are below Hopkinsville.

committees upon the proposition to arm the
slaves, upon the ground that the subject
properly belongs to Congress. ;

Richmond, Oct. 9 — Aft official dispatch to
the war Department states that tho enemy

Mosby attacked them at Salem, capturing
RO prisoners, all their camp equipage, baggage,
Stores, <kc. He killed and wounded a consid
erable number. Ilia loss was two wounded.
Richmond, Oct 9 — Official dispatches to the
War Department say Sheridan is still moving
down thh Valley. A large force of bis caval
ry was attacked by us on the 7th and hand
somely driven. We captured a number of
horses, several ambulances and wagons, nine
f >rges with teams, ami fifty prisoners, besides
killing and wounding a number.
Pktirsbcbo, Sept. 9.—Yesterday about
noon tbe enemy moved in force on our right,
supposed at first to be for tbe purpose of ma
king an attack on our lines. It turned out to
be nothing mgre than an extension by the
enemy of their lines on our right in order to
occupy all our lost works near Fort Mcßca.
The enemy by this move gained nothing in
the direction of the South Side road, and only
prolonged their lines, driving in afcwTidettes
and occupying this ground.

All quiet to-day. The weather is cloudy
and cool.
Richmond, Oct. B. —Northern dates of the

In the engagement of September 30, near
Squirrel Level, the Fvderals acknowledge a
loss of 2,000 killed, wounded and prisoners—
more than half were prisoners.
Farragut arrived ut Fortress Monroe on tho
4th,.and proceeded up the James river.
Guerrillas captuied two trnins of cars on
the Nashville Road, between Richland and
Fountain ll*ad, on the night of the 3d, and
burned nineteen cars.
Accounts from Missouri state that General
Price is moving on Rolla, with three columns,
the right under Shelby and M irmaduke, the
centre under himself, and tbe left undfr
Cooper, the latter being composed mainly of
half-breed Indians.
SHO rebels entered Union, the county seat of
Franklin county, on Sa urday, and captured
100 militia.
On the l*t, Forre*t shelled Athens, Ala., and
