THE ELECTION OF SPEAKER
Tub Baltimore American. in a notice
of the eiection of Sjieaker, remarks
.“The fact that Messrs. Evans and

Jruly national views, and the -re usal of
jibe Democrats to assist in his election,
when they have now abundant strength
jlo accomplish it, must throw on thetp
the responsibility of any sectional result

Jffr. Richardson is nominated forbids all
aid in his election from other parlies ;
hence if the Democracy wish to e-cape

Republicans they must go to the nid of
those who are willing to yield their parly
predilections for the national good.”

TEMPERANCE CRUSADER.
Ql'OXUAM TEMCKBANCK BANXER.
CTUATED by a conscientious t.csire to
further the cause of temperance, ant*, ex
periencing great disadvantage in being too
narrowly limited in space, by the smallness
of our paper, for the publication of Reform
Arguments and Passionate Appeals, we have
determined to enlarge it to a m re convenient
and acceptable size. And being c nscious of
the fact that there are existing in the minds
of a large portion of the presort readers of
thc Banner arid its former patrons, prejudices
and difficulties which can never be removed
loogas it retains the n >ine, we venture also
to make a chmige in t.-at. particular. It will
henceforth be called, “THE TEMPERANCE
CRUSADER.”
This old pioneer of the Temperance cau-e
is destined yet to chronicle the triumph of its
principles. It has st.,od ihe test—passed
through the "fiery furnace.” and. like the- “ lie
brew childreu.” re-appeared nnscorcbed It
has sutvived the nnc^papt rfamine which lias
caused, and is still causing many cxccllefj
journals and periodicals to sink, like “bright
exhalations in the evening,’* to rise no more,
and it has even heralded the “ death struggles
of many contemporaries. laboring ♦ rthc same
great end with itself. It *• ^tiil .b»es,” and

We entreat the friends of the Temperance
Cause to give us their influence in cxteudii g
the usefulness of the paper. We intend pres
