February 7-14 has been designated as National Boy Scout Week in America.
Troup 56 of Soperton, sponsored by the Lions Club has been active lately in
observing this special week
The week end before was spent on a special camping trip in the backwoods of
Candler County.
During the week, the Scouts set up a camp and sign on the courthouse square.
Also the troup worked on their community service by helping th(> ladies of the
Garden Club plant flowers and shrubs in the city.
At the end of the week the Scouts attended the worship services of the Soperton
First Baptist Church

Fire Ban Bill

Keps I I. <Pete) Phillips of
Soperton anti Joe Batt It' of
Savannah have introduced a
bill to make it unlawful to start
certain brush fires
House Bill 476 would make it
a misdemeanor to start a brush
fire on someone else's land, or
to start a fire on one s own land
without taking necessary
precautions to prevent the fire
from spreading to another's
land
Phillips explained that a
similar law was passed in 1956,
but was omitted when the
Georgia Criminal Code was
revised in 1968
The Soperton legislator said
the Georgia Eorestry
Commission at present can
prosecute in such instances
only through the general arson
law, which he said id too
cumbersome
If HB 476 becomes law, he
continued, the Eorestry
Commission will have a better
means of cracking down on
those who start wildfires
“This is very important
because of Georgia’s great
forestry resources,” Phillips
added “We’ve had numerous
wildfires in South Georgia in
recent years ”
Gillis Gives
Capitol Report
Atlanta - Following a two
week recess devoted to
preparation of the
Appropriations bill for
presentation to the General
Assembly, the Legislature has
completed the first full week of
deliberation on pending
legislation
Senator Hugh Gillis, Vice
Chairman of the Senate
Appropriations Committee,
stated that after hearing from
heads of all agencies and „
thorough investigation of all
requests, it appears that
substantial savings can be
effected The measure now
goes to the House for initial
consideration
House Bill No. 1 is now
history and, according to
Senator Gillis,“lt is my hope
that the Governor will present a
plan that will prove the much
needed economies and
reorganization in State
Government ” Gillis stated
that he had long been a
promoter of economy and
efficiency in government and
plans to assist the Governor
with his proposals when they
are presented to the General
Assembly In keeping with his
sentiments in the area of
economy, Gillis voted against a
measures that would have
doubled the expense allowance
for members of the General
Assembly during the time the
Legislature is in session
Among legislation passed in
the Senate this week was a bill
authored by Senator Gillis
which would permit grants of
S4OO 00 to each student
attending an approved private
college in Georgia At the
present time, there are over
6,000 vacancies in private
colleges, whereas virtually
none are available in state
supported schools This
assistance to students attending
private colleges should
alleviate the over crowded
conditions now prevalent in
8:30, in the last of three
contests, beginning at 5:30
(Fans should see the daily
papers for a definite schedule
each night )
In last week's hoop action,
the Treutlen teams divided two
double headers, with the boys
downing Toombs Central and
NW Laurens, while the girls
were out-scored in both tilts
With two region games still to
be entered in the record books,
Treutlen’s boys season record
showed 14 wins and 4 losses
and a region mark of 7-3
In beating Toombs Central

Five Conservationists of Soil
and Water Are to be Rewarded
Five outstanding soil and
water conservationists, one
from each of the counties of
Emanuel, Toombs, Wheeler,
Treutlen, and Montgomery,
will be honored on Thursday
evening, February 25th . at 7
o'clock, at the annual meeting
of the Ohoope River Soil and
Water Conservation District
The five honorees will be
appropriately recognized for

paved parking area in the rear
of the building

The State Athletic
Commission Bill, also
sponsored by Senator Gillis,
passed the Senate by a large
majority and is now before the
House for consideration This
bill, setting up a State Athletic
Commission similar to other
large states, has been well
received by the citizens of
Georgia as well as promoters of
professional athletic events
Other bills passing the Senate
this week include a drug abuse
bill which would allow more
lenient treatment for first
offenders Also approved was
a teacher tenure bill, which
would proveide for a three year
probationary period for
teachers, beginning next
September Another measure
would prohibit elected officials
who are defeated for re election
from drawing early retirement
benefits after being voted out of
office.
