A* this remedy gives no prompt, effectual and permit oenl relief, in all ordinary cases, when used warn after iin- altaek, paraoua can scarcely realize tliat tliey hint been really tuucli sick, and very naturally conclude they wer! not attacked with fever, and if no, ‘it was trifling —a little cold, which gave alarm—it could have been notliingnf consequence—it would have passed off with .lol anything—-that medicine had lie effect.” Tim general impression on the subject of fever is such, that thoughts not. unlike the above tbllow the cure of a common case as naturally as men think at all; and it is lint until - 1 1 e individual lias witnessed many vanes that lie can fully .valise the truth: and even then he may conclude them all very ti lliiug cases, which would have readily yielded to any simple medicine, yet persons, though tliey have been tlnis successful in perhaps hundreds of cases, must expect that tin-re will cases occur wli.-re there is some •■'gallic or .o al cause so great as to require partieular attention, or though success ill in reducing the fever, it will again i ise as the influence of the “ kjllld” passes nil. a* the exalting cause may still exist. It is to guard against disappointment in Mtc.it esses that 1 have given and frequently refer to what I have called a “synopsis.” Iti-iiisi-ks on Kcvtrs In U.n.rsrl* Oil this subject I wish to be fully understood. Ily the term “ fevers,” 1 comprehend all febrile affections to which the human frumo is subject, including small pox ami other eruptive fevers; but aa they arise by a great variety of causes, anil in quite dissimilar oniistitutions mid habits, they of course differ considerably in their development and exhibit a variety of forms or ty|x>s; yet all are distinguished liy (lie same general character istic*—that o: undue excitement in the circulatory and nervous systems—inducing more or less unnatural Ire qi'e.ny in the pulse, sense of heat, dryness of the skin, debility, Ac. To show that I am not wholly alone in the opinion l idtatice, 1 quote from the Cetohmfcd Prof. T. Watson, of King's College, Loudon, wln.se work <>u the •• Princi cl-s slid Practice of Physic” is a text Iks,k in many of --nr mod leal colleges, and consequently slanelardnutlnui/y. ‘hi page ff!M, he says:—“We hear continually, lavth in and out id the profession, different species of fever spo ken of. OastrivKnterie, nint so forth. Now. admitting that fever shows itself under various forms, I am iversiuuleil that the effect upon the mind of all Ibis sub-division, is bail and hurtful. It eb - iinages a disposition, ulrcady too prevalent, to pre s- rihe lor a disease according to its ikons. There is on Min- of genuine distinction between continil.il fevers, tlint can lie relied on. They run insensibly into each ■ohsr. ev.-u Hie most dissimilar of them, anil are often l.ocsable to the same cause.' 1 I he above is u great fact, one worthy of remembrance and I would impress ou your uiiuds the folly of hunting up or troubling youi self about a “ name;” if you have (ever, treat it at once aa hereafter directed, and you i oill be. mrH instead of any distiiictcluirueti-r being devel oped, ao us to be properly uaiued by the most seiontitlc. This assertion is no hypothesis baaed on closet specula vl,ms or visions of mind, but mi experience at the bed aide of tbe sick, in hundreds, aye, thousands of cases (hv myself and others) under a great variety of clr - uiiiaiHiii es. aeasona and climates. Bear this in mind, and treat at once without regard to name, ami rest nawurd you will seen be frei'd from all dreud of linger ing and dangio-mia fevers. But as cases may have be • ome devi-loped before tho “ Fluid” ia given, either by neglect, or under sotuo other treatment, 1 will describe a- briefly ns possible the proper course to lie pursued iu nil ul tlie most pinmlui'lit fevers, though the “ Buies” an I “ Synopsis” will be ani|ily sufficient for all those accustomed to attendance upon the sick. Variola, Varioloid, Rubeola amt Scarla tina; or Bin all Pox, Varioloid, iUoasloa, and Mvarlet Fever. As all of these diseases are uUi-ndod with fever, which m fact'is tlie most prominent symptom, tlie treatment differs line little from that of common fevers. Kentcaiher never wait to learn the •• name,” whether it is one or tlie ether, or neither, as they all commence i villi freer, but treat it at once; govern the fever ami there will l- no trouble; there will im but little eruption even in simill pox. This, to most minds, is anew idea, and doubtless will he regarded w ith ridicule by many. I noicrtheless Isihlly make tlie assertion, tlint small (six, if treated as 1 direct, will be ad short; attended with bill little erup tion; little or no pjlting, and that there is no nr.crssitj/ of its running its ordinary course., tln this I w ill stake not only my reputation, hut a.i iliut 1 hold most dear, besides, on thisSilljei-t. I have good authority; that of Prof. Watson, previously quoted. lie says, page Hi-i: “Tim may abate the force of the eruptive lexer, and keep down, It Is believed, the nuinbi.r nj the pustules hy spline purges, Ac.” Here is the admission that it may In- done. When (lie lliroat is affected, any of tlie ordinary gargles may he used, and the surface bathed, as llouigtit advisable. In one ease, on the ship Duchess d'Orh-ans, the tongue and lauens were so milch swollen that the patient could not swallow or s|s-ak. mill lie was cured hy dropping the Fluid on his tongue, drop hy drop, till h6coiil-l swallow, wlieii il was given in tenspisniful doses erenj hour, till all alarming symptoms disappeared. The swelling of the throat was reduced so ns to enable him to take nour ishment ill about twelve hours by the Fluid alone,— Used to wet the throat frequently, it is doubtless the best gargle in all such cases. Purrprral or Clitlilbed Fever. It should be re peated as long as the f-ver continues, as in other