Forestry Leader

A TH ENS Nelson Brightwell
has been named head of the
Cooperative Extension Service
forestry department, filling the
vacancy created by the death
of C. Dorsey Dyer last July.
Brightwell’s appointment to
the University of Georgia post
was announced this week by
Extension Director L. W.
Eberhardt Jr.
The new department head
has been a member of the
Extension forestry staff since
1953. In his new position he
will lead a team of four
foresters and one wildlife biol
ogist.
Before joining the Extension
Service, Brightwell worked
four years with the Georgia
Forestry Commission. He was
Stephens County forester for
two years, then was assistant
forester for the Toccoa district.
As Extension forester he lias
written numerous publications
and magazine articles on forest
management practices. In 1970
he received the Distinguished
Service Award from both the
Georgia and National County
Agents Associations.
A native of Muscogee
County, Brightwell attended
Columbus High School and was
graduated in 1944. He served
two and one-half years in the
U.S. Navy and then enrolled in
the University of Georgia
School of Forestry. He was
awarded the bachelor of
science degree in forestry in
1951 and the master of
forestry in 1962.

Walter Bloom, associate vice
president for academic affairs
at Georgia Tech, will make the
keynote address at 9:15. His
subject: “Ecological Aspects of
Nutrition."

Catfish Farmers
Annual Meeting
On February 27
DOUGLAS Catfish Farmers
of Georgia, organized late last
yar, will hold its first annual
meeting here Saturday, Feb.
27, at South Georgia College.
All catfish farmers, proc
essorsand allied industry repre
sentatives are invited. Regis
tration will begin at 1 p.m. in
the College’s Union Ballroom.
The program will get under
way at 1:30.
In addition to educational
presentations Saturday after
noon and a banquet Saturday
evening, there will be exhibits
and displays of the latest
information on producing and
marketing catfish.
George A. Schuler, food
scientist with the University of
Georgia Extension Service, said
the program will deal primarily
with market outlook infor
mation and current problems
in the catfish industry.
Catfish production in race
ways, tanks and cages will be
discussed during the early part
of the program. Quality con
trol and the economics of
catfish will also be covered.
The outlook for catfish will
be presented by J. E.
Greenfield of National Marine
Fisheries Service, St. Peters
burg, Fla.
