The Democratic Convention—Wliat la
Democratic “I)ea*c”f
Our reader* have already been imqrnaed
of lha more that baa frown up io the rank*
of the Georgia Democracy, o*er the late
convention and it* action. A Urge wing of
the party repudiate the convention altogeth
er, declaring that the manner of ite call waa
unusual, and that ite action haa no binding
effect whatever. They maintain that the
meeting of* rnambeta uaorped the lawful
powere of the State Executive Committee,
who, they contend, are alone autborieed to
call a convention of the party for any pur
pose. They aUo allege that the Democrat
ic mambera revolved themaclvaa into
vention, which, however, ia not true in point
of fact. They merely advertiaed a call,
lanving it to tha people to tend delegate
from hortta or empower them to act accord
ing to tbair option. We can eee nothing
In their action, at any tiro*, to jaetify th*-
charga of a desire to exercise rights belong
iog only to the people. We have no inter
est in the matter, but we do the members
the justice of "vindicating the truth of his
tory 7 ' in Chair behalf.
On the other hand, the friends of the con*
vantion maintain that no injustice has been
done, no usage of the party infringed, and
that a delegation has been appointed whose
high character and Democratic fidelity no
man dare queetion. They challenge their
opponents to produce the proof that any
advantage has been taken, or any usage of
the party violated. The Federal Union ed
itor goes back many years and ext mints
the flies in his oflice, from which he estab
lishes the fact that a call by the members of
the Legislature "ia in accordance with the
uaetee of the Democracy for a very long
time, if not univervally. If e gives the course
of the party as far back as 1M7, which is
in strict conformity to tha action just bad
and now so hitlsrly complained of. The
editor elso contends that the Executive Com
mittee was appointed at a Gubernatorial
Convention, end its duties were no doubt
intended to be limited to {/to calling of fu
ture Gubernatorial Conventions,"
Thus stands the quarrel, and we think
the convention men have clearly right and
authority on their side. The anli.Cobb
men will i of lyo able to meet the argument)
and they must fly to some other resort to
sustain tbair disaffection. Wo advisa them
to come out honestly, at once, and state tha
trua reason of fheit opposition, viz: You
have nominated the wrong man—Howell
Cobb haa been put forward as the choice ol
the Georgia Democracy for President, and
we wont hurt him. Hera is the real aocrofj
why not Jet it out ami feel easier fur the de
