The State Conventions. VIRGINIA DOUGLAS CONVENTION. Staunton, Va., Aug. 17—The Douglas convention met here yesterday, and they have delegates from eighty count r*. Thu indications are that they will nominate n straight out and out Douglas electoral ticket. 1*. M.—There are no indications on tho part of the Douglas men, in the convention, to accept any propositions from the Brock* inaidgr party. Tho convention has fdopt* cd resolutions rc-aflirming (ho Miilnruurc or Charleston platform, and resolutions de nouncing the present Federal Administra tion. No elector* chosen yet. Aug. 18.—The Douglas convention adop ted a resolution to cast tho electoral vote for any candidate who can defeat Lincoln. There were many accessions Irom the Breck inridge convention. A full Douglss electo ral ticket was nominated. The Crops.—A visit this week to the Milledgeville Convention aflegded an oppor tunity to observe tho condition of tuc corn and cotton crops along 138 miles of railroad. We Relieve thnt we are entirely correct in saying that there is no: a fair crop ol either un any plantation between this city and Macon, along the railrood line. They ull exhibit evidences ul severe drouth, and it is difficult indeed to find a field that w'll yield ten bushels ol corn or two hundred pounds of cotton (judging the latter by the sue of the plant and the uurnber ot bulla at ihia advanced period ol the season} per into, when they caino suddenly upon a large ! county in the Stale was largely represented. cc« l- l camp ol Indians, numbering, be thought, A cl)mm i Ueo Wai appointed to confer with tthousand. i he Indiana called them- |to Djug , M „ ConVKI ,Uon, in session s l awnees, but lie and bis party be- ~ lieved them to be Cheyennes, ns they had been victorious hi the fight ot u h«w days belore, mid had driven the Pawnees Irom vicinity. Between Macon and Millcdge- villa tho prospect is decidedly better, ami the crops of both corn and cotton, though not very fine, present a much more encour aging appearance—thoy have evidently tiud more favorable seasons than those west ot Macon. Planters attending tho Conventions from the different parte ot the .State make variant reports of the crops in their respective r«« gions. The reasons have been very partial, and the majority scented to complain ol drouth almost as bad aa that which has destroyed many a Impel ul anticipation in the region between Columbus and Macon. The Mains.—Within tho last week abun dant rains have fallen in this region, and planters are now much more hop.ful ol lair crops of patatoce and peas. Tho prospect lor cotton, too, itt belter, though that crop hss several risks to run, and the dwarlisli size of tho plant prevents tho hope ul even a lair crop with the moat favorable masons Irum now till frest. Wo understand that unusual attention is given by planters gen* erslly to their turnip crops, now planting, as they rely upon them as a substitute (or corn as feed. A Sad Accident*—We learn that Henry Vtoden Berg, son oi our fellow citizen, T. H. Vaogtjn Berg, was shot and killed at El- laville, (ia., about the 7th ol tlii.s month, by Dr- bivins. It appears that young Van den Ucrg was on a visit to Dr. Bivins, and that rhe Doctor was examining an old j>it>u>i when it accidentally went oil, and tbo eon. tents took effect in the abdomen ol the youth which caused Ins dentil the next day.
