Sketch of Victor Eaanual.
The following aketch of the King of Sardi
nia, from the pen of Alexander Dumas, appears
in the Independence of Naples:
“ Viotor Emanuel, who looks like a man of
forty years of age, is frank, sincere, vigorous,
temperate, an early riser, and a keen sports
man with gun and dog. lie bears the fatigues
of a long day’s shooting tetter than mnny
of the most active mountaineers, and he gen
erally starts on sueb ezeursioos before sun
rise. He makes a very light breakfast, met
ly a piece of bread aud a slice of cold meat or
cheese, whioh he eats like a peasant, without
sitting at table ; bu'. he always makes a hear
ty dinner, laying aside all enqueue, without
court or cbanibvrUias. On Sunday, the day
of general receptions at the palace, the doors
ore thrown open at eleven o'clock, and any
body who feels disposed may enter till three.
If any person desires a private audience he
must apply by letter, and on the morrow or
following day he will surely obtain it, for Vic
tor Emanuel opens all bit letters hiiuself. One
day, when out shooting, be uiet a peasant,
who, on seeing the king bring down two pnr-
tridges, right and left, with Ins double barrel
ed gun, went up to him and said, 'You shoot
well, you do.’ 'It was not a miss, was it ?’
responded the king. ‘Perhaps you could rid
me of a fox that steals my hens.’ ‘Musi will
ingly.’ ‘If you do, I will give you two muite,’
(seventy ceuts.) ‘Agreed.’ said the king ; *1
will come to morrow morning with my dog,
and shoot your fox.’ ‘Give me your hand on
it,' said the man. The king immediately
shook bands with him, and, true to his word,
went the next morning, found the fox, and
shot it. ‘Thank God for that!’ exclaimed the
peasant; ‘you have fairly tamed your two
mutte, and there they are.' The king look
them, and said, ‘This is the first money l have
ever earned.’ Then, tosting up ihe pieces in
hi nd, he added. ‘It is a pleasure to receive
money one has fairly gained.' The next day,
ia exchange for the two mutte, his mojesiy
rent a dress, necklace, and ear-rings for the
peasant’s wife. U *• impossible to be more
easy of access than is Victor Einanuel. He
goes out alone on foot, and enters the theatre
at the publie door. One day the porteress of
the Angennes Theatre caught a gemlemau in
the act of puffing the smoke of bis cigar at her
cat, which be had found iu a corner aud kept
there. Rushing forward to rescue her favor
ite, she seized the torroenter by the arm, aud
on his turning round, rccoguizcd the king.”
A Hero.
Miss I'ardoe, in a recent woik, relates the
following interesting anecdote :
At the bailie of Montmirail, a young officer,
named Durosier, chanced to be in attendance
on the Emperor at the moment when it become
necessary to despatch an order to one of Ihe
Generals of Division ; and Napoleon, hastily
eommotiing him to his side, gave him instruc
tions to deliver it without delay.
“ Spare neither yourself nor horse, sir,” he
said, sternly, “for there is not a moment to
loose ; and return at once, to report to me
that my order has been obeyed.”
Durosier galloped off ztuid a shower of shot
aud shells, and within a quarter of an hour he
was again beside the Empercr. His duty was
performed.
“ You have behaved well monsieur,” said
Napoleon, when he had received bis report ;
“you have a stout heart and a clear head,
tLough you are still a youngster. I give you
a captain’s brevet, and attach you to my per
son. What’s your name?”
“ Durosier, sire.’*
“ It seems familier fo me. On what occa
sion have I before beard it ?”
“ I was the colonel of the boy battalion,
your majesty.”
“Ah, I remember. Well, that is ao addi
tional reason why I should attach you to my
person.”
“ It is too late, sire,” murmured the young
soldier.
“ Too late, Captain Durosier, and why !”
“ Sire, they have hit meand as be spoko
he withdrew a handkerohuf saturated with
blood, from the breast of his coat. “ All will
soon be over— vice V Empertur! Vive l*
France !”
He reeled for an instant in bis saddle, aud
then fell heavily into the arms of an officer
who sprung forward to support him. Tiroo-
Icon was a corpse.
“ So young ! so young! and so brave ! and
to die ou his first battle field!” exclaimed the
Emperor, as he bent duwn for ao instant, over
the body. “ Poor bo? ! poor boy !”
Then setting spurs to his horse, ho galloped
off, as if unable to linger over so sad a spec
tacle.
