TirlE GAZETTE. I—i1 —i Wednesday, January 26,1876. Eailroad Convention at Knoxville. A large convention in behalf of the Blue Itidge Railroad was held at Knox ville, Tenn., last week, according to ap pointment. A creditable delegation was present from Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Georgia, including Mr. E M. Rucker, of Elbert county. Rubt. Thompson, of South Carolina, was made President, and a Vice Presi dent was chosen from each State repre sented. Letters were read from a num ber of prominent gentlemen interested in the success of the road, regretting their inability to be present. Able addresses were delivered by Messrs. Rucker, Erwin, Thompson, and others upon the importance of this road, the benefits to be derived from its com pletion through a large scope of coun try, Ac. The following resolution was offered and passed unanimously: Resolved, Thot this convention pledg es its influence and earnest exertions to push forward the enterprise of the building and equipment of the entire line from Maryville, Tennessee, to Wal halla, l( S. C., at the earliest practica ble period. The Committee on Resolutions pre sented an able address to the country, ' which closed with the following resolu tions : Resolved, That J. P. Reed and R. A. Thompson, of South Carolina; C. D. Smith and James L. Robinson, of North Carolina ; R. I. Wilson, and B. B. Le noir, of Tennessee, be and they are hereby constitute 1 a committee, whose duty it shall be to confer with the com panies or individuals owning the sec tions,of the Blue .Ridge road, within their respective States, on the subject of consolidating their several interests and organizing anew Company for the ownership and management of the en tire line from Knoxville, Tenn., to An derson, S. C., and to ascertain upon what basis and terms said new Com pany may be organized. Said commit tee shall report the result of their con ferences to an adjourned meeting of this Convention to be held at An derson, S. C., on the 30th of March next. Resolved, That when this Convention adjourns, it do adjourn to meet at An derson, South Carolina, on the 30th of March next. Which address and resolutions were unanimously adopted. Judge Temple made some congratu lotory remarks about the prospects of an early completion of the -great enter prise, and was followed by Mr. Rucker, who in an eloquent and forcible manner urged unity of action in completing this great link which was to bind with fraternal bonds the mountains of East Tennessee to toe aboard of the Atlan tic, setting forth the advanw@f, and d© sirability of such connection in w. guage that left no room to doubt the sincerity of his convictions and his de termination to aid to the extent of his influence and ability the consummation so devoutly to be wished. The convention adjourned after a har monious session of two days. DIREOTOEB’ MEETING. There will be a meeting of the Di rectors of the Elberton Air Line Rail road Company at Goss’ school house on the 10th day of February next. It is important that all the members of the Board be present on the occasion. We have much business that should be lack ed into before the stockholders’ meeting, which will come off the first day of March. Our official year will expire then, and we should be able to present to the stockholders a clear and intelligi ble report of all our transactions during the year, and the Board ought to exam ine the records of onr Company, and the reports of the officers before they are presented to the stockholders, and see that everything is correctly made out and represented. Besides there will be several proposi tions for furnishing rails, and other ma terial, which wo wish to lay before the Directors and ask their consideration upon. The prospect for completing our road at an early day is brightening, and if our Directors and friends of the enter prise at home will renew their energy and take the same interest in the work as they have in the past wo will have it finished. We know there is great de pression in all kinds of business, but this very depression presents us a good opportunity to get our material for equiping the road at lower rates than could possibly be obtained under other circumstances And if we can succeed just at this time we will have a good road, and perhaps the cheapest one ev er built in the Uuited States. Running as our road does through a good, fertile country, with a live, active population, if it can be finished now while material is so cheap, there can be no doubt of its being able to sustain itself, and make the money put into it a good and safe investment. D. A. Mathews, Pres’t. E. A. L. RR. No More Law Students. While gratified at the numerous ap plications daily pressed upon ns, we nre compelled to announce that from the nature of our arduous duties before the courts, we cannot take anymore appren tices in the law business. This once beautiful, sprightly and im proving village no longer remains, but was on the 10th inst. transformed into a full fledged city. On that day a May or, Recorder and five Aldermen were elected to rule and govern the city cor porate. The election passed off very quietly, and resulted in the selection of Maj. J. H. Skelton, as Mayor ; C. W. Seidel, Recorder; and Messrs. John Peek, J. B. Benson, W. Y. Holland, J. W. AVilliams and C. P. Presnell, Aider men. The latter named gentleman de clined the honor, and as the Mayor and four Aldermen were installed into their offices, an election was ordered to be held, to fill the vacancy caused by the declination of the respected commodore. C. W. Seidel, the elected Recorder, be ing in Atlanta will qualify within the time prescribed. There is also on foot a memorial to our Legislature, asking to vest the Mayor with con-current juris diction with the Superior Court in all criminal offences under felonies. We hope it will have no taint of a county court. Move up, Eiberton! High School. The High School has been incressing almost daily since its opening and in view of the fact that such excellent and cultivated teachers have charge of it we confidently expect it to continue to in crease, Those of our people who fail to avail themselves of the great educa tional facilities offered them the present year will neglect a golden opportunity, that may never return. - Baptist Chureh. There was a fine attendance at this church last Sabbath. The Rev. H M. Barton, of Fair Play, South Carolina, preached. He has consented to officiate at this church the present year.
