ALBON CHA3E&A.M NISfeET—Epitow.
O N as-mining the ilutlea anti reapsnaibililie*
of the publication of the Southern Banner,
the' Editors feel themauivc* bound by every sensor
of duly, both to the fori tier patrons of the Atheni
an, and. those of their friends whoae aid they'
confidently anticipate—in order to retain tbe one
*ind merit the other—to lay before them a fair and
candid, but succinct exposition of the principle*
by which they'are to be governed and directed in
the prosecution of ihoir arduous and responsible
undertaking. They do not think it neceesory nt
this late day—a flay which is shedding its light
and glory, with such general and invigorating
power over our whole body politic, to outer elabo
rately and minutely into n detail of their political
views and opinions. Indeed, .todo so, would bo
virtuully offering an insult to the good senso of
the community. To profess tlio name of the
blessed founder of our holy religion,'is in itself a
sufficient guarantee of the principles of the getur-.
ine Christian: so do theyjiold if only nereseury Ur
own and profess the names ot the three great
upostles of correct prinoipler, in order to satisfy
nn enlightened community of the nature of their
polilichi faith, anil the invariable tendency (X
their future practice. The Southern Banner,
then, willrest hereafter for support nnd patronage,
on the broad, firm, and immutable rock of Re
publicanism All those’ pure upd hallowed doc
trines which originally Hashed upon the world
from tlio pen of u Jefferson—which have beeu
cherished und handed down to us by our venera

triumphantly practised, in many respects, by ouV
favorite Troup, will in it find a champion, howev

der tho Bancor hereafter, (and they say it without _
intending the lenst reflection on the course pur. ‘
sued by their worthy predecessor, tlie late propri
etor of the Athenian,) of more general interest
and of greutervalue.to the party, than it has been
of late, and none of whiclt seems tp them, so well
calculdtcd to produce this result, as the opposition
winch will be slrortly exerted, in this place, to
their press, and to their principles. This idea
tliet do not deprecate, but rather cherish, knowing
that an honorable and literal opposition, will tend
to stimulate them to the performance of their du
ty, whilst they liopo it wilt rally to their support,
their friends, ana the friends of the party, for
whoso interests and prosperity they are determin
ed to devote every honorable exertion.
The editors have engaged among their cones-
irondcnM. aeveral gentlemen of eatahlislpjd Lit
erary and Political character, whose communica
tions will hereafter serve :n enrich and gdorn the
columns of the Southern Banner. And with ro-
gard to tho other departments of the paper, they
run but add, that their trust exertions will, bo de
voted to render them useful anil amusing to their
patrons nndreadcr*.
Great promises, arc, however, at best, but choap
commodities, and of course they foci themselves
bound to snv ns little, and promise ns charily as
possible; but in launching forth thcly little hairpin
upbn tho stormy waves of public opinion, they
must trust nlone to their skilful pilotngrnfor merit
ing, und winning for it, moorings safe pud snug
in tlie hearts of their fellow-citizens.
