THE GAZETTE. - - r —i Wednesday, May 19, 1875. Georgia Railroad. At tiie convention of stockholders of the Georgia Railroad Company in An gusta, last week, President King was re elected by a majority of seventy two Voters, John H. James, of Atlanta, placed on the Directory, and General Mcßae, of the State road, made General Super intendent. A Hew Eailroad Project. And now wc are told that railroad men are agitating the question of building a rraihrnd from Pine House, on the Char lotte,'Columbia & Augusta railroad, to ‘ connect with the Richmond and Atlanta Air Lin® by way of the Elberton Air- Line. The object is to make a connec tion by that route with the great west ern and seaboard line. According to all the information we can obtain this would be one of the cheapest roads for its length that could bo constructed. The grading of the last twenty miles this way could be probably done at a cost of one thousand dollars per mile, and we are told the remainder of tho route would average but little more. Commencement of Hartwell High School. Tho commencement exorcises of the Hartwell High School will be opened on Sunday, the 30th inst., with a com mencement sermon, to bo followed by the usual order of exercises on Monday and Tuesday, closing the day last named. This school comprises nearly one hun dred scholars, built up by the energy of a board of trustees who entered upon their duties with a fixed resolution to succeed. We honor them for their good work, a3 we honor the cause in which they labored. Mr. Looney and his excellent lady have won golden opinions among the good people of Hart county, and in their sphere have done more to attract attention to the promising town of Hart well than tho various other interests com bined. For the Cazetts.] The Pie-Nic Last Saturday. Mn. Editor : To bo up with the times .the generous people about Mattox’s mill on Falling creek exerted themselves to quite an extent last Saturday to make the time pleasant t© all who participa ted in the pic-nic had at that place on the above mentioned day, and well did they succeed, as every one, we think, will readily admit. Mr. Samuel Snellings, kindly tender ed his house, (a commodious building) Jot tu accommodation of tlic young people, and nothing was left undone by the hospitably-inclined peoplo to make the time one long to be cherished with memories of pleasure by all present. In deed, tho surroundings were so auspi cious that it would have taken an indi vidual whose tastes had never been pleased to have made an observation de rogatory to tho many opportunities open for tho enjoyment of tho gay and fes tivo. THE DAY. Early in the morning tho general ap pearances of the weather Bigns and the feeling of the atmosphere indicated a pleasant, though a rather warm day, which proved true in both particulars. While a little warm for those who tipped tho light fantastic, it was all the more pleasant to those who didn’t participate in the dancing. THE SITUATION •is one of the prettiest and most desira ble in the .county for a congregation of the kind assembled thero on Saturday. Amid tho ancient forest of a land, wild, vast and magnificently grand, was situa ted the place where this large concourse of happy people had gathered to pass a day of recreation in social intercourse with their neighbors and friends. THE AMUSEMENTS were about the same usually attendant upon occasions of the character, com prising cards, dancing, etc. Many di vided off into couples and strolled about the grove, other eouples sought resorts away from the merry throng to tell sweet tale3 of love to each other, and determine the day, mayhap, when they would bo the happiest of the happy.— And still others brought into requisition carriages and buggies as places suitable for private confabs, and though we saw more than’one pair whose every thought seemed to be in concert, we wont partic ularize. One young gentleman told us that he was made supremely felicitous while tete-a-tete with'a blushing damsel by her telling him that “when the ocean ceased to obi? and flow, when the stars ceased to glitter, fair luna no more shed her transplendent rays upon the earth, and her old father failed to wind up the clock, then and not until then would her love for him falter.” While ah this was going on, many were dancing, while still otners were gathered around the conviv ial card table eujoying tbemsolves at whist or euchre. Upon the whole the hours apparently glided by unnoticed by all. Wo cannot say more than that all seemed happy. REFRESHMENTS. Now, Me., our descriptive powers will fail, but we will try and give you a rough outline of tko luxurious repast 'that?greeted the eyes" of the brilliant and happy assemblage. A table about sixty feet*long Was fitted up for the oc casion, and on it was placed one of the most abundant, sumptuous and va riegated dinne/f? that i\ has ever been your correspondent’s happy lot to assist in crawling on the outside of. The good people of the neighborhood understand preparing for the like, and wo congratu late them on the magnificent display of their culinary qualifications on Sattir day The “turnpike road to people’s hearts, lies through their mouths,” and if it had been possible the party became „ more joyous as they partook of the nice ties and delicacies in superabundance on tho festive board. Tho people about Mattox’s mill are a hospitable people as every one who knows the neighborhood will concede. May they live long and be prosperous. ELBERTONIANS. Some of the young gallants from your town brought a bevy of rosy lipped, dimpled-cheeked lassies down to the pic nic, and they were welcomed cordially by the getters-up of the festivity. All the girls donned their sweetest and prettiest appearance, the young gentle men their most gallant manners, and with looks of entire sanction beaming from the countenances of the elder per sons “all went merry as a marriage bell.” ■ X. gjtow gimltournttk A FORTUNE IN IT.
