If tha “ Republic of America” is a thing of
tbe post, with its Government a corpse, as I
believe, then it may be claimed that all officers
at present serving under the "Stars and
8lripes,” unless they renew their old oaths of al
legiance under a different form, do so not from
doty but their own free pleasure. They are
de facto free to give their swords to whatever
government they choose, and art surely not
tc be blamed if they aooept service under that
of the land which gave them birth, and has
furnished them a home through life.
It is not far me, sir, to sound tbe praises of
my own parent, but this much 1 feel bound to
•ay—that during a career of forty fire years
ia the Amerioan navy, my "traitor” father has
never once swerved from hia duty to the Gov
ernment. He served the national "gridiron”
faithfully and well as a Yankee volunteer at
the, to us, disastrous battle of ” Blsdensburg,”
in tbe last wsr with Great Britain, and also in
the Algerine wsr nnder Commodore Decatur.
While a Lieutenant stationed in the West In

ho received a public expression of approbation
from his government, and a service of plate
from tbe merchants of Baltimore. More re
cently, as commander of the "Mosquito fleet”
of steamers during the Mexican war, he was
present at, and participated in, the bombard
ment of tbe castle of "San Juan de Ulloa,” was
there badly wounded in the arm, was men
tioned most honorably by Commodore Perry,
for his conduct on several occasions, in his
official dispatches, and received a still more
gratifying acknowledgment of tbe same in
ibe shape of a sword preRsnted him by his na

Where Britain Buy a her Grain*
A reoent city article in the London ’Timex,’
speaking of the countries wheucc Great Bri
tain draws her supplies of breadstuff's, says :
" The sources of our supply of wheat dur
ing tbe present year presents remarkable
changes from those of 1869 and 1858, owing
to the splendid harvest in Russia and Ameri
ca. In 1858 Prussia took the lead, and Rus
sia is now largely at the head of the list, sod
Prussia and tha United States follow. Last
year there was seorcely aay importation from
tbs latter country, but wo havo now drawn
from her more than one fifth of our toted re
ceipts, while Prussia has contributed exactly
the same quantity. The Russian arrivals
have constituted nearly one forth of our en
tire imports. Although Prussia is no longer at
the top, her capacity steadily increases, and
her change of ploeo ia owing merely to the
much more rapid advance of Russia. Tbs
United States supplies are at present likewise
increasing month by month, with the great
quickness and the retarn for Deoember, which
will complete the year, will probably put
ifaaft ceuntry above Prussia, whose plaoe will
then be third. Fraace this year exhibits a
great falling off, but we have still taken from
that country much mora than might have been
expected from the general aocounts of the
Frenoh harvest. Among the minor sources
Egypt presents the principal falling off.”
