City Light GuardH.—Wo understand
that sixty one men on tho roll ot tho City
Light Guards (Capt. Colquitt) arc ready lor
tho service of tho State, and are drilling
once or twico a day. The^ ure young men,
ol patriotic impulso, and may bo rolled
upon in the day of trial. This company
was very prompt in tendering its services
to tho State, nod is anxious to bo among
the first in the field.
Phelps is right in his opinion that the
Southern people, it they really -menn to ho
independent, should encourago all branches
ot homo manufacture. He thinks that
fancy conicctiounry can no well bn put up
bore as at tho North, and is going extensive

Thu military men on board highly com
plimented the South Cnroliuiiiiis on thuir
shooting iu this first attempt. Tlioy say
it wan well done; that oil which was nee
ded was a littlo better range, which they
p-obably could have obtained in a few
minutes. Their line was perfect ; nnd the
opinion is expressod thru some oint had
charge of tho guns who understood Ins
business.
Two guns wer employed ; the emnllcr,
it is believed, a twelve pounder, ami the
larger a thirty-two pounder. Tills how-
ever, iu only conjecture. Whatever «heir
size, they were well manned. They wero
fired rapidly nnd w ith a will.
It is believed that it the South Caroli-
nisiis had not mode n uiistnko wo should
havo partaken ol thoir hospitality, what
ever it may ho, aa prisoners. Il the battery
on Morris Inland had waited ten minutes
longer before firing wo should have been
completely at their mcrcy> it was only
necessary for them to watt until wo wcio
within range of (lie gunu of Fort Moultrie,
and et-cape would have been impossi
ble. So thut, had it not -been for this new
and unexpected battery on Morris Inland,
and its premature firing, we should inevi
