Thursday last, of disease ot the heart. He
had gone out from his hotel after night,
and was suddenly attacked, and died up
on the streets of tho city.
The body of the deceased reached the
city by special train on Sunday morning,
and the remains were conveyed to Oco
nee cemetary, accompanied by a very
large procession ot our people, and were
consigned to the tomb beside the ashes of
other distinguished and honorable mem
bers ot that family, who have been buried

Mr. Hull was for many years a citizen of
our town, and a sou of Hon. Asbury Hull,
whoso name and good deeds, and whose
many Christian graces and virtues were
so well known throughout this section of
the State.
Hon. Wm. Hope Hull was looked upon
iis one of the ablest and most learned
members of the bar ol Georgia, and had
held many offices of distinction, with hon
or and credit iu the past.
Mr. Hull, since the war, had resided in
Augusta. The Chronicle speaks of him as
follows :
“ Mr. Hull possessed in a high degree
all the qualities that go to make up a
man. His private life was without spot or
blemish. Though the possessor of great
dents, and a great reputation, he was
singularly modest an unassuming. - He eu
tertained decided convictions which
never hesitated to express, but lpffiad
spark of partisanship. He whs loyal:
iiis friendships, plucihlu in his enmftiei

circle of friends as wide almost jbjusac-

an irreparable loss.”

The Northeastern Railroad.]
We had occasion last week to travel
over the line ot this road, and were pleas
ed to notice that it is now doing a large
business in the transportation of freights,
and is well patronized by the traveling
public.
“ Billy” Hodgson, who is “ maid of all
work,” being conductor, mail ageut aud
express messenger, is thoroughly compe
tent, and discharges his various duties
ith fidelity.
Mr. E. G. Potter, who was acting as con
ductor on our return, is also ;i polite,
courteous gentleman, efficient iu the dis
charge of his duties. He informed us
that the road has made arrangements .‘or
the purchase of another engine and addi
tional cars, and will shortly commence
unning two trains a day. We are pleased
to learn this fact, as we are satisfied it
will prove to the interest of the road and
the convenience ot our citizens and the
public generally to do so.
Good Advice from a Farmer.
The following conversation took place
between one of our mcrehauts aud a coun
try triend, not a great while since. As it
is so poiuted, and conveys such a lesson,
we publish it for the beuefit ot those who
act on the plau of our friend S., trying to
carry on a successful business, without in
forming his friends and the public of the
fiict, through the columns of our paper :
“ Good morning, John, when did you
come in!”
“ Yesterday afternoon.”
“ Did you bring any load!”
“ Yes ; I brought cotton.”
“ Have you sold F
“ Yes ; I sold to T.”
“ Well, you wish to make some purchases
Indore you leave. Won’t you walk in and
lot me show you something t”
“ No, William, I have already bought
such thiugs as I need.”
“ What, John, sold your cotton, and
bought your supplies, without calliug on
me, and we such old friends, too 1 I am
surprised at you, Johu, aud feel considera
bly hurt, too. T felu coufident that when
you came to town you would give me
the first chance to buy your cotton, and
to sell you goods for old acquaintance sake, if
for no other. I know that I pay as much
for cotton as any one else, and can give
as good bargaiujs in goods. What is the
reason you tlid not call on inc a;ul give
n« a chance!”
Well, really, William, I did not know
sitiveiy that you were in business, or
It am were buying cotton, or that you
pit suclfartieles as I needed. You know
bus been a long time since I was in
town. I take the Watchman, aud never
seeing an advertisement of your business
in it, 1 did not know but that you had
quit merchandising, aud gone into some
other business. I saw Mr. 'Fs advertise
ment, stating that be was buying eottou,
mil kept just what I wanted ; and, as I
always try to patronize those who patrou-
ize their home institutions, feeling that
those who “ let their light shine,” are al
ways reliable, I drove right to his store,
sold him my eottou and purchased my sup
plies, without hunting any ono else. 1
can tell you, William, you lose a good deal
of custom by not advertising. Several ot
our old friends have been to town lately,
and made pretty heavy purchases at Mr.
T’s store. I have inquired of several of
them what you were doing, and none of
them could tell me any thing. I know
that they, as well as myself, would have
preferred trading with you, if wo had
known where to liuu you. They all take
the Watchman, and 1 am sure, if you will
advertise in that paper, as Mr. T. does,
that you will, in the luture, receive enough
custom from them to more than pay for
your advertisement.
