from the other inhabitants of the oceatq is
Ids extreme voracity, exemplified by bein'*

animal substance that may fall overboard.

’ An extraordinary story told hy Captain
Wallace, of a lover and his mistress, who
iVere snyed in a singular manner from the*
jaws of a shark. A transport, with part of|
a regiment on board, was sailing with a gen- j
tie firm z * along the coast of one ;
“l ijjy officers was leaning over the poop
?aiiing v coaversing with a young lady who
had inspired him with the tender passion;
the :4;r ope \\ijs in her cabin, and in the j
act of handing q paper to iier lover, when
overreaching herself, she fell into the sea,
and supported by her clothes, drifted astern;
the officer lost no unto jti pjun jing in .affer :
her, upheld Sic; with one qrm. The sails |
were quickly backed, the ship lay too, and
preparations were making to a boat:
when to the dismay of all on hoard, a large !
fchark appeared horn under ihp keel of tne
vessel, and glided towards his victims: a
shout of terror trom the agonised specia*
tors called the attention of tlie officer to the
approaching dagger ; lie saw ihe monsters
fearful length nearing him, he made a des
perate effort, plunged and splashed iha wa
ter so as u> frighten the sliaik, who turned
qi4 dived away out of sight; the current
had now carried the officer and the ladv
close lo the vessel, when the shark appear
ed a second time alongside, an J was in the
act of turning on his back to seize one of
the hapless pair, when a private of the of
ficers company, who'was standing in the
hummock-nettings, jumped fearlessly over
board with a beyonet in his hand, which he
plunged into tlie hack of the shark, which
instantly disappearing the three were Quick
ly released from their perilous situation.
The bay or ha. bcr of Kinsale in the south
of Ireland, is well known to be one of the
finest in that country; the entrance is guar
ded by two forts, one of which is now in
ruins. There is always the depot of a re
giment stationed at Kinsale, and according
io the custom of the service, in fine wea
ther, the men are marched daily to the
beach, under an officer, to bathe. It hap
pened not long ago, that a party of the 49th
were engaged i'll performing their ablutions,
when two of the privates undertook, for a
trifling wager, to swim across the mouth of
the ha imf from one fort tq the other; they
stretched across vigorously, and had got
about half way over, when a large black
looking fish was observed from the beach
to raise its bead out of the water at some
distance behind them, when the officer in
I command booming anxious for the safety
|of the men, and not wishing to alarm them
| by calling dqf, caused the bugler to sound
for them to return; they accordingly obey
ed, and turned towards the shore they had
left; they had no sooner done so, than the
fish again made is appearance close to
them, and making a rush at the nearest
man, carried hjm under water; the other,
seeing the fate ot bis companion, became
almost petrified with fright, gave way to his
terror, and was sinking, when the encour
aging voice of the officer called out, ‘Meyer
mmd my lad, strike out, nothing will barm
you:’ he accordingly everted himself, and
swam buldly towards the shore. The man
who had been carried down, now appeared
pufliipg and blowing the water from his
mouth, and apparently much confused,
when the officer cheered him, crying out,
‘Don't be afraid, lad, youV all sale now,
<any on.’ The man accordingly rebuking
t ht3 bead, and looking \?ilaiy nt uanrl I *;?•,
j recovered himself, and pushed for tho
shore; again the fish appeared, made a dart
at him, and carried him under, and did. ;his ;
atsw a third fiinc; afier cacli time lire man j
appeared on tho suiiuce, and always nearer |
the beach than vylien he disappeared? the!
I last liuie he rose so near his party that the |
! officer ordered the men to provide them- !
selves with stones, and when the fish again
showed himself hy was assailed by u volley
and was thereby completely scared from
his prey, and the nnn landed in safety
amidst the cheers of iiis companions. Af
ter he* had composed himself a liuie, to the
inquiries—‘/f ho was all righ V and ‘wh it
the devd hud got hold of him?’ he replied,

