Lee, Comm tndiug Coa j lt'der its foro"s, Tupelo, Mississippi : j General : \\ hen 1 heard that tn: ferces of • Biigadii-r-General bud be-.-n driven j i.ack and a portion of them probably cap i lured, I felt considerable solicit min for ttie | fate of the two colored regiments itiat formed a part of the command, until I informed that the Confederate torces were command".! by you. When 1 learned that, I became sat isfied that no atrocities woulu be committed upon loos" troop-, li7u that they would re cei v the treatment which humanity, as Well as their gallant "onduct, demanded. I regret to se.y that tin* hope that I entertained lias been dispelled by facts which have recently come to my knowledge. From statements which have been made to me, by colored soldiers who were eye-wit nesses, it would sec m that the massacre of Fort I’illow had been reproduced at the late affair at lirycc’e Cross Roads. Tiie details of the atrocities there commit ted I wiii not trouble you with. If true, and not disavowed, tiiev must lead to consequen ces hereafter fearful to ’contemplate. It is best that we should now have a fiir iinder • tanding upon the. question of the treatment of this class of soldiers. If it is contemplated by the Confederate Government to inurder all colored troops that may by chance of war fill into their Lands, as was the case at Fort Pillow, it is but fair that it Bhould.be freely and frank’y avowed. W Itbin the last six weeks, 1 have, on two occasions, sent colored troops into the field from this point. In. the expectation that'tiie Confederate G >vernm»nt would disavow the action of their rorumaoding 'general at the Fort Pillow mas.iitcre, I have forborne to issue any instructions to the colored troons ns to the course they should pursue towards ConfeJornte soldiers that might bill into their hands; but seeiiijfno disavowal on tbe part of the Couiederiite Government, but, on the contrary, laudations from the entire Southern press of tho perpetrators of the ma.-sacre, I may softly presume that indiscriminate slaughter is to be t|ic fate of colored troops that fall into your hands. JJ«t 1 am not will ing to lento a matter of such grave import, and involving consequences so fearful, to inference, and I have, therefore, thought it proper to address you this, believing that you would be able to indicate tbe policy that tins Coufiderate Government intended to pur sue hereafter on tins question, if it is in tended to *aise the black fl.tg against that uufortunate race, they will cheerfully accept tiia issue. Up to - this time, no troops .have fought more gallantly, and none lihvo con ducted themselves with greater propriety. They have duly indicated their right (so long deniid) to be treated as.men.
