of
his private life, as to the patriotic services
he had rendered to his country.
His Remains were yesterday consigned
to the tomb; and it is needless to say that
an immense concourse of people.were pre
sent to pay the last sad duties to one so
honored and esteemed.
His funeral obsequies were conducted by
the Hudson Lodge; and there was a pecul
iar fitness —an impressive solemnity—in
performing the masonic rites of sepulture
fora brother whose connexion with the or
der had once saved him from an untimely
death—bad given him back as an ornament
to society for more than forty years—and
afforded a proof undeniable of the excellen
cy of the institution.

Were it possible for tlie mind to seize
at a stogie view, tiie occupations of all the
inhabitants of the globe, it would be some
what curious to behold the numbers that,’
at any given point of time, are busily anti j
sid.dy employed in raising their animal j
spirits to the agreeable point of elevation,!
and to compare the various artifices adopt
ed for this purpose. Os the 8 hundred j
millions, the computed number of the
I whole, we ifiould have so many smoking,
so many carousing, so many millions or
thousands throwing off drams, so many
sipping coffee^so many masticating opium,
and other exhilarating extracts, so many
dancing, singing, hunting, or gambling, all
to keep off the tedium vitae. Some must
have mimic scenes of bloodshed on the
stage ; some must see men killing one an
other in earnest; for others a mortal cock
fight is a sufficient stimulant, koine keep
the vapours at bay by talking politics, oth
ers by. talking scandal, millions by talking
to themselves. Some droop if the world
neglects to praise them, and of these, some
prefer a full draught of adulation, at sta
ted intervals, while others, among whom
are authors, actors, crowned heads, and
handsome ladies, must be tippling it from
mortrin£ till night. Some take to the ex
citement of hot suppers ; others to ghost
stories ; others to authentic accounts of
earthquakes, murders and conflagrations.
But it were endless to proceed ; tntmey-ma
king, money-spending ; fanatical devotion ;
auto-da-fes ; Indian torturing of prison
ers ;sight-see’ing; last new novels; in a
word, many of meo's occupations, and
most of their amusements —what are they
but the several ways of attaining the same
end ; and happy they who so regulate their
passions, as to require no other stimulant
than a few diurnal sneezes to keep their
minds in good humor with the world
and themselves.
From the Commercial Advertiser.
The German Correspondent, June 13,
• 1822.—Within the past season, our stock
of German Publications and literary intel
ligence has greatly increased. In the pi e
’ sent number of the German Cort’espondent
which we hope will soon be tallowed by an
other, we shall furnish a few items.
A learned Physician writes from Germa
ny, that through the instrumentality of| (he
fate Dr. Albers, of Brerne n, the most im
portant medical publications of the United
states, had been made known in Ger
many, and that the medical literature of
America had excited general attention.—
In consequence of the death of Dr. Albers,
gome of his correspondents haved cease
sending their publications to Geimauy,
am! the complaint is made that though
some of the friends of Dr. Albors had been
written to, they had never answered any
application. The above mentioned Physi
cian therefore laments that lie should be un
able to meet with the reciprocity of Amer
ican Physicians, more especially as he pur
poses to publish in Germany a periodical 1
work to be entitled American Medical
Archives, in which reviews of the latest and
most important works sent from the Uni
ted Slates, will be presented. Should
tiiis article meet the eye of any gentlemen
who have it in then- power to encourage
laudable undertaking) they will receive
further information on this subject, by ap
plying at this office for the address of the
German Correspondent.
SIMPLICITY OF MANNERS.
I cannot help preserving here a letter
written from Switzerland, which lam as
sured is genuine. Indeed there is no oc
casion for any very strenuous assurances
on fins subject; there is a simplicity, a
naivete, a turn in the letter, which could
not bo invented. In favour of these you
must excuse one term used, which is not
suited to polite cars, but which could not
be changed, without injuring the simplicity
of the style.
Letter from a Woman to her Husband,
a Soldier in the Regiment of Lochmann.
“ My dear heart, I cannot refrain fi cm
giving you the information that i am,
thank God, well and hearty. I shall be
very happy to learn the same news of thee,
I hope all goes well with thee; every toi-.ig
goes on well in this house, except that thy
brothers vex and tease me ; therefore l
wish you to get leave of absence from your
captain ami come home. Thy brothers
have wicked tongues, and treat me neither
more nor less than as if I were a w .
In hopes of seeing thee soon, I am thy
faithful.
“ANNE MARGARET,
“ P. S. I ought to tell you, but 1 hardly
dare, though I hope it won’t vex you much,
rhat I got.a little too near our neighbor
George, and by that means I am with child.
—I shall certainly take as much care of
the child as if it were your own ; make
haste and come, that you may be here by
the christening, and make me an honest
woman You may do this very well, and
am I not always your dear Margare* ?
besides, you know that if you had been at
home this would never have happened.”
Among other tales of the high life which
appear in the fashionable English periodi
cals, we were struck with the following:
American.
I Love. Tokens— The giving or receiving
of hair, as a token of love or of remem
brance., has been considered dangerous
nay fatal, to the duration of an attachment.
Never was the justice of this objection ren-j
dered more manifest, never more strongly!
exemplified, than by a late ‘marriage in high
life.’ The now Countess of B* was ‘the
relict of the late E. T. D . Esq’and in
one little month, or ere those shoes were
old,’ apd.so forth, we find her once more 1 a
| young and blooming bride.’ The countess
i was remarkable fora beautiful head of hair
| —(teas we say, for it has not had time to
;be renewed.) On the decease of her late
i beloved husband, she approached the coffin
in which his remains were about to bit in-:
closed—seized apair of scissors,& (oh 1 hea-1
vy tale !) cutoff) atone fell swoop,’ those [
teauteoug linglets,• which (as she patheti
cally exclaimed upon the occasion) hg had
loved so much while living, and which he
should bear with him to the grave,’ suiting
the action to the word, she cried with
GeßtrUde, * sweets to the sweet,’ strewed
them on his corse, and was bqrne away in
animate. Peace to his manes !
