THE GAZETTE. i Wednesday, January 24, 1874. The Christmas Tree. As previously "contemplated Hay the ElLerton Sabbath-school, their Christ mas tree celebration was had on the ev ening - of the 26th nit., at the Methodist church. On Friday morning a beautiful ce dar was procured and placed in the chnrch. After sometime spent in deco rating the room, the presents commenc ed coming in from nearly every one in terested in the school. Those composing the committee for the arranging of matters concerning the tree, &c., and especially the ladies spar ed no pains in undertaking to make it a success, and we say without intending to make any of them blush, that in our opinion had old Santa Claus happened in about the time the tree was lighted after the presents had. been placed upon it, he would have gained information about Christmas trees that he hsd never before dreamed of. The presents were so tastily arranged upon the tree, that those who are never pleased with a ly thing, could have found no fault, and as a finising touch to the already beati ful sight, the tree was prettily festooned and wreathed with popped pop-corn. Those who were engaged in getting up this entertainment, deserve a great deal of credit for the pleasure they afforded so many. About Bo’clck, Friday evening, after the opening ceremonies were through with, consisting of speeches, intespersed with most excellent music, the distribu tion presents was entered into. How many little hearts leaped with joy as their names were called to receive pres ents, we know not, but to look at those little children as they clustered around the tree, their beaming countenances, and their little eyes brilliantly illumina ted with and expectation was enough convince us that they were hap py beyond measure, and joyous without limit. Our hearts leaped once or twice as our name was called, but fell almost as suddenly when we eeceived a candy doll or a two cent frog toy. We would state here that we think those frogs, one of which we got were sold two for a cent or a cent for two, but we suppose the box which it was in cost a cent, anyhow we value the lot at two cents. To the giver we proffer our profound obeis ance, and hope that some day we will be able to return the compliment, pro vided we find out who the donor was, of course. But the Christmas-tree was an admi rable success, and did credit to the Sab bath-school, in whose honor it was giv en. The press of the New World agrees in pronouncing The Aldine the finest o - gan of art and literature ever issued ; nd the January number is a wonder of beau ty and a marvel of literature. The full page illuitrations consist, first of an ex quisite tint, a snow scene, by Thomas Moran, of New Year’s Morning in Ed g land, with the parishoners saluting the pastor in front of the porch of the churcu. The drawing of the trees is excellent, while the snow effects are true to nature. The second full page picture is a grand and magnificent view of Moore’s Lake in the Rocky Mountains of Utah, the high est lake in America. This was sketched on the spot by Thomas Moran and rs a rare view of American scenery is alone worth the price of the magazine. The third of these great pictures is “The Irish Schoolmaster,” after Nicol; by John. S. Davis, a very clever and charscterestic drawing of a race of pedogues wliicl: once flourished in Ini at. The fourth whole page picture is a vmw of Fairfield, Conn., by Kruseman Van Elten—a quiet New England landscape, with hills, dales, a river, nestling village, etc. The other illustrations in this number are two won derful drawings of Rocky Mountain see nery, by Tnomas Moran, of Springville Canon in Utah—a stupendous and fright ful mountain gore; and Colburn’s Butte, jo. Ivanarro Canon—a miss of red sail ci stern 1 ®? two thousand fe t high, in the •uiidst, of unapareled scenery. Gustave Pore two wonderfully drawn pictures dt biotinqf scenes in the Bible; ‘"Christ Blest in o le children,” and “The Bescent from . Ore's.” The first is fall of beauty aiu 1 loveliness; the second is touching in its s oirow, and grand in ifcs sublimityVßur/'foo the Pec Bird is a sweet picture, after J riss E. Ed wards, full of rare bloom a' nd sorrow for the little songster. The Gt rmari a’rtist, Bossier, has a cosy interior, of home and love, called “A Famn’ iar 4ir, ' ineie is still an another' picture, Tt ild Flowers, which gratefully complete. ” list of illustrations. We can assure our old patrons that it ia kept fully up to its high standard; and it is the only reliable and perfect ed preparation for restoring Gray or Faded Hair to its youthful color, making it soft, lustrous, and silken. The scalp, by its use, becomes white and clean. It removes all eruptions and dandruff, and, by its tonic prop erties, prevents the hair from falling out, as it stimulates and nourishes the hair-glands. By its use, the hair grows thicker and stronger. In baldness, it restores the capillary glands to their normal vigor, and will create anew growth, except in extreme old age. It is the most eco nomical Hair Dressing ever used, as it requires fewer applications, and gives the hair a splendid, glossy appearance. A. A.
