GENERAL ITEMS^ There were nineteen deaths in Montgomery in the mouth ending 28th ult. J Ex-Governor Win. Smith, of Virginia, has been nominated for re-election to Congress. There are now over six huudred miles of railroad in Tennessee, upon which daily trains are running. The Natchez Courier announces the death of Gen. Felix Houston, a few days ago, at Wash ington, Miss., in the o7th year of his age. The Post Office appropriation bill was finally adopted with an amendment providing for a regular mail service, in four horse coaches, between the Mississippi and San Francisco. The steam rice mill, with two acres of land attached, on Pennywath Island, was sold at Savannah on Tuesday for S4IOO. Six negroes sold at the same time brought §SBOO. The ship Fanny McHenry, of Philadelphia arrived at New York on the 10th inst., from London, having made the passage in nineteen days and a half. Among the celebrities at Washington on the 4th of March was a turkey weighing thirty four pounds. It was forwarded from New York to grace the table at the Inauguration Dinner. The total number of deaths in New York for last week was 448, showing a decrease of two deaths, as compared with the report of the previous week. Included among these are 41 deaths by scarlet fever. The sales of swamp or overflowed lands in Louisiana from the Ist of January, 1857, amounted to 850,1145 acres—total sales of Swamp Lunds up to January first, 1857, 995,- 271 acres. It is thought that the Supreme Court of the United States in the Drud Scott ease, will, by a large majority, sustain the extreme Southern ground, denying the constitutionality of the Missouri Compromise. Probably Judges Cur tis and McLean will alone dissent. By the bursting of the boiler of an engine attached to one of the freight trains of the Western & Atlantic liailroad, on Thursday last, a fireman by the name of Wing, was in stantly killed, and the engineer, Mr. McGuire, severely wounded. A woman named Parker, from Cairo, who had been supported by the charity of some kind persons, died suddenly at the Rundall house, St. Louis, on Saturday. After her death, SBO9 in gold and silver were found se creted on her person. The Senate struck out of the Deficiency Bill the House item, appropriating $185,009 for books for members. Probably a more corrupt “job” never was started, even in the house of Representatives,—and the Senate in throwing it out, only did what was honest. A fire broke out on the 28th ult., in the Car ol.na Mills, at Jacksonville, Fla., and in spite of efforts to extinguish it, destroyed nearly the entire building. The mill was built in 1852, and was owned by Kelly & Cos., whose loss is estimated at from $15,000 to $20,000. Mr. Jarvis, of Portsmouth, Va., after a pro tracted series of experiments into the various method of neutralizing the act of teredo on timber submerged in salt water, alleges that in the white zinc he has discovered the great desideratum. It is now said that Henry Ledyard, of Detroit, Michigan, General Cass’ son-in-law, is to be Assistant Secretary of State. Mr. L. was Secretary of the Legation at Paris under Gen eral Cass. He speaks French and Italian thor oughly, having spent eight years in Europe. At Gothenburg in Sweden, the paupers of the parish are every year farmed out to specu lators, who bid for them at auction. The pur chaser is bound to feed and clothe them; he has a right to their labor. It need hardly be said that the parish pays him so much for taking charge of them. The fastest time on record is said to have been made by the Lady Kate, in a trotting match on the ice at Chicago, 111., the other day, she having completed the last mile in 2:20. The official time keepers were gentlemen of experience, and the watches of outsiders agreed in the result, so there can be no doubt about it. A Miss Duncan, accompanied by a friend from Cincinnati, met her divorced husband in Louisville, Ky., on the 20th ult., aud after forcing him to retract alleged slanders relative to her character, cowhided him publicly. The affair created considerable excitement. The heroine made her debut at the National 1 hea ter in Cincinnati, a year or two ago. Bishop Early, the widely known minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, preached in Raleigh, N. C., on Sunday forenoon and night, Ist instant, to a large congregation. Bishop Early is seventy years of age The Standard says he bears his age well, and looks as if there were many years of good # service in him yet. The Treasury department advertises for pro posals and specifications for building a steam revenue cutter of six hundred tons, with dou ble engines and side wheels, to carry ten guns, to be of the fastest sailing qualities, and rigg ed as a sail vessel and to be ot sufficient strength uot only for navigation, but also as a tug vessel in emergencies. Congress has ap propriated §120,000 tor the constiUution. Matteson is the ouly one of the four mem bers of the late Congress, implicated by the report of the Corruption Committee, who will bo in the next Congress. Gilbert aud Edwards were defeated at the last Congressional elec tion in New York by Democrats, aud Welch of Connecticut, has been passed over in the re cent Congressional nomination ot the Republi can party of that State. Tho following are some of the items ot the appropriations made by the last Congress: ror the Const Survey, $420,000; for the continua tion of the Custom House, in Charleston, $400,000; for repairs of Fort Sumter, SIOO,- 000 and for fortifications on the coast of Flor ida,’ $048,000. The sum of $30,000 is appro priated for the survey of the Keys off Florida coast. \ friend of the Temperance cause writing from Augusta to the Crusader says our cause is flourishing even here. We arc making ef forts to get up a petition praying Council to raise licenses from sixty two dollars and fifty cents to one thousand dollars per annum. Par ty may, however, render it abortive at this time, but we are determined to give them a “feeler.” A Washington correspondent of the Herald, writing on the Ist inst., says the rea j p ing in the Senate, recently negotiated by Mr. Spence, our Minister at Constantinople and the Persian Minister at CoUf!^, ! tmo F, 1 1 e ’ simply a commercial treaty. This will[ ac countfor the application made by the State Department for an appropriation tor the ex penses of a Minister to Persia, which passed the Senate after quite an animated discussion. We have never had any intercourse or com mercial relations with that government, and it is anticipated that this will open th e way for extensive business connections. Ihe treaty w an important one in this respect, and it will be taken up after the 4th of March and ratified.