cases. The bowels ol course should Is- attended to. 11l connection with this subject, 1 cannot refrain from making a few general remarks, which, if regarded Wy the ladies, will save them much pain and suffering. It is to inform them of the happy effect of tlie Fluid in many of their trials. In child-birth, its relaxing and soothing effect deprives (lie labor of much of its pains ami difficulties; it must In- fried to lie appreciated. rainful menstruation will In- relieved at once by a com mon dose and retiring. Jh-stlessncss. nervous irritability, ora cold taken at a delicate time, is easily relieved liy its use; in short, it is olio of the most convenient and effectual remedies for ninny of the ills of females, if not the moat so of any medicine known. Its effect is uniform, relaxing tlie whole system, removing all excitability and iritahility of the nervous as w ell us the circulatory. It will not force sleep like opiates, lint it will sooth mid quiet the system so that one can sleep naturally and healthy ; lienee its use in so many cases. Synopsis. To avoid couslaul repetition, and condense tin- treat ment hh much as possible, i give under tills bead general directions for ull cases. As file Negative Klectric Fluid w ill change tlie condition called fever, or subdue and coutrol it under ull circumstance*, without regard to the naiiw it may be or ought to he called, it should he gix eu wherever or whenever it exists; yet it cannot he ex pected to control all organic or local causes, which, when such exist, must he removed in order to effect a permanent cure. When such indications occur in any case, tliey should be appropriate means, and these sohul-1 be given while giving the “ Fluid,” and in connection witii it, when occasion requires, us they will then more readily act, producing more general effect, besides no unnecessary time will then be lost As the ‘, Fluid” alone will sub due tlie fever, I call all else auxiliary treatment. If tbe bowels ore costive, given cathartic (see auxili aries) with tlie tirst dose, or soon after, and should it fail to Operate in due time, repeat tlie dose; if attended Witii diarrliiea, give something known to he good for that complaint, though if caused by irritability, tlie “ Kluid” will soon relieve that condition; if severe local puili or intlauiluatiou, apply some stimulating liniment, a mustard plaster, u blister, fomentations of bitter herbs, or, perhaps, cloths wet iu cold water, to the part; if violent pain in tlie head, apply cold water, ice water, if convenient, or some cooling application, and bathe the feet iu hot water; if the fever is very high, skin dry aud hot, with great suffering, sponge or bathe tlie whole surfate with water at. an agreeable temperature; “the saliue wash,” vinegar and water or spirits and w ater, either will afford great relief and aid tin- medi cine in tukiug effect, after which there will lie no trou ble; if the patient Inis been reduced or is much prostra ted, give touics aud stimulants, particularly in low fevers, iu absence of fever or when indicated; also, during convalescence, when tlie patient lias liecouie re duced ; if there is nausea and vouiitiug, that must be allayed before any medicine will remsiii on the stomach to do any good; for this purpose 1 generally give some gentle emetic to cleanse tlie stomach ; warm water, if given plentifully, will auswer every purpose; when tlie stomach lias settled, give tin- •• Fluid” and a cathartic if necessary; in short, treat all the prominent symptoms as YOU would under any other circumstances, g’iviug the “Kluid” at the same time ns directed, ami success will croxvu your efforts; indeed, you cannot realize it till you have seen, aud then you will be astonished at tin- ease witii which you can control nil febrile excitement, Auxiliaries. Parties may feel at a loss to know what is meant by cathartics, Ac., as physicians arc usually pai-ticuiar about w hat is used. 1 have found uo such necessity when using the Fluid, ami to lie fully understood by all, 1 w ill name a lew of the different articles of medi cine I have referred to, via:— Cl Harllcs. —Articles that purge or iqs-iate on tin* bow els, such as castor oil, salts, senna, any of tho roots or barks, and many pills, nutibilioiut, Ac.; anything known to lie good for such purposes. Hepatlca.—Anything known to act on the liver particularly, |nn tal circulation and secretions generally. Any of tlie articles depended on hy tin- different schools for this purpose, w ill answer when used in connection witii the “Fluid” or while tho system is under Its in fluence. And one may choose euloincl— another, blue mass—the third, |>odoph.vlliu—the fourth, mandrake root, and so on; each may take his choice and lie suc cessful. Tonics.—Articles that give tone or strength, such hh quinine, various barks, roots mid bitter lierlis Bone set or thorougliwoi t is one of the best used in fevers. AutriuKeiit*.—Such as check the action ot the bowels, laudanum and other preparations of opium are used; also, many mixtures, not properly nstriugents, which have tlie effect. Stimulants.—Articles that raise til* excite tile system. Capsicum (Cayenne pepper) is one of the best; ginger, spirits, hartshorn, Ac., tlie essences urc all mure or less stimulating. These are the only classes necessa ry iu treating fevers, though many others are gi-nerallv used, but tle Negative Klectric Fluid is a better •• dia phoretic,” •• anodyne,” “diuretic,” “relaxant” ami “sedative” than known in the materia met lien. 1 shall uot tax tlie reader with a long list of proofs, depending mainly ou tlie results of a trial, and will only refer to one instance of success, t lint on tin* Packetslitp Duchess D'Oi-lenns. which cannot be classed among ordinary certificate. • Vie, the undersigned, certify to the following via— We took passage on the pucketship Duchess d'Orh-ans dipt llutton, then lying in the port of Havre.
