AGRICULTU R A 1,. GAHNEKED J?OK THE GAZETTE. By B. A. K. A Family Obchakd.—lu stating wa.it I conceive to bo the requLu pi 3 good family orchard I am ;aided by actual experience with a family if eight . r nine cersons and a 'goodly slim: a oi friendly visitors. Of coarse wo are all habitual fruit ei as conviction, and as appb.; are more reliable than lost othe to calculate throughout August to May. We find that we need three classes of apples to be in condition tor r.vo during the whole season. First, not leer thr u two first-class dessert or eating varieties alway in mellow or ripe condition, for table use and for visitors to send by children to school, and to gi.e to.less fortunate neighbors. This will require about a dozen varieties for the sen ten. Second, one or two rich, sub acid vti rieties, of good . rious ways, and for drying. This will take eight or tei is Thir 1 sweet apples of the best ; .U: - : • bn Of these wo use more than tin. hre varieties, as we baked sweet quite a . .. constant succo;-;do:: . roqun - * . A- or c'grt kinds. Thus it will be St family orch ird thirty vari sties of trees should *-.;■>■ be less d.r,- forty or fifty, allowing -or two or three trees each of the leading nr.ikoi v-u.s and to provide against. 1 in seasoiis of of partial failure which quite frequent ly occur.—M. B Bateman, i- Cos. Gen man, Wash fob 3ohers 31. li. Baton •'•t has used a carbolic v/asli for scale, aphis and other small ins*, cts on fruit trees, for success. Ho describes it thu. in the Country Gentlcutan: 'hly - ‘C : first was to empty a ilv<; pound c. a of the soap into a barrel, and into it two or tl water, lettil or more to for use, fill uj the bar water —making wash—enough for about ii,coo cos, according to their size. Of late years instead of sending for the patent soap, I have taken a 'gallon of common, soft soap, and thinned it tvitii a p .ilful of hot waterjj then stirred i?> Half ayioumt of carbolic acid, and after it kn * :omt a day or longer for chemical union t > ta’ o place, add cold, soft water to moke : barrel (30 gallons) bf the wash. Of course any one eon reduce t ic an for a smaller ‘quantity, and have the proportions about the sann Sinco the first season he 1 made one (application* each so.mon and that about the first of July, but in thick ly settled districts he advises two ap plications each season. No harm has been experienced from its use on the most delicate peach trees, while it is al so effective on the moro hardy apple. Pruning Gkafe Vines.—Mr. J. Whit tlesey, before the Michigan Pomogical Society, defended the long arm system of pruning, because it fully equalized the flow of sap in cane and fruit. In 1803 he planted 120 Concord vines six feet apart in the row. They had good care and attention, but boro little fruit. Tho spring of the seventh year from planting, he removed every other vino, and extended the arms to six feet in stead of three. The result was a Urn: crop of fruit. To further test this matter, in a Catawba vineyard \s 1,000 vinos, and eight feet a ft it every other vine tvas loved, and the arms of tho others extended to eight feet instead of four. This largely in creased the quantity of gr .pcs He stated that he had Cos cord vin c;* ing 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45, feet of trellis that carry every year more grapes, by actual test in baskets, than any adjoin ing vines planted 12 feet apart, and covering tho same number of foot of trellis.—Southern Pantation. A OUEE EOS CONSUMPTION. A correspondent of Southern Planta tion wrifces as follows about the power of a well known plant* “I have discovered a remedy for pulmonary consumption. It has cured a number of cases after they commenced bleeding at th- lung, a :.; the hectic flush was already on • cheek After trying this remedy to my own sa‘ isfaction, I have thoughtphil Lu >py re quired that I should let it be known to the world. It is the common nmllen steped strong and sweetened with cof fee sugar, and drank frefiy. The herb should be gathered before '.be end of July, if convenient. Young or oi J plan ta aro good dried in the shade and kept in clean paper bags. Tho medicine must be continued from three to six months according to . tho nature of the disease. It is very good for the ves sels also. It strengthens the system, and builds up instead of taking away strength. It makes good blood, and takes inflammation away from the lungs It is the wish of the writer that every periodical in the United Staten, Canada and Europe should publish tbi3 recen t for the benefit of the human family. Lay this up, and keep t la tho house ready for use. “This is very bracing weather, said a bland landlord to an unhappy boarder. “Glad to hear it,” was tho reply. “Hope it will brace up your breakfast coffee, which has boon very pale and weak of late." The proposition that the functions cf the President pro tem of the Senate have scope beyond the opening of the returns of which ho is custodian and handing them to the official tellers must be regarded as abandoned. The Louisiana Returning Board are to bo arrested and brought, in con tempt to the bar of the House.