with me tarnation sass, aitd my back kept
rubbing against his belly, non I’m shot if it
wasn’t as soft as velvet.* W ith the excep
tion of ;be red mark around his jeg, lie was
unharmed, and conjecture was at a 'fand
stid as to the culture of the fish which hui?
seized him; for if it had been a shark or a
fish with teeth, it would have either taken
off his leg, or wounded him severely. In
the evening several boats went out to kill
tills strange animal, lie was Lequeniiy seen
many shots fired at him, but he could
not be secured, However, a few days af
terwards, a small bottle nosed whale ('balae*
tni tostra) was cast ashore in (he cove of
Coik.in whose body were several bullets,
\ynich had probably occasioned its oeath,
and it vvus therefore supposed to have been
the same fish that hid attacked the suldiei;
to which it was pet haps driven by extreme
hunger, as its ordinary food v? cattle fish,
and ns month and throat being small are
incapable oi taking in large bodies.
In voyaging in the Arabian Sea, it chanc
ed that the vessel in which f sailed was
becalmed for some days, and tiic cre w were
in ilia of jumping overboard and swim
ming round the ship. One day, whilst se
veral of (ho Lauds were amusing themselves
in this way, a large shaik appeared astern;
the men were immediately piped on board,
and they ail obeyed except a fool-hardy
follow of a boatswain's mate, who said, ‘the
shark bed ——-d, f’m not afraid of him.*
In the mean time a hook properly baited
was lowered from the poop, by which the
shark was hauled on board. As soon, as it
was out of the water, the remora or sucking !
fish, wlticit is always found adhering under
the fins of shirks, disengaged itself, and
swam towards the boatswain’s mate, and
fastened on his lusty hack. The fellow j
hollo, wed as if the devil had got hold of him; |
sung out to one of his messmates, ‘D
my eyes, Bill, ifie shark is holding on by
my 6tarn; bear a band, and heave us a
rope; Lord I would giyo a mouth’s grog
to be aboufd* Wiui the blazes are you
about, Bib? Bear a lidpd, will you, you
lubber.’ Master Billy, however* and the
other jacks, were in no haste to relieve their
messmate; they enjoyed the lark amaaitig*
ly and provoked him by singing out, ‘I say,
can’t you behave like a sodgor afore I Ire
enemy, eh? don’t be taken aback, Jack?
kick at him boy, and free your ztar/i!”~-
Jack kicked, and plunged, and roared at
being thus boarded abaft, but to no pur
pose; the sucking fish field on, and at last
the crew, tired of the joke, hauled the ter
rified boatswain’s mate on board, not how
ever, before letting go the rope two or
three times, and sousing hiiq well when he
was getting up the side.

REVIEW OF THE MARKETS-remarks.
C OTTON.—The same inactivity in Long Sta

a moderate business tlonu in Uplands, r.t about

very scarce. The principal sales were at 7| aß^

RICE—T liis article was very dull through the i

price it would command is wholly conjecture.—

FLOUR.—A small parcel of fresh ground Bal
timore Flour was received in the wpek, and sold
tit $74, which price we quote—thrugh should a
quantity be received, the priee world not be main
tained The pjd stock here is selling at $5, as in
qaality.
CQRN.—But one cargo of corn arrived duriqg
the week, that consisted of abcmtSOO bushels, and
was sold at 62 cents. We quote—rGO a62 cents
for prune, which quality is scarce.*
GROCERIES.—We havq no transaction in
Groceries to notice, except the sale of about 300
hhds. Havanna molasses, (100 hhds to arrive) at
231 cents. In prime bacon, hams, and lard, there
were some sales in the week at rates within our
quotations.
FREIGHTS.— The only two vessels loading in
the week for Liverpool, and sh e °ne for Havre,
are full, and cleared on Saturdav-rrthe rates they
filled up at. were the same as at our last. We
understand one ship, the only one in port for Eu

be 3-8 a 7-16ths. To N. York 75 cents tor square,
